Kronnang Dunn Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I bet this must have been posted before, but here it goes... Remember the music from this sequence? (Is track 3, VF-Zero) Well... check the music from the Starship Troopers Movie theme at 2:45... What the hell? Quote
frothymug Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Yep. Immediately noticed that the first time I saw Zero, as I've seen Starship Troopers dozens of times. I was also saying "WTF" to that. I also remember one of the tracks at the beginning of Utsuwari no Hime sounding a lot like Independence Day music, but that was more subjective. Quote
Gubaba Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Pirates of the Caribbean music is in Frontier... Quote
Valkyrie Driver Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Pirates of the Caribbean music is in Frontier... Yeah, I noticed that there was some familiar music while I was listening to the frontier OST. Ah, well, can't say I blame them, those are pretty good scores... Quote
Mommar Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 That's worth the watch just for the dogfight. Still one of the best Macross for fighter fights along with Plus. Quote
Mr March Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 (edited) If you love and listen to a lot of music, you may recognize quite a bit of "music mining" in Japanese pop music. I remember a long time ago there was a thread on another anime board (maybe ANN?) that collected a bunch of lifted melodies or borrowed arrangements from songs outside of Japan that found their way into anime scores and soundtracks. It was amazing to hear the two, often compared with YouTube videos. Some may have been just happenstance, but others were wholesale copying, especially given the time frames and styles evoked by the music in their respective era. The list was eclectic, from Journey and Pet Shop Boys to the likes of Blink 182 and the even the soundtrack for Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon! I remember specifically two tracks in the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks were lifted entirely from Lunatic Calm and Pink Floyd Edited July 28, 2015 by Mr March Quote
Mr March Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Kinda like that. But that's very Yoko Kanno-centric. Remembering the thread it was broad, more general in scope for all anime and genres of music. And it wasn't just excessively critical, more like music that ranged from "some shared motifs" to directly "inspired by" to "outright theft" kinda thing. There was a bit of Macross in there (yes, some of Kanno's stuff was mentioned), but it was all over. I've searched but I can't seem to find the thread. But I found this page, which covers some of the same things. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SuspiciouslySimilarSong/Anime Kinda cool. Quote
Kronnang Dunn Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 I don't consider this plagiarism since the segment borrowed from Starship Troopers is just a small cue that really enhances the whole song, but I am kinda disappointed. VF-Zero is my favorite track from the Macross Zero OST and always thought it was all original work... Quote
Andras Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 One of my favorite tracks from the old Bubblegum Crisis anime was lifted from a French song. Mysterious Night https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1kLb-T2UMk Jeanne Mas- Johnny Johnny Quote
Beltane70 Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 On the flip side, I once heard a track from the DYRL soundtrack playing in a segment of Late Night with David Letterman. Quote
sketchley Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 That reminds me (was going to post earlier, but misplaced this topic): The James Bond OHMSS theme (if memory serves) as one of the main actiony themes in Evangelion, and one of the pieces in "2010: The Year We Make Contact" showing up in Gundam 0083! Valkyrie Driver Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 So, Is it just me, or does the song basara is singing in M7 episode 30 sound a lot like "More than a feeling?" by Boston? Quote
DWN013 Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Also, the intro riff from 'Holy lonely light' is totally stolen from megadeth's 'Skin o' my teeth'. Quote
Valkyrie Driver Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Also, the intro riff from 'Holy lonely light' is totally stolen from megadeth's 'Skin o' my teeth'. Mother of God... You're right. Quote
Marzan Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 It has to be said that it is increasingly difficult to make an original melody. There are only so many chords which form a finite amount of progressions—there’s bound to be some overlap. And one can be subconsciously influenced more than one imagines. Of course if a certain artist keeps doing it over and over, well then you can get suspicious. Are guys sure there are no writing credits given to the 'original' composers on some of those pieces you mention? I know that at least Pink Floyd is credited in Cowboy Bebop's Boxed Set for 'On The Run' which plays in episode 20 of Cowboy Bebop. Quote
Valkyrie Driver Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Well, the intro riff from Holy Lonely light is very similar to the riff from Skin o' my teeth, it's just the one part, but almost identical in that one bit. As for the one song sounding like more than a feeling, it does, and I was just commenting, because I've been on a classic rock kick lately, and realized it sounded familiar. Not saying it's so familiar that it's a chord for chord rip off, just felt I had to share. Quote
