thereal9thdoctor Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Huh. Well, now I have yet another reason to love Tamashi stands! Very nifty idea. Thanks! Oh yeah, are you just supergluing the plastic sheet to the paper or do you use another glue for that? I was thinking maybe epoxy myself but would need to rough up the glue side beforehand. Again thanks! Quote

Oh yeah, are you just supergluing the plastic sheet to the paper or do you use another glue for that? I was thinking maybe epoxy myself but would need to rough up the glue side beforehand. Again thanks! Yes... super glue (Cyano Acrylate) bonds extremely well with paper... (into the paper, to be more exact) also bonds well on styrene.... epoxy i imagine would be good in cases where your paper parts are bumpy, and you need to fill out the gaps. hope that helps Quote
thereal9thdoctor Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 Something I thought of after posting that is from past experience epoxy really wets paper, so to speak. It would likely be hard to secure styrene sheets to a completed part cos the paper would buckle. I would almost have to glue the plastic on before folding the parts together if I did that... yeah will probably stick with super glue. Quote
MechTech Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Superglue is the best! I was gluing carbon fiber parts together with epoxy. Clean the joints, mix the epoxy, spread the epoxy and clamp the parts to sit overnight. Then I used superglue and it was STRONGER, faster and better (like the Six Million Dollar Man) - MT Quote

thereal9thdoctor Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Yeah I just finished reading your Deadalus build. I have used epoxy for connections where alot of strength is needed(connecting a scratchbuilt T shaped pylon to the Enterprise secondary hull for my kitbash) because for applications like that its better than super glue because CA has strength in a "vertical" plane (IE pulling apart) whereas epoxy has strength in both "vertical and horizontal" directions. But epoxy is wetter than superglue and will soak the paper where CA won't. The downside to CA is that I will need to use alot.😊 Quote
Nyankodevice Posted October 8, 2015 Author Posted October 8, 2015 made some more on the inside legs... still need to attach some armor plates to add more depth and ofc. Details Quote
thereal9thdoctor Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Considering making balsa wood formers to install in the parts as I fold them together. That and sheet plastic outsides would strengthen this thing considerably. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Your skills are mind blowing!!!!!! Quote
electric indigo Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I just had to check the first page if this had actually started as a papercraft model... Quote
Nyankodevice Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 not really a progress update... just wanted to show what it looks like atm.. still need to make the shoulders, Daedalus and Prometheus Quote
mickyg Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 The term gets overused often, but that thing is truly awesome! It also looks like the ASS-1 at this point. Or what I always expected it looked like. Quote
spanner Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 wow! that's a big sucker! looks mad so far! Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 As it is, amazing! I'll need smelling salts to regain consciousness when I see this SDF-1 with the Shoulders, Prometheus, Daedalus and Painted. Quote
Nyankodevice Posted October 21, 2015 Author Posted October 21, 2015 Made the connectors for the base of the main gun! so that they can turn open... Quote
Nyankodevice Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 (edited) i have come to the point where i have to think about how to connect the parts together... starting with the upper leg parts... the idea i have is supposed to be these giant cables and actuators, possibly hydraulics surrounded by various tubes and cable or something... coming out of this hole and connect to the mid-ship this idea is still not final.... maybe ill have the actuators actually work, for a possible transformation later on... that is still not desided either Edited October 24, 2015 by Nyankodevice Quote
fenrir72 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 @Nyankodevice..........are you sure you're human? Don't be insulted but from post #1 to the present, it's like you are building othe Pyramids of Giza....all by you own! Quote
VF-1A Grunt Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Incredible! When they finally get around to making the live-action Macross movie, they're going to need to rent your model for filming the battle scenes. Can't wait to see it completed! Quote
Nyankodevice Posted January 14, 2016 Author Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) wow i have some progress to show you... as my Queadluun Rau is almost done... ill start this one up again, from a much needed brake... i have started giving it more detail... for now its not gonna transform.... however.... i know my self well enough to know that... i might change my mind later so fickle! therefore i make sure to add the basic mechanism for that now. now i add the regular details, later ill add all the irregular details. NOTE: the photo etch is from 1/3000 DYRL SDF-1 from Yamato Edited January 14, 2016 by Nyankodevice Quote
crazysteve Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Wow this is coming along incredibly. The amount f work you are putting into it is superhuman, I built mine as the no frills, stock version in Attacker mode and it took me 21 days of the most grueling cutting, folding, and pasting work I have ever done in my life. You are taking this to a whole new mind blowing level. When you're done it should be put in a museum! Quote
Nyankodevice Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 finally! i made the large "intakes" on either side of the main (center) hull also had to reshape the main gun base and the side lift thrusters where they meet up with the "Intakes" Quote
Nyankodevice Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 made the "leg" connections or connectors if you will... more pictures of them soon.. once they are more refined.. but im very exited that the main engine housing are attachable without the use of magnets even being able to hold all that weight Quote
Mommar Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 This makes me hate that dippy little SDFM SDF-1 toy we're getting now. Quote

MechTech Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 She's looking better everyday! More plastic than paper it seems. Great all the same! - MT Quote
Nyankodevice Posted January 24, 2016 Author Posted January 24, 2016 wow... been so focused on the main ship that i keep forgetting about the "shoulders" and the smaller crafts... been busying my self with the shoulders today... covered them in styrene and added the cannon mount. Quote
Nyankodevice Posted January 26, 2016 Author Posted January 26, 2016 (edited) didn't think i would have the shoulders done to this extend already... but i was on a roll when it came to the mathematical calculations (Estimated Guesses) so they are... the pictures says it all... need the actuators which i have already made the shape for... the submarine in the background belongs to my friend who comes by often to have company when building his models...
