As for The Last Starfighter. The computer graphics are unwatchably horrible now - and since it has a paper thin plot there is no need to watch it for that either. This *IS* one movie that screams out for a remake though.

Disagree. I was watching it on TV here the other night and apart from the close up rendering of the asteroids surfaces, the mountain that the Rylos base is mounted on an pretty much any other landscape, the animation still holds up pretty well.

In fact, my biggest problem with the movie was THIS extra and his facial expressions who should have been much further back in shot.......

The special effects are irrelevant to me; it's the fantasy of the story I find compelling. How many of us here have fantasized about being picked out of our mundane lives and chosen to wage an interstellar battle for the cause of good behind the stick of a Valkyrie, Gundam or whatever? For the countless daydreaming and epic space battles and satisfying love stories that The Last Starfighter inspired me to create in my dreams, I'll forever be a fan...

Also, the Gunstar still looks awesome, and we need some merch so I can park one on my shelf.

The Gunstar is an awesome ship. The death blossom "petals" opening looked cool as well. The Ko-Dan ships also had a nice unique design. I had the comic before I saw the film and I couldn't believe that it was an actual movie, it was that cool.....

Yeah, but Disney is shiiting itself because Tomorrowland has "underperformed". You know what it's like, all films are expected to be billion dollar making blockbusters today, there is little room for films considered to be more moderate successes and certainly no room for SF films that fit that bill. I can imagine that Tron 3 probably had a very high budget estimate that got the studio nervous. And since this is true "Disney" property I don't think we will see it get taken to another studio, of course.

A great pity.

The budget for Tron: Legacy was $170 million and made ~$400 million. Tomorrowland's budget was $180 million. So I imagine they were looking around the same for this Tron sequel.

It's Disney, they will send money for Marvel and Star Wars franchises because they make money for her.

Tron 3 or another thing don't have no guarantee of financial return.

No need to limit that to "Disney", any studio that does not try to maximize profit will not be a studio for very long. Star Wars and Marvel they are eventually going to end up with a monumental flop and those movies will come to a crashing halt as well.

One underperforming movie doesn't stop multi-billion dollar franchises.

Since Billion Dollar franchises have not been around a while there are no examples to show the opposite. But we will not be seeing

Star Trek The Next Generation films.

Many Westerns.

Many War movies.

Super Heroes are going to suffer the same fate at some point.

Bond has been around for 53 years. Star Wars for 38 years.

How does one do a war movie franchise? How many times can someone save Private Ryan or kill Colonel Kurtz?

Oh, and Trek is niche.

OK, I can agree to disagree.

either way poor move on Disney's part.

TRON 2 or Tomorrowland? TRON 2 was a good film, not great, but good. Not seen Tomorrowland so can't comment.

no i mean poor move on disney for canceling Tron 3 over a crap boring fest like Tomorrowland staring a man who has outlived his 90's powerhouse ego. We all know George Clooney is egotistical and needs to keep up appearances, he's kind of just there to remind us he's still "important" and thanks to that we lost out on something fun.

LOL, what? Clooney is by far the most talented person involved in that production.

Sorry, I kept seeing "movie" when you wrote "move"...

Agreed, what Tomorrowland has to do with Tron 3 is head scratching at best.

There are other things that are annoying about this as well. Bruce Boxleitner is now 65 which probably means that this was his last chance to play Tron and if they leave it too long I guess they will be looking for a total "reboot" of the franchise if they do another film, which will suck.

But yeah, at the end of the day, Disney has all of these other franchises going gangbusters for them now so why bother with anything that could be perceived as a financial risk.

I wonder how far along planning was for Tron 3 though. I suppose we'll find out someday.

So what if he's 65? That sure wasn't him doing all those moves when tron was rinzler. All he would need to do just like the animated series is provide tron a voice and bam he's done. They'll just digitize a younger face just like tron 2 with him and bridges.

Disney just can't pump out much of anything good anymore. Granted they take leaps in making new things while studios are all about reviving old properties but either case Disney just wants to pump it out and not care about the magic or the production styling just like the other studios.

I dunno if Walt would spin in his cryotube or what!

I see this news as a good thing. The people that like Tron Legacy all talk about the soundtrack, Olivia Wilde, and the look of The Grid. Or they didn't grow up with the original Tron or like it that much to begin with. Tron Legacy is the worst kind of product movie and if they never get around to a sequel, which it looks like they won't, then I'm glad it failed. If you get a chance to make a movie it should be the best movie you can make. It shouldn't be a movie filled with stuff for sequels and compromises for a target audience. A movie that cares so little for the title character that they leave him falling to the bottom of a lake after a bad twist.

I wonder how far along planning was for Tron 3 though. I suppose we'll find out someday.

I'm sure they had multiple scripts. There was talk about different writers. I imagine they had tons of different "pitches" and story ideas. Olivia Wilde seemed to read or hear storylines. Quorra in the real world focus sounds so wrong. No one really wants to see that. Certainly not in a movie that started off being about videogames and going inside computer worlds.

I really hope it's not dead. Legacy left off in a way that had me saying, what, that's it? I need more. WTF happened to Tron? Would be nice to see more Tron

Legacy left me thinking how spectacular it must have been to get to teach Quorra about human sexuality...
