Loop Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Just arrived. I knew it was going to be small, but it is smaller than I expected. Not sure why it is called Hi-Metal. It is over 90% plastic. The feet, shoulders, and leg swing bar are metal. I think they call them Hi-Metal because you have to be high to think they have a lot of metal lol. Quote
ArchieNov Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Does the chest armor lock into place? Or is it loosely connected like Renato said? Quote
jvmacross Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 The Hi-Metal name is just a nostalgic nod to the days of old when hi-metal actually meant a good amount of metal in Takatoku/Bandai toys.... Quote
TheLoneWolf Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 In addition to what jvmacross wrote, note the similar box styles between the vintage Hi-Metal toys and today's Hi-Metal R line. For example, they both feature painted artwork and clear cellophane that partially reveals the toy. I doubt it's a coincidence. Quote
OzmaLee74 Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Does the chest armor lock into place? Or is it loosely connected like Renato said? Mine seems to have locked in place. Didn't bother to check how though or why it's pretty tight. I can check again later. Quote

Could be also the reason why the newer "R" variant comes in grey now instead... Edited September 23, 2015 by treatment Quote

mechaninac Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Love the Valk toss picture; but a 1/48 tossing a 1/100 would be even better... Quote

F360 Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 in that pic the hi metal just went from small to tiny . I wonder how many hi metal can fit on 1 yeti stand ..... 9? Quote
jenius Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 If you use the stands with the peg slots you could put a Hi-Metal VF-1 on each slot for 6 total with ease... it might make for some pretty cool squadron flying at some point. Quote
ChaoticYeti Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Probably 20+. That was the reason I picked this one up. Not really feeling it. Once I have my measurements I will probably put it up on fs. Quote
Old Man Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Would it be safe to assume that the VF-1S Hikaru Hi-Metal R will be done in the same grayish-white? I was hoping I could display the new Hi-Metal R Valks with my Hi-Metal Skull Squadron VF-1s...Renato's picture reveals just how different the two are Quote

Chronocidal Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Given the tendency of Bandai plastic to yellow, I've got no issue with making this one in gray. I prefer all the DYRL releases of the Yamato VF-1 for the same reason. Quote
dapro Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Are there any video reviews on this guy yet? Quote

treatment Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 This is the first I've heard of Bandai products having a tendency to yellow more than Yamato products. Which toys have been affected by this? There were several threads here in MWF back in the days about the yellowing of Bandai valks. Mostly the 1/55 Hikaru (1A, Super-1S, Strike-1S ) and the G1 Jetfire. Iirc, the 1/100 Bandai Hi-Metal line were also reported as affected. Something about the white plastic that Bandai used on the Hi-Metal line that triggers yellowing even when stored out of sunlight and never taken out of the box. Quote
jenius Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Ohhh, yeah, the chunky monkeys definitely yellowed. I'll have my Hi-Metal out for comparisons when my HMR gets here. Curious to see if it yellowed. Someone also mentioned cracking GERWALK joints so I'll look into that. Quote

no3Ljm Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 (edited) Are there any video reviews on this guy yet? Actually, there is already. If you only browsed the thread a few pages ago, you will see Joppewo's post that includes Dengeki Hobby video featuring Matt. Dengeki Hobby page on the VF-1J Armor: http://hobby.dengeki.com/news/101183/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=160&v=_VYiUUbOfbg Here's another one from レオンチャンネル (Leon Channel) over YouTube. One of his haul was the Hi-Metal R VF-1J GBP from 2:02 to 3:44. He also mentioned that it's more grey than white. Edited September 24, 2015 by no3ljm Quote
