Chronocidal Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Not sure the art does - and to be honest, I only ever thought the 1S did the angle/turret thing you mention. I measured my 1J; the distance between the lasers facing forward and facing up - there is a difference of a few mm, I never noticed it before on the 1J, I only noticed it wasn't as splayed as the anime. I'd say there is maybe a 1 to 2 degree (or less) angle at the base to allow this - it is possible to do this on my version - but i'll see how this printed one goes first. But that may have been a better way to go initially. Oh well, I'm only human. Fortunately, that's a pretty simple change to make to the overall design, so shouldn't be too difficult to implement if you want to try it. You might need a decent angle on the pivot surface to get the splay angle you want though. Quote
Mommar Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I think it'd work on a TV Max 1A. Now to track one of those down... To be perfectly honest I don't believe that head would work on the 1A at all. I tried out the old 1J on my 1A and... it's off. Quote
Kurisama Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 Well A) No one has tried this head sculpt yet and B) Was your 1J head blue? Quote
Xigfrid Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I really like your design in MAX color. Quote
Mommar Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Well A) No one has tried this head sculpt yet and B) Was your 1J head blue? Given that the 1J head off of Max's 1J is a blue 1J head, yes. As the original heads go the 1J doesn't work on the 1A body, I'm assuming that would be true of a Macross The First version of the 1J as well. Quote
CoreyD Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Mommar, can you clarify what you mean by the VF1J head doesn't work on a 1A body? I've put the 1/60 VF1J mass production head on Kakizaki's valk to see what it'd look like if he got promoted, so I'm not sure what you mean? Quote
chyll2 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 the assembly kit also shows that you can put 1S, 1A and 1J on the same body. Quote
jvmacross Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 (edited) I think what Mommar is trying to say is that the color scheme of the VF-1A TV Max does not work well with an almost entirely blue VF-1J head.....to make it work (aesthetically) the "blue" MtF head would need to be placed onto a VF-1J Max.... Similarly, I think the MtF head as designed by Tenjin and brought to life in 3D by Kurisama...would look good with a blue stripe on the head and blue scheme (where red exists now) for the rest of the battroid....maybe someone with Adobe photoshop skills can do that with this pic.... CoreyD Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Ah hah he meant aesthetically, not mechanically! Quote
Valkyrie addict Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Great work as always Kurisama. A max VF-1J MtF scheme would definitely look real good. The VF-1A/J/S heads are all interchangeable on the Yammie VF-1, but I don't know if the gills would allow the head to sit flushed in fighter mode. Quote
Kurisama Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 Just got notice that this has shipped (along with a few other items) and should be here in a few weeks :3 Valkyrie Addict - I am usually so pedantic about tolerances and fit and all that jazz.... I am embarrassed to say I didn't even check to see if this would fit flushed... whoops. Quote
Kurisama Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 This arrived today - couldn't resist a test fit!!! Even with the WSF lasers - still feel a little fragile... Will prep the pieces tonight and get the ball rolling on the whole thing. Quote
Xigfrid Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I feel that the white paint will not pop out the details enough, This head deserves the "Max" color scheme from your avatar! Quote
jvmacross Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Looks great! Can't wait to see it painted up. Will definitely get one once you give it your final blessing! Quote
spanner Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 this does look great! Might have to get me one and do a upgrade to my of my VF-1A Valks.. Quote
Reïvaj Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Wow, it looks great indeed! Amazing job, Kurisama! Quote
Kurisama Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 Thanks! I'm overseas atm, and the week before I left to go overseas, the weather wasn't right for painting outside - so thats the reason for the delay! Will get back onto it in approx 3 weeks. Quote
Viiof Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I'm interested in picking up the kit, but was curious if it mattered at all what material it's made in. Quote
Kurisama Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 Yes it does matter. Purchase in UD or FUD for the crispness and smoothness of details, less work in prep for painting. There is aa link down the bottom of that order page that allows you to buy the head lasers in a different material that is far stronger for the thin parts, but rougher on the surface. Quote

Very nice fine detail and impressive finish! All I need to do now is decide which color im gonna paint it.. still not sure which Valkyrie I wanna fit it too.. I was thinking of waiting till the VF-1J GBP sets arrive seeing I bought two of them and was going to keep one of the VF-1J bare that I could paint it up white and red! What you reckon? And one again thanks again for making this available Kurisama! You're a legend! Quote
DrEmilLang Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Does shapeways have anything that's approximately as strong as the original ABS? Quote
Jasonc Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I had the angle ones snap on me. Dammit!!! I really like those ones. I know they're brittle in the F.U.D., but how much to do those in metal? Would they end up costing too much? How much stronger are the WSF versions? Quote
chyll2 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 any primed shots of it? and does it fit in fighter mode? Quote

If only they could switch their FUD material with a much stronger resin that would be delightful, I have given up so many design because of that... Brass could be a solution if the antennas are not less than 1mm diameter, but much more expensive unfortunately. Edited January 26, 2015 by Xigfrid Quote
Viiof Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 What is everyone doing to make the head fit on the neck post? I had one neck snap on me Quote
spanner Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 with the Kurisama head unit and the VF-1 assembly kit I will be picking up shortly, I have decided that I will be building it up to exactly this! looks so damn cool! Quote
Kurisama Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 Hey guys - so sorry to hear about the breakages I'll finally be home from overseas tomorrow and I can look into it then - at a quick glance in the material section - metal prints would cost approximately $15. I can make it available if ya'll like? I'll post the different metal options and would like to hear what would work for you. Quote
Kurisama Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 Ok, here is what is available; What would best suit? Prices are from $15 - $18. Quote
Jasonc Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Maybe that matte black steel??? The white can easily cover what it needs. Quote
Kurisama Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 Bah - why was I not alerted to this reply!! Apologies Jasonc - black steel work for you? Just give the go ahead and I will make it so. Quote
Jasonc Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Yeah, that works. Sorry, spending my days working 10 hrs/day and between that and sleep, trying to pack for moving. Yeah, black steel is fine. I'll order it as soon as it's up. Quote
Jasonc Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 It is done. Thanks. I should get it by March 4th, according to Shapeways. I'll post up pics when it comes in. Quote
