Indeed, the only shows that break the cour format are long running daytime or primetime shows, not much mecha in that slot unless it's a Bandai or Takara Tomy toy property.

The tone of the new series will be related to the format and broadcasting time. Daytime (weekend morning) or early evening -> young kids and tweens (Macross 7, Gundam Age, Gundam Seed). Late night slot -> otaku audience aka teens and twenty somethings (Macross Frontier, Gundam 00).

Stuff like Unicorn, Macross Plus or Zero etc is pretty much reserved for OVA. Yamato 2199 did make it to TV, but that is a bit of an exception.

So the poison is either simple content or loads of otaku tropes ^_^.

Agreed.

The more mature, substantive themes have always been reserved for OVA, Movies or Manga. Formats where the titles are "chosen" by the viewer rather than "offered" for general public consumption like TV.

Our Japanese residents can speak more to this, but I do not believe cable TV or even streaming TV is as prevalent in Japan as it is in North America. These services here are offering less mainstream, sanitized entertainment compared to what is offered on Network TV. This is possible because they are subscriber funded and not advertising funded. Hence the choose vs offered notion.

TV is very much like tent pole Hollywood movies, bigger budgets, but much more generic or trend chasing for mass appeal.

Sorry to honk anyone off but this thread is getting pretty long and I;m looking for an update: do we have any official statement as to how the title is to be translated? I know Delta seems to be preferred at this point but there was conjecture that it could be triangle or triangular at one point. Personally, I'm curious to see if that word could lead us to some clues as to the content. The 3 legs of Macross stories? The love triangle in each story? Delta= change? Could there be a 'change' in the Macross philosophy? Will the time travel element of the last video game 'change' how Macross stories or continuity works? Sorry if I'm just repeating what others say- any feedback or info appreciated.

At this point no, there has been no official ruling on how the title is read. The only comments have been something akin to 'wait and see (*winkwink*)'

Which is all we can really do for now. The series is still a fair ways off. Give it time and savour the anticipation imo (^_^)

This thread... :p

It has happened before and it will happen again:

http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=21926

For me, the promotional material is interesting. However, because it is an advertisement for singing talent, it really doesn't mean anything unless I'm trying to overthink this stuff. A Macross series that focuses more on the idols would be an interesting twist, and may turn out to be fantastic, albeit it would be very similar to AKB0048, K-ON!, and other anime with a specific idol focus.

Personally, I like how Macross has gone somewhere different with each of its iterations. Even those movies that retold stories did so by changing the audience's perspective slightly and giving a different take on the events. I'm looking forward to how this new show develops and seeing how it adds to the entire mythology that is Macross.

This thread <---------Whyyyyyyyyy? :D

The SDF-01 is an evil ship and the demonic technology was never meant to be in mankind's hands. Too much power attracts powerful people seeking it.

1999 was when it crashed on earth.

1999 upside down gives you three sixes. (its supposed to be apocalyptic end of the world stuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_August_11,_1999

What happened when we didn't give the toy to the giants? They laser bombarded earth.

Imagine if you were a superhero and the super villain held your family hostage once they knoew your secret identity?

Same thing. The power of the tech makes militant races want to steal it. And they will do anything to get it even if it means killing off everyone that gets in their way.

Revelation 9 verse 11 talks about the destroyer/apollyon. September 11 was when human made peace with the rebel faction of the aliens to fight the alien boss in DYRL. What was it that destroyed Bodolza? The SDF-01/the Destroyer. It's power was needed by the zentradi to control others and was succesfully used against them to destroy them, saving the few lives of the crew.

But If the tech had never crashed onto earth, humans would be living in peace and the only fighting is small fights amongst humans. The guy who said macross is evil wasn't far off. I occult numerology the number 11 is considered an evil number. So events are planned on the date because what goes on in the heavens reflects what happens on earth and what happens on earth will change what happens in the heavens. "as above so below" as magicians mystics etc say.So they used certain dates as magically significant times to do spells as the gates are open to the other world etc etc

As I said before if you analyse a lot of the science fiction movies you can see symbolism and pagan stuff hidden in plain sight. Usually giving honor to the sun god Osirus/Nimrod. I told you people wouldn't understand it.. But it means stuff to the artists who put it in the entertainment. Occult numerology is in this stuff but you need to look for it to see it to decode the meaning. (usually one is hidden while the other is obvious)

Want peace? You got to learn to use tech responsibly or you'll get people killing each other with it or killing each other to obtain it. This is why peace through force can not solve the world's problems. I guess that was the point of the Atlanteans and Protoculture. All that sicnece and tech but no wisdom. And if the SDF-01 falls into human hands that means we have inherited the curse as others (all the other aliens) who don't have that power will inevitably see it as oppression when the humans don't get what they want and then they use the tech to enslave and boss them around through force. Remember that one shot from the main gun can kill great numbers of alien ships. Despite being a warlike culture, I don't blame the aliens for going apeshit and wanting to have it. Remember the protoculture were the race that actually enslaved them and brainwashed them, so that makes humans far deadlier than usual. Macross = Apollyon/The destroyer. :p

Without all the tech would people have as easy a time to dominate other people and oppress? Nope because it would be risky and that risk is taken away when weapons start getting too powerful and easy to obtain.

Who are the losers in wars? It's you and your kids because you get caught up in the fighting and forced to take part even if you don't believe in the reasons for the fighting and killing. Putting faith in the god of forces is what causes so much death. There will probably be a lot more symbolism in future shows but you got to pay attention and analyse it. Is technology good? Is technology bad? That's not the point. If you are human you are imperfect. So that's why people keep misusing it. All these shows have a spiritual message for you and yes it's just entertainment. But within the stories are characters who are representative of certain types of people in real world that exist today.

I just prefer that all the shows focus on consequences for bad actions and the danger element that we got from previous macross shows which made audience think. The new shows have characters which really we don't care about because it's unbalanced and it has gotten away from drama. DYRL and SDFM had the magic ingredients. Frontier had cool animated battle sequence. Mac 7 probably the best music imo. But what I'd like is something closer to SDFM but with gundam unicorn type realism of characters. (grounded in reality)

Something that makes us think "what is the purpose of trying to control others with the technology and assume that "we aren't the dangerous ones?" Why is it that "everyone else is evil and wants to kill us and we are morally superior to the aliens so we got to bring peace to them because they can't have peace themselves because only we are the good guys who can bring peace to them" (peace using force that is lol) Something that forces people to reflect and look at themselves in the mirror a bit you know? You can have your pop idols and cool mecha porn, and still put in a spiritual message about what peace really is. It's not using weapon to kill people so that you can take their stuff and ensure peace for your own race/species/nation. What real peace is: not letting evil within yourself take over so that you don't harm other people and tread on their rights to exist and by doing this you can avoid the need to kill stuff because you let go of the materialistic need to covet stuff that's not yours all the time.

Many of these shows glorify killing too much and lack critical thinking about our world that we live in today. There has not been a time in human history that we have not been at war against something. It's time macross grows up I guess. Humans are not the good guys. we are far from it. We are a mixture of bad and good and struggle with evil. You could paint the external threat as evil and say "that is the bad guy". But really they are just like us. UC Gundam does this succesfully and the effect of it is you care a bit when a bad guy dies. If we are descended from the protoculture than we are guilty of using science and also abusing it for selfish purposes in competition with other races who are similar. I think that makes for better story than one where we are the only peaceful race that exists and everyone is evil while we have pure intentions. It's just not realistic.

A good movie is "The Thing". (John Carpenter)

http://weirdfictionreview.com/2012/03/underneath-the-skin-john-carpenters-the-thing-and-you/

What exactly is the "thing". It's US! Man is the scariest horror monster we we fight against ourself. There is meaning there. And it's not coincidence that the alien is portrayed as a being that looks like us and kills us. We are the Thing. The Thing is us. We kill each other all the time! That's the deep message of the movie. Is it a piece of entertainment too? Yeah. But it's saying something about society and ourselves and forces you to think. We like to create monsters but what if we have horror movie that isn't a ugly thing but which can look just like ourselves and then you can't tell the difference if the monster is there with you in the room or if it is indeed dead and you can relax? You are forced to decide that labelling something evil by its appearance is silly and you realise that we need to analyse our own behavior and actions and the consequences our own actions have on the world around us because we are ten times worse than the ugly monster if we don't deal with "the thing". (ie our own problems of evil inside us)

Well this thread escalated quickly. Those walls of text were..impressive.

2 points I want to make that won’t take up 10 paragraphs.

  1. Pretty much 90% of anime TV series subscribe now to the 1cour (12-13 episodes) or 2 cour (24/25-26 episodes) run. This allows networks to program their schedule much more efficiently. So I don’t think we’ll see a number of episodes that doesn’t fit this model.
  2. Gubaba is spot on when he says that people should look at the reasons for Frontier’s success. It’s the idols that made the difference. And viewer preferences have not changed since then,. Just google the sales figures for a show like “Love Live”. It’s massive. Yeah something like Gundam Unicorn sold a bucketload too, but that was more the exception to the rule. The Mecha genre is simply not selling the way it once did.

I absolutely love Macross Plus. Love it. But I think that people that are expecting something like it, with adult main characters and a more ‘gritty’ tone are setting themselves up for future disappointment.

Sales = quality. Gotcha. :p

I happen to agree with what you are saying about sales being based on idols and that's what made it popular. But there is an assumption that you can't have Idols and young people as well as the older people. As the young character ages a bit he mature and becomes better pilot, and the audience sees changes and cares about what happens to them. (ie whether they die, get dumped, lose battles, meet new people and have split loyalty, etc. You watch soaps right? You relate to the characters because of the characters being realistic or based on realism. That's what I think is better. You can still make money this way. It's just that people are used to seeing characters that serve no purpose. Once you give the masses quality they will get used to it. They won't just watch it for one or two things but for several reasons.

When I watch macross 7 I should have to like it only because I like rock music. I should expect quality animation, mecha duels, and stories that have some message and not just super robot show 30 min monster of the week action. Sorry but if you like Macross Plus you should not be caring so much what a business thinks all the time. I much prefer stuff like armored trooper votoms, SDFM, UC Gundam which can appeal to more than one age than stuff aimed at kids only. I want to see something where if it is good enough I will buy dvd/blu ray. I didn't like too much focus on one thing. Balance is important.

Look at the videogame industry as an example. It used to be just for action movie types who like to see stereotypical heroes and the games have stories that really only serve the purpose of giving you an excuse to fight evil bad guys and usually involves a girldfriend getting kidapped and the hero goes to rescue the girl. Then it grew up and matured a bit and had deep characters in the games and the story became a attractive reason to want to play a game. (not just action or the gameplay or deep mechanics) Now we have games where they are a big part of pop culture and mainstream and sell to many different people and appeal to wide audience of people due to having developed characters you care about, high quality visuals, and the sheer volume of the game has increased. (dozens of hours can be spent in GTA 5 roaming the city because of how massive it is. Much like the fan fiction for comic books, games have massive communities that make mods and lore for the universes of these games)

Stories and characters in games like Fallout New Vegas, Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us are good enough to give you a reason to play them now. You can play a game like Metal Gear Solid and enjoy the game for its story despite not caring for the action. It's the same thing for tv series: aim mature and kids who are mature will want to see it if it is quality. But you don't have to remove the stuff that made the immature people like previous stuff. (an action game with juvenile humor can still have this by putting in juvenile people in it) Don't you get sick of the same thing over and over again? Even 12 year old girls grow up you know...

if you guys wanna actually support some hardcore gritty japanese cartoons maybe you should watch Argevollen where all the characters (even the cute girls) are competent military people and all the robots are big and stompy. Also when the main character and rival meet in combat they don't have philosophical debates like *COUGH GUNDAM COUGH* but just fight with blind viking rage.

I doubt Kawamori will do anything outside what Kawamori want's to do.
I'm pretty sure he could make Skull Squadron led by nothing but 13' year old idol girls, fighting the evil

Creepy old zentran hackers fleet, trying to steal photos from their clouds... and it would probably get approved.

Wat? I'm saying it's pointless to look at current Anime's to judge what Kawamori will do. I am saying that he has

proven himself to be a powerful writer in the field, which means he will do what he wants, even if it's outside of what

might be "more popular". The Studio's will go with what he wants, even if elements extend beyond "popular" things.

I said it in nothing but respect.

Ah, sorry... I misunderstood, then. I apologize.

(I *DO* see it a lot, though... "Kawamori is a troll" is basically received wisdom at this point, regardless of fact.)

I think that's just the dissatisfaction with open-ended story lines. I can see how people would say he is "trolling" by leaving it open.

At the same time, it's just any good story, where the ultimate closure lies with the reader or viewer in this case. I for one think the end of the Frontier

series is brilliant. It's not so much a love triangle, but the completing of the main characters soul, by the two love interests being the wings to him.

enter another triangle shape. The ending which people complained about, because Alto didn't chose either girl. It was never about the girls, from the very first episode it was always about the sky, and taking flight. It was beautiful in it's execution. If it had been written by Christopher Nolan, it would have been "omg the greatest ever". Since it was animation, and therefor perceived to be of a less standard than film, I think it suffers in being a little bit to well done. People don't like anything but happy endings, and Frontier didn't end happy enough for some people, for a few it seems, it was complete closure.

Now I say that as a bigger fan of Film, then Anime, there are very few Anime shows I like, because I appreciate the Artuer, which Kawamori definitely is.

I think that some of what Kawamori does in his story writing, might actually be too much to understand for a casual animation viewer. Zero is another show that I think suffers from being to smart, too deep.. maybe even to early. Maybe i'm too deep, but I feel like most dislike towards these shows are from a misunderstanding of the core focus on the characters, and not the story, or the "continuity".

Posted

That's exactly how I saw both skullmilitia, couldn't have said it better myself. Then again I do like deep shows as well. And no I don't count gundam as deep... I count it as spewing BS trying to pretend to be intelligent. Kawamori doesn't go out of the way to explain it, he lets the viewer apply their own interpretation and each person see a different part of the depth that matters most to them.

Posted

I realize that we're all in, "we don't know anything, this is just wishes and speculation" mode, and I think that's fun. But it occurs to me (and maybe I'm that last to notice) that we actually do know one thing: they are looking for a new idol talent.

Therefore, I think we can safely assume that:

1) Hoping that the new show won't prominently feature idol(s) is probably pointless; and

2) Guessing that the new show will feature an entire idol group - which I've suggested myself - is probably incorrect.

Yes, Frontier did a big search for a new idol voice and then actually featured two idols by also tapping an existing talent. But I don't really expect we'll see to see an amateur supplemented by an entire group of pros.

Will do. If you have a fave list of mecha shows coul you pm me that list? I haven't been keeping up with anime for ages.

...and oh yeah there is occult numerology everywhere and those aliens in the ancient aliens history channel imo are demons or fallen angels whho secretly reveal the technology of the past to select occult groups in history that will shape the world according to how satan wants..

I'm convinced the book of revelations is talking about supernatural beings who have powers to make us believe they are just beings from other planets so they can explai away the christian rapture to the public as alien abduction and that the remaining people are special and are the chosen people to evolve humanity by accepting the mark of the "beast". (beasts are usually empires represented by an animal local to the regions - eg Bear is symbol of russia, phoenix/eagle is US, lion/dragon is UK)

In occult numerology number 11 is evil. In bible prophecy there will be ten kingdoms (the people trying to create a new world order will split the world into ten economic regions/bloc) and then later there will emerge an 11th kingdom (11th horn) which will be the antichrist or the system of the antichrist. (the being could be fallen angel unleashed by God to deceive the masses and pose as a hero who saves us all from a global crisis but actually is a fake who created the chaos behind the scenes just so he could get you to join the antichrist system in a time of vulnerability and gain authority over you and prove he can be a god and substitute for Jesus)

In prophetic language this antichrist system is referred to as the beast with 7 heads, 10 horns.

There are 7 continents (the 7 heads)

http://www.whatarethe7continents.com/?PageSpeed=noscript

there are going to be 10 regions: (10 horns/kings from Rev. 17:12)

^

at about 17mins 40s and at 23 minutes into the video you see the 10 regions numbered. This could change but I think this is the 10 horns. In prophetic language a horn is a king and the heads must be the kingdoms. The modern kings are the prime ministers or presidents of each nation. Incidentally I think the 7 mountains just refer to fortresses for the bad guys to hide when the crap hits the fan. The prophecy mentions "surrounded by 7 mountains", which imo could be secret underground military bases that they've paid for by the tax payers who they enslaved)

Now here is where the occult numerology pops up and number 11 is special. The 11th horn/King is the beast/antichrist. This is why 911 was important to the occultist. It's in honor of Apollyon the Destroyer mention in Revelation 9 verse 11. The leader they worship and who will be freed from the Abyss/Bottomless pit when the time of judgement has come. To get him out of the damn pit, they first got to fulfill the prophecy because God is not a liar and this is the only way to free him. And if they want to meet him, they got to fulfill steps to get the right conditions for his removal, right?

He is the leader of the rebellion against God and will try to fight what is coming. (God has to judge all the evil deeds of the bad guys at the end of the age and the bad guys will try to fight but lose so they will target God's saints to get revenge)

A lot of science fiction being made today is usually celebration of "man's mastery over nature through his knowledge of science" and the god of the science is often depicted as Nimrod/Prometheus who gave mankind fire from heaven or to put it in other words it's the kowledge of the fallen angels which advanced man's civilisation more quickly. This could be interpreted to mean knowledge was stolen. Prometheus = the first liberal. Like Robin Hood he ""Steal from rich to give to the poor" without even asking if the person who is being robbed if it is ok with them to have the loot stolen and handed out freely. The freemasons view lucifer as a hero and Jesus Christ as the real bad guy because the Father in heaven was harsh in punishing man by kicking out of the garden of eden.

Macross being a science fiction show is going to have symbols everywhere. Hopefully this delta symbol means they put in some gritty special forces characters and not a wussy kid who whines about stuff. I watched the chuck norris movies and think it is time for some older characters for once instead of pathetic characters which really are put there to make fun of the otaku who are unsure of themselves and shy and depressed because their parents are crappy and beat them as little kids. Yes it may be made in japan, I get that. But even in SDF Macross you had guys like Roy who were popular characters. Why can't they give us a Dyson or Roy type personality as a heroic pilot for once instead of depressed kids who fail?

You guys watch transformers G1 right? You hated it when optimus prime (the confident leader who could make decisions and didn't second guess himself all the time) died and in his place we got rodimus prime who was reckless and dumb (who always second guesses himself) and it made people angry because people can't relate to that and it is a form of pandering. (making a character that is their own age in hopes of getting the emo kids, even though most people watch sci fi to escape from that) That's what I think of when I watch animes where the authors of the work are deliberately putting in pathetic main characters to make fun of their own audience. It's tiring. Some older people who have grown a bit of pubic hair would be nice once in a while is all I'm saying please. I will watch it and buy the dvds if it is grounded in some reality.

I've rewatched SDFM about 3 times but only rewatched Macross 7 about 1 time. You want a show that is good and can be enjoyed a long time not something that just cashes in on a fad.

I like mechas, transforming planes that kill stuff, and the good music. But I fear they will give us another macross 7 again. And characters will be so popular they are invincible and will never die just like Basara because audiences want their fave character to be unkillable like in those kiddy gundam Wing shows. lol

Macross Delta needs to be a post apoc scifi story about stranded destroid pilots who sing gritty war songs to boost the morale of female giant zentradi who fell in love with the humans and which they have kept as pets and sworn to defend against evil male zentradi pilots who have jammed the signals to force the NUNS to use destroids to search for the human survivors instead of flying in valkyries and this begins the introduction of transforming destroids that look like the chunky missile spamming robot seen in Genesis Climber Mospeada but which has been adapted for close combat encounters in dark caves where large numbers has only limited advantages for the clumsy giants who have bulky machines and poor vision.

Kawamori will be forced by the sponsors to do a trendy mecha TV series, but he always manages to inject some relevant substantial idea or ideas into the context of the story. M7 had revelations about the PC and the origins of the PD. MF gave us the idea of more independent emigration fleets, along with the decentralized final development of Valks. There was the introduction that not all emigration fleets were publicly funded and that multi-national corporations are still self serving forces of influence in all levels of government. These themes are not at all juvenile.

I would expect the same in this one.

Delta will be about some up and coming officer who decides the "Jamming Birds" were a great idea and he is in charge of making them pilot as well as sing.

There will be one seasoned Valk pilot (who will somehow still be a teen) who will be assigned their pilot training.

It will end up being a harem with two girls way out front thus keeping the "triangle"
