Gubaba Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 There might be a repeat character a la Max and Miria in Macross 7? My money is on Luca, all grown up, finally wearing trousers instead of shorts. If that means Nanase appears, too, then I'm all for it.
Mechapilot77 Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 whatever it is, i can't wait. i'll just so i hope its stylistically different enough from frontier where it doesn't feel like we're watching the same thing. for instance i don't think the yf-30 is different enough from the other frontier era valks to be different enough to be the hero valk in the new series. that is just using valks as a talking point but i feel the same way for the art style, story telling etc. for example frontier felt way different than zero, as did zero from m7 etc. i hope the fact that bandai is involved yet again, doesn't mean we get essentially macross frontier style with a new story/chjaracters etc.
jvmacross Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Would be nice to have Mikimoto as the lead character designer again for a new Macross TV series, but it seems that Satelight is now the go-to Macross animationn house....so probably the "look" will be very similar to Macross F....but we'll have to wait and see I guess... I think we can expect the VF-30 to be the main variable fighter for NUNS...with SMS being in possession of the latest VF models..... How many years is this new show based after the events of Macross30?
azrael Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Would be nice to have Mikimoto as the lead character designer again for a new Macross TV series, That depends on Mikimoto's schedule. but it seems that Satelight is now the go-to Macross animationn house.... Considering Kawamori is Sr. Managing Director at Satelight, that should answer your thought. I think we can expect the VF-30 to be the main variable fighter for NUNS...with SMS being in possession of the latest VF models..... That depends on Kawamori. Does he want to design something new or does he want to use the VF-24/VF-25/VF-27/YF-29/YF-30 family... AGAIN? How many years is this new show based after the events of Macross30? Looks like it is taking place in 2067. But that could change.

Actually, not sure if this is true or not, but I thought I saw it posted that Mikimoto no longer wanted to get involved with any TV/film productions? Yep, why fill someone else's pockets with cash! Well, just based on every TV show so far...there is always a brand new hero valk....I am sure Bandai is insisting on it....see above regarding pockets full of cash! So it is 8 years after the events of Macross 30?....I thought it was 8 years after Macross Frontier?

Probably won't happen, but if Mikimoto did do the designs for this new series I'd be insanely happy, he is hands down one of the best character designers ever!
azrael Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Actually, not sure if this is true or not, but I thought I saw it posted that Mikimoto no longer wanted to get involved with any TV/film productions? Probably. At 55, running on the hectic schedule of TV/Film probably doesn't thrill him.
skullmilitia Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Honestly It feels like Frontier got such a new audience huge following for Macross, and has such a huge looming finale, that I would suspect, cash wise, there will be some resolutions from Frontier in some way, some how. I mean that huge, young, women fan base gained, wants to see the real end of triangle.Even if it's another fleet ends up finding the "now" Vajra home planet, with Alto.giving him a cameo, as he gets folded back to Frontier and Sherly. Even for a quick cameo would make a lot of newer fans happy. who knows.
jvmacross Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Nah....the "new" fans should also have to deal with vague and unresolved endings to their generation's beloved Macross characters...and just like some of the fans of the original Macross series.... be left longing for "closure" for decades to come!
David Hingtgen Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 8 years is plenty of time to build Grace 3.0 More realistically though, bring back Mylene. She could be the aging former idol trying to cling to her glory days. (since she'd be like 30-something, which is ancient in that profession)
Thom Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I thought the movies were just movie versions of the series... Such as DYRL was to the original series. They had such different endings, with the movie version going along the lines of Macross Zero, where the hero just disappears. Whereas in the series, Alto was last scene flying through the skies rather than disappearing into the aether and going who knows where. Not the ending I liked by the way and is thus - except for the squadron of Macross Quarters at the end - forgotten... Personally, I think if there should be some crossover characters, it should be the second string. I'd like to see Klan again, and Luca and Nananse and especially Ozma and Kathy! Even as just little spots just to see how they're doing. Perhaps to find some room away from Michael's memory, Klan takes a new assignment with Macross Delta! Maybe she'll be the main character! Please Kawamori!!
jvmacross Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Bringing back a character or several of them from a previous Macross show is like a secondary "pillar of Macross TV shows"......it wouldn't be too far fetched to see it happen with the new series...but which one?
Roy Focker Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Honestly It feels like Frontier got such a new audience huge following for Macross, and has such a huge looming finale, that I would suspect, cash wise, there will be some resolutions from Frontier in some way, some how. Even for a quick cameo would make a lot of newer fans happy. who knows. The Macross series are seldom direct sequels to previous series. A few characters have reappeared in multiple series but the focus was always on the new characters. With Macross (Delta) being set so close to Frontier's timeline I'm sure there will be plenty of nods to it to keep the new fans happy.
Nekko Basara Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 More realistically though, bring back Mylene. She could be the aging former idol trying to cling to her glory days. (since she'd be like 30-something, which is ancient in that profession)I would absolutely LOVE to see Mylene again, but I have to ask - was she ever really an "idol?" A girl doing bass and vocals in rock band doesn't really fit the idol mold. The one time the show portrayed her as a typical idol, her only fans were some perverts with a camera, and a totally crazy kid. And when they tried to make a real idol out of her in Mylene Beat...well, the less said about that, the better.I dunno. The aging idol trope just doesn't fit Mylene in my opinion, because I don't think she was ever a young idol.
jenius Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 No offense but 'an aging idol trying to cling to her glory days' sounds like a wretched show to watch. If we get a Mac7 cameo I hope it's Gamlin. Funny twist, Gamlin should be married to a different Jenius girl than Mylene.

I thought in the Manga she took off to look for him. Damn the Galaxy is full of lost idols and pilots. Edited October 22, 2014 by skullmilitia
David Hingtgen Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 No offense but 'an aging idol trying to cling to her glory days' sounds like a wretched show to watch. It'd just be a minor plot-point as a foil against the new singer. How much were Max and Milia in 7? It'd be like that. Of course the focus would be the "new triangle".
charger69 Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) If that means Nanase appears, too, then I'm all for it. I demand Colonel Klan Klang! Edited October 22, 2014 by charger69

Risa Ebata was the character designer for both Frontier and AK0048, another more recent anime original by Satelight, so good chance she will do the character designs for the new Macross. Her style is not my cup of tea, so I'm hoping for someone else. Edited October 22, 2014 by Bri

Roy Focker Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I would expect to see more Idol Singers wearing a dozens upon dozens of colorful elaborate outfits, underage effeminate looking boys dressed like Popeye, catchy pop music, terrific CGI Mecha porn, a enemy that's there but has no personality what so ever.
Brand-X Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Ya know, Macross Plus is definitely my favourite Macross series, probably because it has so many elements that are completely unlike every other Macross. More mature characters and situations, less focus on the singing, no magic, a real human enemy (I don't mean literally human, but having actual characterization) and a close focus on a few main characters, rather than having a bunch of one-shot characters that only show up when needed for the plot, and are thus given completely two dimensional characterization. Part of that is because of the length, it's nice and short and thus the tight focus really added to the show. I wish they could find a bit of the magic that they found when making Plus again.
Gerli Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 A totally bald Captain Gamlin Kizaki in charge of Battle Delta. THIS THIS ESTO!
Renato Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) Brand-X I like Macross Plus as well, but I like most other Macross shows just about as much, if not more. I don't think it's so "completely unlike" the others. Let me see.. -More mature characters and situations --> The plot literally goes out of its way (nonsensically, even, just watch Episode 2) to highlight Guld's and Isamu's immaturity -Less focus on singing --> Sharon Apple? -No magic (I thought you wanted them to re-capture it! ) ---> Sharon Apple hypnotized everybody in Macross City... how? -A real human enemy... Erm.. sorry to sound like a broken record, but... SHARON APPLE?? Umm, I don't think you watched Macross Plus, but Cowboy Bebop, instead. Your checklist seems more compatible with that. But hey, it's Watanabe and Kanno, easy mistake to make! EDIT -- phrasing Edited October 22, 2014 by Renato
aceoftherebellion Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Breetai, Exedor, Kamjin, Feff, Gigil, Sivil, Ivanov, Nora... I'll give you the Vajra don't have much personality, but Grace was the real antagonist of Frontier TV version- I'd say every single one of them had more personality/were more humanized characters than Shalon Apple, so as much as I love plus, I can't agree with that at all. If anything I'd consider it to be one of the defining traits of the franchise, and one I look forward to in the sequel. Kind of agree that I'd like to see a new character designer step in just because a new look might be nice, but then again that's also what plus and zero did and those have my least favorite character designs, so I'm fairly neutral on that count too.
vsim Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 In my mind, it's just not Macross without variables fighters and singing. Or at least singing is important after the original TV series. Honestly I like the music from almost all of the series. Even Zero has some really good non-vocal songs. Maybe Delta will be full Artifically Intelligent transforming fighters that reach self awareness and sing!!! And they all go on a hunt throughout the universe looking for Basara! Because robots should sing too .
Sevket_Erhat Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 As long as there are lots of mecha fighting I am in. I like some of the songs but those love triangles are not needed anymore
Kyp Durron Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 One thing I really miss about the first Macross series is that it took place only 27 years (from 1982) in the near future. Every big series took place about 50 years in the future from the air date. Since 2067 is very close to the time of Macross Frontier. I predict the look of the series won't drift too far away. Nor should it, in my honest opinion. Meanwhile, HG is still trying to figure out how to PLAN a new show... I am happy for bandai sponsoring the show. I know the Pre-order madness is there, but at least, it is not 300 to 400 usd per pop. What good is that when you're not even able to order the Goddamned things?!
no3Ljm Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I only wish that this new one will have a good and yet somehow different than traditional endings that will keep you hanging from your seat. I know Animes always end up with a hanging ending only to find out later on that you have to read mangas for the right or proper conclusions. Which I'm not saying I don't like it. But it will look cool though to watch it in proper anime rendition instead of reading it. And of course, I wish there's more dogfights and make them longer than focusing on the idols face while singing.
UN Spacy Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I would like a return to villain's that're interesting. The Zentradi were great....so were the Protodevlin. Not as much with the Vajra and their human collaborators.
Thom Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I wouldn't say the humans were collaborators. They were the puppet masters.
Zinjo Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 (edited) whatever it is, i can't wait. i'll just so i hope its stylistically different enough from frontier where it doesn't feel like we're watching the same thing. for instance i don't think the yf-30 is different enough from the other frontier era valks to be different enough to be the hero valk in the new series. that is just using valks as a talking point but i feel the same way for the art style, story telling etc. for example frontier felt way different than zero, as did zero from m7 etc. i hope the fact that bandai is involved yet again, doesn't mean we get essentially macross frontier style with a new story/chjaracters etc. Macross 7 had no new Valk designs. The Varauta valks were re-cycled designs from a failed non-Macross series. The YF-19 and the YF-21 from Plus became the VF-19 and VF-22 respectively. It is entirely conceivable that the YF-30, may become the VF-31 and as Azreal said, we may see valks like a VF-24, VF-25 Tornado, VF-27 and VF-29's to capitalize on the Bandai molds that already exist. The accessories and paint schemes would be all that would require any new tooling (new wings and canopy in terms of the VF-24). M7 had a lot of VF on VF battles and so did M0, so I am hoping they go with that format again. It makes for much more exciting dog fight sequences. The question would be what would the premise be to support such mecha battles. The first premises that come to mind are either a proxy war at the height of cold war tensions or an all out civil war in the UN Federation of Colonial States between the Earth Federal forces and Colonial States. Kawamori already established in "Macross: The Ride" that Federal tech is not fully shared with colonial worlds and that the two militaries do not always have the same equipment. McFly!! Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 lots of great news, ideas and predictions! wish list: 1. characters in various "shades of gray" between good and evil (and hopefully moving between different shades as well) 2. completely new storyline 3. completely new valks (and new transforming non-planes please!) 4. characters past their teens 5. netflix-style "here's the whole season, watch it when you feel like it" release (it would be great if we could get it on netflix directly too!)
Thom Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Wan't it a civil type war that brought down the Protoculture..? I wonder if history might start repeating itself.
Gubaba Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 lots of great news, ideas and predictions! wish list: ... 4. characters past their teens 5. netflix-style "here's the whole season, watch it when you feel like it" release (it would be great if we could get it on netflix directly too!) A couple things to bear in mind... first, Netflix doesn't exist in Japan. Heck, video rental stores are still big! (Hulu, however, does exist, but I'm not sure how popular it is... most of my Japanese friends use it only to watch American TV shows.) Next, it's a TV series. TV anime is generally aimed at junior high school kids (yes, even Attack on Titan), so characters tend to be around the same age as the target audience. If it were an OVA or something, it could be different... but it's not.
