Because Sentinels is already seen as a failed attempt. They really need that LAM to be able to pitch duds like that again, assuming that the LAM is even successful. Even if this KS passes 500k... it would have been better for it to hit it out of the ballpark to even be taken seriously. If you go into a studio and showed them the numbers of supporter for this project, they'd be scared to touch it. And on top of all that, you'd need to show an incredible looking pilot that's up to today's standards that can be done on a budget. Those are the people that are really going to need to know where the 500k went and how much each episode is going to cost them. If it happens I'd be interested to see if Creavision makes the cut...

Man I'm still hoping they pull it out of the hat.

What am I going to do with all this popcorn?

Very well said, and this thing not only needs very impressive animation but a quality storyline to match and simply don't see HG pulling that off. Kinda sad when you think the one decent story they had is viewed as such a failure due to the 3 partial episodes, not to mention the forgettable movie it was turned into. I'd mention "Robotech the Movie" aka Megazone23.... but really do we need to go there?

If they do and thats a big if in pulling this KS off with a miracle, will be interesting to see what becomes of this story.

And if you have popcorn, share some! B))

That's weird... it looks like someone pulled their money out. It went down by $30 over the last hour... I wonder if they're starting to try to kick the critics out. You could almost understand them doing it, since today's "big reveal" at SDCC was (reportedly) that they went and found some vanity press company to print the Robotech Academy artbook backer reward. Not a lot of ways to polish that turd.

Kicktraq's prediction actually went up 1% thanks to that guy who chipped in a few grand to get to the $10k tier yesterday, though it's still sitting at a mere 64% and looks like it'll start trending back down unless there's a surge day tomorrow.

SideKick's hit an all-time low for its prediction of this getting funded, a whopping 7% chance of success.

In my opinion, the Robotech Academy KS still have a huge chance of success.

If you get some of the hardcore robotech.com members, there are like three or two of them?

All of them have two kidneys and they only need one to survive.

Don't go giving them ideas... some of them are just nuts enough to try, and the ones that are are old enough to buy power tools and dumb enough to try it at home. :p

Still, tomorrow's the do-or-die day. The SDCC attendees who bothered to stop by Harmony Gold's booth are reporting that they didn't have anything newsworthy except that they'd picked a vanity press printer to do the backer reward art book, so unless the announcement they're going to make at tomorrow's 7pm panel really sets the world on fire they're hosed.

Maybe the big surprise is going to be that they've made the first half of the pilot with their own money, thus explaining where all the teasers they've promoted so far came from.

Why are people complaining about negative comments when HG invited it? It's another stupid, immature and desperate move by HG that annoys their own fans... they should be used to it... lol.

What am I going to do with all this popcorn?

I warned you about buying that palette of corn kernels.

You guys are negative... I want this to happen! I have been emailing people this all day:

Since EXO bought all the damn popcorn, we need something to entertain us while we eat. ALL. THAT. POPCORN.

And if you have popcorn, share some! B))

*points at palette* Help yourself. Needs flavoring.

It is preview-night tonight. Any news?

Here's what they need to do. They need some NAME recognition on this kickstarter. Their staff simply isn't pulling their weight as is.

I propose they have some of their employees get legal name changes so they can advertise it as "Robotech Academy: by James Cameron and Steven Spielberg"

Alternatively, find some guys off the street with suspiciiously familiar names.

It is preview-night tonight. Any news?

Nothing buzzworthy thus far, the only piece of news that's come out of SDCC and reached my ears so far is that Harmony Gold has chosen a printing company to print the Robotech Academy art book backer reward. I've got some friends attending SDCC, and I'd say they were not amused or impressed by how little Harmony Gold brought to whet the appetites of their audience who might attend today's panel discussion. The Kickstarter comments section is still a seething ocean of recrimination and hostility, and they've finally noticed the commentary here on MacrossWorld about the Harmony Gold apologists trying their hand at (and having a conspicuous lack of success in) keeping the vocal critics of Harmony Gold's business practices and "give us your cash and we'll make something, honest" pitch at bay.

Tonight's the night... sink or swim, do or die, and all that rot.

Going into it, it's not looking good. There was about a 28% increase in the dollar amount pledged yesterday, but that's 28% over the five or six day average of about $2,413.60, so $3,101. I was predicting a lot more response from SDCC than that, something more on the order of a 400% jump for a few days (~$10k+ per day) until it petered out. Since we know Harmony Gold didn't keep the Robotech Academy Kickstarter under wraps there, that indicates a strong possibility that most of the people they're hoping to pitch this to tonight are already aware of it and have already contributed... so there's a decent chance we won't see a significant spike in pledges tonight or tomorrow either. That underwhelming response from SDCC was enough to push SideKick's success prediction for Robotech Academy down to 6% and aggressively resume the downward 3% dip in Kicktraq's prediction, which now sits at 61% of total (~$308k), with a projected min/max of between $225k and $296k. I think we'll continue to see those fall in the coming days, since they were only momentarily arrested in their drop by that one guy who upped his pledge to $10,000 two days back.

As often as Robotech has ended in abject and hilarious failure, I'm amazed everyone's friend Mr. Alan Smithee hasn't ended up involved at some point.

The next Robotech project, of course!

I'm sure it's already there, a dark idea, waiting...

But that's five years away! How will will pass the time?

I've responded more to this topic than any other one.

Unless the announcement is about the live action movie finally starting filming, I doubt this pilot will go anywhere.

As dad as it will make me, I hope HG relinquishes it's rights on the franchise.

Sorta remind me of Donald Sterling and the Clippers fiasco. Fighting tooth and nail.

Maybe someone can get a doctor to deem HG incapable of properly managing macross.

Who knows? With a little luck, and if today's presentation fails to arrest the steady downward trend of the Kickstarter, this might actually end up being the last Robotech project... or at least the last one under Yune, Yun, and McKeever. Maybe that picture of Steve being escorted out by security that was put up as an April Fool's joke a few years back will turn out to be very prophetic indeed.

Fat chance of that happening, the live-action movie's so doomed that they'd be lucky if it got a direct-to-video release at a level of quality equaling Starship Troopers 3: Marauder. Their big announcement will probably be another bait-and-switch like they did in their promotion of Robotech: the Shadow Chronicles... "we're finally gonna reveal the fate of Admiral Rick Hunter, guys!", followed by a solid year of fans grumbling about how he showed up on a viewscreen for thirty seconds and promptly disappeared again.

It's kinda sad that even the guys attempting to defend Robotech Academy are starting to admit that this is basically turning into a more blatant than usual attempt to rip off Macross. The general feeling I'm getting from them is one of weary resignation, and of their defense of it being more for form's sake than because they actually believe something will come of this. The fanatics would defend this to the death, naturally, but even the comments section on the Kickstarter has started to talk about how all this "Do it for Carl" stuff is in profoundly awful taste.

SDCC's been open for about three hours now, and so far the Kickstarter's take for the day is only $673, from a mere 9 people, and most of that gain is existing backers upping their contribution.

So they care more for a book publisher than this pilot episode? Under normal circumstances, an art/production art book comes after a show has started because you don't want to waste money in case the show doesn't make it. But they want to do a book, before the show even makes it to production? Will any of that $.5M be used on that book? I'm seeing a priorities issue with this production. I understand you want to give people incentives to donate, but a artbook being done the same time or before the actual show? If you hand out actual production art like cels, OK, I get that. But a book? I seriously hope people in tonight's audience put away the nostalgia goggles and look at this investment seriously. I'm not even looking at this from the "Macross-fanboy-RAGE!!!"-side and I see issues.

WAIT! There's an part 3 to StarshipTroopers?

Yeah, with Casper van Dien and the obnoxious fish-faced chick from Star Trek: Enterprise, no less.

It's god awful, but it's still way more watchable than Robotech: the Shadow Chronicles.

[shortened for quoting purposes]

Good points.

And let's say the Kickstarter funding actually does succeed. Then what? They say a 24 min. pilot will be made and it'll be used to pitch to the networks. What makes anyone believe that a network will pick it up and fund a series? A 20+ year old property that ...

now has very little name recognition...has had lackluster success since the end of the original series... that the new series is trying to tie to....by a company that hasn't produced much or has had much success in recent memory?

They might have more success if it wasn't Robotech.

I've had a thought about that. Typically when consumer confidence in a product or company has faltered, you can either reinvent the brand or change the brand/company name. However, I don't think that will work in the case of Robotech. Others have told us that Harmony Gold is primarily in the real estate business and their media business is mostly functioning as a reseller/distributor. It's also clear Robotech is a tiny, less significant part of the larger company. So in the Real Estate world Harmony Gold might have name recognition and goodwill. Also, Robotech wouldn't be a significant enough part of Harmony Gold to justify changing the entire corporate name. They could possibly work around changing the Harmony Gold name by creating a sub-division or child company with a different name just for Robotech. But that would require the sub-division/company to justify the expense of doing so by being economically viable. If the name "Robotech" is dropped, the animated production couldn't rely upon existing fans or industry recognition and would have to sell based on the merits of the animated show itself. Clearly, no one at Harmony Gold wants THAT to happen :p:lol:

What are we all going to talk about once this kickstarter is over?

see, this is why I wanted the kickstarter to do well, we would have gotten like half a decade of unintentionally funny discussion out of it if they actually got to work making a new show.

To which console was that game in 2:02?

Robotech Battlecry was released for all three major consoles of the period (Nintendo Gamecube, Sony Playstation 2, Microsoft XBox). It had lukewarm sales at best, and the Gamecube release was roundly condemned for having more bugs than pixels and a tendency to lock up that would shame the most diligent jailer.

In retrospect, its cinematics look better than Robotech Academy does... and that's sad for all kinds of different reasons.

Better response! and yes so sad when a VG group can outdo a company that solely does animation.

I have for GC, but he look some different. I mean, all that "status bars" and map, I not seen it in the game, so I figured it was some other new or remake with the same engine for tablets.

Still 15 days left to go. Anything can happen. Maybe even another $10,000 weirdo donor.

And nice to know folks on the KS comments page are already looking at us with contempt. It's not our fault we're looking at this with some objectivity.

My first time ever looking at the comments section on the kickstarter, 5 mins ago. who is merijeek, he sounds like he's from MW... and why are they complaining? HG put in a kick-starter level specifically to voice hate at HG and robotech. so it's welcomed.. are the backers that dumb that they don't know their own company put in a tier for that? As dumb people are always dumb, they blame the macross guys for commenting instead of HG for promoting it...

i guess they're stupid enough to back the reasons HG is doing the kickstarter without using, being allowed to use, their own company's money.

Just goes to show that Harmony Gold's efforts to condition the fans to believe that anything Robotech is solid gold and all their ills are secretly the fault of the evil Macross purist troll Illuminati Priory of Scion Lizardman Ancient Alien Government Mind Control Chemtrail conspiracy* haven't been entirely ineffective. Usually a conspiracy allegedly headed up by yours truly, because I am beloved of the average Robotech fan.

* The things they actually say about this are scarcely more sane than that, I wish I were kidding.

Most of the folks on there seem to be more reasonable than that though, with a lot of them saying that they'd prefer it if HG wasn't raising so much negative press by blocking Macross, or how much they wish they could get Macross and Robotech side by side instead of in an adversarial relationship.

In that case, where's the rest if it?

Again, that question should be pointed to the panel, tonight. He would be the 2nd person to state RTSC did well. If it did well, then why didn't they follow-up? When we have successful movies, immediately, there's talk of a sequel. Not for RTSC, apparently.

Don't forget "slender man" and how he convinced all of us to "kill" a robotech purist or we would pay dearly for it. (all that through the power of the Internet)
