jenius Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 This is exactly why we need a smaller scale line of valkyries. I don't want to spend $200 on that thing. You might be able to convince me to spend $79.99 on one though. Quote

3D-Brainx Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 This has probably been already discussed, but, isn't Valkyrie the name of the VF-1? like phoenix for the vf-0 or thunderbolt for the vf-11?. We call every other vf a Valkyrie just because the popularity of the vf-1, but calling every valk a Valkyrie is a mistake, right? and if this is not the case, what's the name of the vf-1? Just adding some spice to the whole "gender in a plane" discussion. Quote
aceoftherebellion Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 In-universe, the VF-1 was so ubiquitous and had so much impact that all variable fighters are colloquially referred to as Valkyries regardless of their other designations. It's pretty much the same case for the fandom. Quote
technoblue Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 The MAXL has no more or less of a chest than any other VF-11 variant. Take another look at the strategic placement of the UN Spacey kites on the 11B and 11C. The Sound Force features on the MAXL replace these in the original line art. However, interpretation does not equal artistic intent. If someone wants to see breasts in their mecha, then they will see breasts in their mecha whether there are kites or just gadgets. I still think it is important to point out that no one is talking about sexualized or pornographic art here. It is just a custom mech that is made to look like a rock star. It's supposed to be fun and entertaining. Besides, other anime old and new, have done mecha with a feminine flair too. I can understand If one doesn't like the glam rock look, or the idea of Sound Force in general. That is fair enough. No one should feel the need to make excuses for that opinion or bring rule 34 into the discussion. But the MAXL is not a silly design. It is different because it provides a function specific to Sound Force, just like the VF-17T and Basara's VF-19. I think Arcadia would do well to release the rest of the squad at 1/60. Part of me wishes that they started with the MAXL just so we could move on. That would have been fantastic: http://www.macross2.net/m3/macross7/vf-11maxlcustom.htm Quote

That would have been fantastic: http://www.macross2.net/m3/macross7/vf-11maxlcustom.htm There are indeed bumps on the VF-11 MAXL Kai intended to resemble human female mammaries that aren't on any of the VF-11 variants including the normal VF-11 MAXL. If that isn't clear from the 2D line art, you can look up the various kits of the MAXL Kai and it should be pretty apparent then. Yes, it's been done in other anime, but those tended to be on super robot franchises like Mazinger. Most people correlate Macross to the real robot genre where the Sound Force valks are more super robot-ish, which accounts for the general disdain for the Sound Force customs. Quote
jvmacross Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Part of me wishes that they started with the MAXL just so we could move on. That would have been fantastic: I think if Yamato would have released the VF-11 MAXL first, we may never have seen a VF-19 Kai.....kind of how releasing the DYRL Quadeluun Rau killed any desire for Yamato/Arcadia in releasing anymore enemy mechs..... Look how "well" the re-release of the Kai "gold edition" set is warming shelves on practically all Japanese webstore sites.... If Arcadia wants to do well on a unique release like the VF-11 MAXL it needs to tweak it's "made-to-order" business plan to be more "kickstarter-like".....it gets built if enough people pay to have it built.... Or just wait for some 3P to make it!!! Quote
MacrossJunkie Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 (edited) I take it the VF-19 Kai is not doing so well in sales? That would not be surprising to me given that there were still plenty of the first release sitting around for a while at large discounts. Even the sound booster was easily available for a while at a discounted price. Most people who wanted them probably would have gotten one already. The high price of this re-release, granted it's a bundle of the 19 kai and the booster and includes the Fire Bomber figures, for such a polarizing design makes it a hard sell in general. I wouldn't mind having the VF-11C MAXL variant. That is to say the normal delta winged version of the VF-11 and not the Sound Force MAXL Kai variant. Edited October 3, 2014 by MacrossJunkie Quote

No one is questioning the fact that the MAXL is made to look like a woman. The problem I have with the discussion is that the MAXL is somehow offensive or silly because, as a custom, it is more obviously so. There is nothing wrong with it. And, again, it is not pornographic or trying to mimic the organic function of breasts in anime on some ridiculous level. The MAXL's sci-fantasy pods only fend off aliens with light and sound. I maintain that people do not like it because of where it sits within the uncanny valley. Or because Macross 7 turned away from the military/gundam notes of the original SDF series. Again, that's fine. But the Sound Force designs are not poor because more fans in the West are turned off by them. Quote

I don't know. I question the strategy to reissue the VF-19 Kai when so many of the Yamato types were still readily available at a heavy discount. Personally, I wasn't interested in double dipping because I picked up my Yamato right before Arcadia's announcement. Now, if Arcadia had announced another 1/60 Sound Force Valkyrie, I would have given them my full attention. Not just because I like Macross 7, but also as a collector. I like the VF-11 (I have the 11B) and I'm drawn to unique Valkyries like the MAXL. Of course, I also would have taken the VF-17T custom. Oops. Double post...Sorry about that... I probably misunderstood the first paragraph of your post I was referencing, but I wasn't really speaking of whether it was made to look like a woman, but merely pointing out that there was a difference in shape/curvature in the "chest" area between the normal VF-11s and the MAXL Kai and that it wasn't merely just interpretation in the eye of the beholder that the curvature was there. Right. I understood your point too. I was just pointing out that the kites are in the same place and if people want to point and shout, "Breasts!" or whatever word they are comfortable with, then they will regardless. Mecha look like people for a reason, and rule 34 exists for a reason. Some of us are just more creative with our reasoning than others? LoL! It's all good. None of this is hurting anyone, so there is room for every opinion. Quote
Kanedas Bike Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 IMHO rule 34 has nothing to do with what people are talking about re: the VF-11 MAXL. Just people expressing their opinion on whether or not the design speaks to them or not (some think silly because of certain design features some think unique and interesting because of the same). Anyway, on-topic I'd be curious to know about sales of the new VF-19 and if Arcadia was shrewd enough to make this in small quantities understanding that the first release is still fairly easy to find in the marketplace. -b. Fair enough. I may have misunderstood what everyone was on about. However, most Valkyries do have a human shape. And the Macross 7 Valkyries moved beyond the usual asexual look of SDF Macross and gave them faces and adjusted the form to suit the setting. Along with the usual pilots, we get custom made fighters tricked out to look like a rock band. The idea that the Valkyries themselves are suggestive stand-ins for the band members when they fly out to defend against the Protodevlin is just part of the story. Some people like it and some don't. No worries. Quote

It was just the three valks assigned to the members of Sound Force that received "faces".... the rest were "faceless" and in-line with "regular" VF "heads" seen in previous Macross series'..... ...even the "jamming birds" VF-11 didn't get a "face"....
