nobbyxr8 Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Recently I got 3 vf-1a unassembled kits for $50 each and wanted to have a crack and painting them below are the 90% complete photos of what I like to call the VF-1A trainer. Idea being its the aircraft used after the VF-1D trainer for new pilots. I have tried to make it look as tho Yamato them selves have made this kit. Enjoy! Quote
aaajin Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 looks very clean and legit, almost like an OEM from Yamato! cant wait to see the final product! Quote
barurutor Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 It seems to be missing the black marks on the chest plate and the black stripe on the heatshield, but that's just my opinion. How did you paint it? Quote
nobbyxr8 Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 since its a vf-1a wan`t going to go with any black on the chest of heat shield but not that you`ve said it, it does look like its missing something. all painted with an airbrush and Mr color paints hold up well on my gundams about the joints and seems to be good on these yamatos as well Quote
Valkyrie addict Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Awesome! well done!! I think what seems off is that the base color is white instead of tan, but I prefer the white/orange combo better. Can't wait to see it finished. I see you painted the canopy and black nose detail instead of using the decals, those parts are a pain to decal. Quote
CoreyD Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I really, really like this set up! Back in the day we used to joke that the orange paint on training aircraft used to mean "student pilot, KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! " Quote
MechTech Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Needs a BIG "L" sticker like in the UK for "Learner" That looks great AND clean! Nice idea and creative scheme. - MT Quote
mickyg Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Love it! Good tip about the Mr Color paint. I've been thinking lacquer would be a much better choice than the acrylics I've been using for my custom. Quote
nobbyxr8 Posted January 6, 2014 Author Posted January 6, 2014 Valkyrie addict, I did try the canopy decal at first but it looked terrible. And this is the first time i've done masking so very happy with how its turned out. Mickyg, lacquer paints are the only way to go for a hard wearing great finish. Living in Australia does make the mr color paints hard to get thoe Quote
mickyg Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) Not as hard as you'd think. I've got a local place that stocks them. I'll be keeping that in mind for my next project. Where abouts are you? Edited January 6, 2014 by mickyg Quote

Where abouts are you? live an hour out of Perth. I normaly make orders from BNA hobbies in vic, they normally have a good range if I haven`t cleaned them out the month before. Perth wise no one stocks it any more. I just had a look over your vf-1s custom paint looks good! Quote
Valkyrie addict Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Valkyrie addict, I did try the canopy decal at first but it looked terrible. And this is the first time i've done masking so very happy with how its turned out. First time masking? wow, great job!!, the first time I masked I made a whole mess by being inpatient. It's better to paint the canopy, the decal is glossy and stands out later by it. Quote
chyll2 Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 if only i can get it here for $50 as well. only found it here once locally and priced at $120 Quote
Mommar Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Wow, where did you find 3 of them for $50??? Quote
Mommar Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 I understand. I can't find one at $50 to say nothing of three. Quote
