areaseven Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Maleficent is Disney's live-action prequel/remake of their 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty. The film marks the directorial debut of production designer Robert Stromberg (Alice in Wonderland, Oz the Great and Powerful) and stars Angelina Jolie (like no one here knows who she is...) as the iconic Disney villain. Also starring are Elle Fanning (Dakota Fanning's lesser-known sister) as Princess Aurora, Sharlto Copley (Wikus in District 9, Kruger in Elysium) as King Stefan, Brendon Thwaites (Jonas in The Giver) as Prince Phillip, Juno Temple (Jen in The Dark Knight Rises, Sally in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) as Thistlewit, Sam Riley (Vincent in 13, Darvell in Byzantium) as Diaval, Miranda Richardson (Rita Skeeter in the Harry Potter series, Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland) as Queen Ulla, and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake, Dolores Jane Umbridge in the Harry Potter series) as Knotgrass. The film hits theaters on May 30, 2014. Official Site Quote
David Hingtgen Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Also starring are Elle Fanning (Dakota Fanning's lesser-known sister) as Princess Aurora, AKA Sleeping Beauty. (because like 19/20 people don't know who "Princess Aurora" is) Quote
renegadeleader1 Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Well wether or not this movie is bad we know one thing is for certain, Angelina is gong to chew up the scenery. Quote
anime52k8 Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 AKA Sleeping Beauty. (because like 19/20 people don't know who "Princess Aurora" is) I know who that is (like Disney far too much). Well wether or not this movie is bad we know one thing is for certain, Angelina is gong to chew up the scenery. I'm still not 100% sure if they're actively trying to make her cheekbones sharper/more pronounced through makeup or if that's just her freaky skeletor face. I swear you could cut diamonds on those things. Quote

GU-11 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Saw the trailer today and thought the same thing. No way those cheeks are natural--has to be special effect makeup. Looks more like those freaky implants done by those guys trying to turn themselves into cat people or something. Quote
areaseven Posted May 27, 2014 Author Posted May 27, 2014 (edited) Less than three days left before the premiere and no reviews have popped up online. Meanwhile, to no surprise... Edited May 30, 2014 by areaseven Quote
Kanedas Bike Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 ^So if it's not being screened for critics do we think, that Disney thinks, it's a stinker? My interest has kind of gone up after seeing some of the later trailers, but still not enough to go check this out in the theaters (outside of date night or something). -b. Quote
the white drew carey Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Does she have her awful "Transylvanian" accent from Alexander? 'Cuz I'm always up for a laugh. Quote
TangledThorns Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Less than three days left before the premiere and no reviews have popped up online. Hmmm, same goes for a 'A Million Ways to Die In the West' as well. The optimist in me says there isn't any reviews yet because of the Memorial Day Weekend, the pessimist thinks its because they both suck. Quote

Dynaman Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 My wife wants to see this opening day (her movie selection turn). I'll post a thumbs up/down then. Quote
Uxi Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 From the trailers, they're doing what I guessed they were going to do and make her the poor misunderstood anti-hero and all the good guys from Disney were really bad guys. Definitely going to wait to the bootleg download. Quote
TangledThorns Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Ugh, the reviews are coming and this film is looking more like a skip. Quote
areaseven Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 Not surprised. Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 54% Metacritic Score: 52 out of 100 Quote
Black Valkyrie Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 To bad, I was hoping it would turn out better than that over rated Frozen. Quote
renegadeleader1 Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 So apparently the brazzers version has better plot, acting, and special effects? Quote
TangledThorns Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 This is really disappointing as I thought Disney would hold this kind of film to a much higher standard. Makes me worry about the next Star Wars film. Quote
Kanedas Bike Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Damn that last review was crushing; "literally write a thesis on the ineptitude on display..." OUCH -b. Quote
mechaninac Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Ouch is right... If even 1/3 of that review is on the money, then Disney's Maleficent isn't even worthy of a Redbox rental, and will be quickly and deservedly relegated to basic cable filler rotation. Quote
areaseven Posted May 30, 2014 Author Posted May 30, 2014 More butthurt coming up... Time to forget this and pop in the Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray. Quote
Thom Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 I thought it was pretty good. Not great, unfortuneately, but real good. A little too short time-wise with some themes drawn too long and others a little too short. Still, I'll buy it on Blue-ray and watch it again. Quote
Negotiator Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 I actually went to go watch it. I enjoyed it for the most part. Ya there's a few things that could have been done a little better but in the end I'm watching a fairy tale...so. Quote
Chronocidal Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Quality or not, people are shelling out money to see it, it seems. Quote
Thom Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 That's why I don't listen to reviews. Most often they don't like what I like. I'm going to see it again. Quote
Chewie Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I enjoyed the hell out of this movie. Not even going to bother with that review if you guys are saying it's THAT bad. Quote
skullmilitia Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Not sure what crack these "critics" are smoking, but for a guy who doesn't like Disney movies. This is a solid two thumbs up. Thoroughly enjoyed the Movie. It's a relief to finally watch a movie with A good story. See it, even if you don't like Disney, it will surpass your expectations. Quote
CrazyDude Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I wasn't going to see the film in cinemas, bit disappointed from what I hear but waiting for reviews from friends. Personally think Jolie is well suited for the role, but not too surprised lost a LOT of respect for Disney. Quote
Thom Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 (edited) She is greatly suited to the role! I watched it again today and I liked it even better than the first time! I think disney is using sublminial messages again... I went to an early show so there weren't a lot of people, but there were several young girls present, and I thought it was great when one of them cheered near the end. Those who've seen it could probably imagine when it was called for. Great performance from Jolie and a great story, awesome cinematography and a great soundtrack... I can't wait for this to come out on Blu-Ray! Edited June 1, 2014 by Thom Quote
skullmilitia Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 I figured it out, people think that the original Disney cartoon is the "Holy Book" of the Story of sleeping beauty. Then again most Movie critics are not film makers, so It's the same as a Hot Dog Vender telling Kobe Bryant how to make a proper free throw. Quote
