Synopsis

When another megalodon breaks free from its suspended animation and wreaks havoc in the seas, the U.S. Navy comes up with a solution: a giant mechanical shark.

Lowdown

Well, it was inevitable. The Asylum has cashed in on the hype of last year's Sharknado with yet another Mega Shark movie. Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark is your typical schlock you expect from The Asylum: an inane script, low-rent special effects, laughable acting and a cast of has-been actors. In the case of the latter, you have Stargate SG-1 alumnus Christopher Judge and Angel star Elisabeth Röhm, who both look confused throughout the film as they've apparently never worked with such low-quality material. Debbie Gibson fans will probably be disappointed, as she only has five minutes of screen time and all she does is talk over the phone in her office.

As for the rest of the film, it's a lot better than Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus, but that's not saying much. The trailers advertise the Mecha Shark as the only solution to combat the megalodon, but aside from the mid-air tackle, it's actually very useless. The Mecha Shark uses an A.I. named "Nero", whose voice vaguely resembles William "K.I.T.T." Daniels, but its role is never solidly determined because it's frequently offline. There are other characters in this film such as a female Australian news reporter and a six-year-old girl, but despite their prominent screen time, their importance to the story is non-existent. And given the outcome of the battle itself, it's a huge disappointment compared to Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus.

In short, Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark is not the worst of the Mega Shark trilogy, but still a considerable disappointment. As a matter of fact, there's a scene where Judge rides a motorcycle and jumps over the Mecha Shark; that about sums up the whole film.

Rating: D+
