Fokkusu
Does anyone know of the 1986 anime OVA California Crisis? What do you think of it? I personally love it. The high-contrast art style is amazing, the music is cool, and the storyline has some amazingly silly moments that are entertaining to watch. Keep an eye out for the loudest top-secret conversation ever, the stereotypical Native American guy with baffling "words of wisdom," an alien artifact that looks like a bowling ball, and more. Especially the ending, which is so ridiculous and anti-climactic that I personally think it was intentionally made that way. Maybe it's trying to be postmodern, like with that whole "journey is more important than the destination" thing. Or maybe the writers were as drunk as the main character Noera usually is. Either way it's pretty funny and the visual style is great. California Crisis has been subbed by Box fansubs, and there are also a couple of raws floating around out there. I happen to have the nicer of the two raws I've seen out on the internet. So I've started a fandubbing project, but so far there are only three voice actors for it. Would anyone with a decent microphone be willing to help out? Here's the fandub site, with more information and contact info: http://californiacrisis.wordpress.com/
danth
I agree with everything you say about it and will be trying to get that fansub; thanks for the heads up on that. I've only seen it raw so far. For some reason I categorize this anime with Birth and Redline. They all involve a lot of chasing/racing scenes, all have distinct animation styles, and all have anti-climactic, weird endings. Birth had somewhat simple designs but ridiculously fluid animation with "moving camera" effects. Both California Crisis and Redline have that high contrast look you mentioned -- one of the first things I noticed when watching Redline.
