There was once an episode of a Podcast, long ago, that asked a question: What would happen in Macross if the roles of pilot and musician were reversed? In any case, I thought this would make an interesting discussion topic. For example what if Lynn Minmay had been the one who'd stumbled into the cockpit of that VF-1D on the day of the Macross launch? And Hikaru Ichijo was the hopeful singer?

Although I don't think we could really do this for Macross 7...

Anyway, I'll go first.

If we just go with straight Minmay, as she was presented in the TV show/movie, she obviously doesn't have any native piloting skill so I think she'd actually do quite poorly at first. But I think Minmay had a drive in her and that could quite possibly help her to get better, along with a lot of instruction from Sempai Fokker.

Plus Max and Kakizaki would be constantly trying to get into her flight suit.

As for Hikaru... I honestly am not sure. He's a bishonen, so he's got the looks down but what kinda 80s music would be his schtick? He's a little anarchist at the beginning of the show but... I don't know, someone wanna throw me a bone here?

Anyway, have fun and try not to go too crazy.

I feel like the only one of these that could actually work is Macross Frontier. But I also think you could gender swap every single character in Frontier and the show would still work perfectly fine.

Also changing the reality where Roy dies eating a crappy salad and thus it's him laying waste to all Zentraedi in the sky. With Roy back in the saddle for the rest of the series combat deaths are lowered significantly however Minmay's former Bridge Bunnies lose two members to violent parking accidents while docking their valks.

Switchero' you say? allow me.... this will be long, but will have a big point.

Hikaru is delayed and arrives late to the SDF-1 launch ceremony. The Angelbird presentation goes as planed, Roy content gets to flirt with Minmay and impresses her by showing and offering her a ride in the VF-1D trainer, the Zentradi attack and Roy launches in Skull 1, Misa yells at Minmay to take off, she does and immediately crashes at Studio Nue, somehow her bratty little cousin finds her and yells at her to come out, she start pulling levers and turns the VF-1 into battroid until Roy comes and saves her.

They go into the SDF-1 that's heading into space, Misa yells at Roy for carrying a civilian, Minmay gets mad at the old lady complaining to the man who saved her. Claudia only listens.

Roy finds his old pal Hikaru among the civilians saved as refugees. Minmay shares her singing dream to Roy and he convinces her that if she joins the military they will sponsor her singing career. While Roy and Minmay train, Claudia grows increasingly jealous and shares her pain with Roy's friend Hikaru.

Minmai becomes a pilot but a bad one and is always being saved by Roy as Claudia's jealousy grows, Max and Kakizaki join the military and are assign to Skull squadron. Due to Minmay's incompetence Kakizaki is killed during the Daedalous attack. Roy advices Minmay to drop out of service and tells her he enrolled her into Miss Macross and that could help her singing career. During the Mars mission Misa dies in Riber's room after overloading the reactor to save the SDF-1, Claudia is torn by the loss of her friend but Roy is unavailable for comfort since he's helping Minmay getting discharged and into Miss Macross, Claudia finds comfort in Hikaru's arms again.

Claudia is happy Minmay is finally out of the picture but wishes to see more of Hikaru since she's fixated in him now, he entices him to join the military, he goes under Max's command. During the Miss Macross contest Max destroys the bugeye and kills Rori, Konda and Warera. Minmay wins Miss Macross, Roy is overjoyed, Claudia is furious.

After Quanzin destroys the antenna, Claudia is sent on the catseye, Roy, Max and Hikaru are escorting, Roy's growing suspicions on Claudia and Hikaru gets them distracted while they argue and they get captured. Roy is injured while fighting Bretai, Claudia and Hikaru kiss to try and scape and finally do so thanks to Max. The SDF-1 arrives to Earth, Minmay is a big star and Claudia pulls strings to finally get her off the ship.

Minmay returns to the SDF-1 with Kaifun, Claudia and Roy relationship improves after nursing him from his injuries and Minmay attention on Kaifun now. Meanwhile turns out that Quanzin was micronized as a spy but he does not get culture shock, after seeing Kun Fu Dandy and informing Breetai, he's commanded to assassinate Kaifun, he does swiftly. Minmay's loss draws Roy close again. Claudia seeks shelter in Hikaru who she never stop thinking about after that kiss.

Miria decided to find the ace Quamzin told her about, the night before the attack Roy got drunk and stayed with Minmay, he overslept and could not scramble so Hikaru commands the defense and is heavily wounded and left bedridden. Miria infiltrates to try and find Max. The SDF-1 gets send out into space. Miria finds Quanzim and elaborated a plan to kill Max, they find out Roy, Max, Minmay and Claudia are visiting Hikaru in the hospital and decided this is the best time to attack; when they burst in they find Minmay singing to everyone at Hikaru's bedside, Miria and Quanzim get cultured shocked. They later confess they are spies and peace talk begin.

Before the Zentradi attack on Earth, Hikaru dies of his injuries, despite his suspicions about Hikaru and Claudia, Roy mourns heavily the loss of his friend, Minmay is empathetic and sings for Roy during the attack to calm him down. Claudia's sadness of the loss of Hikaru causes her to mistakenly broadcasts Minmays song on all channels and culture shock Bodolzas fleet. Earth is destroyed and the SDF-1 survives.

Laplamiz does not adapt to Earth life and begin to gather disgruntled Zentradi, Claudia and Roy are together but Minmay still lingers around as a star. At christmas Roy meets up with Minmay but gets drunk and they spend the night while Claudia is on duty, Roy realizes war is the cause for his alcoholism and the loss of all his friends, he decides to quit the military life, Claudia and stay with Minmay who makes him happy. When Laplamiz does her final attack on the SDF-1, Max and Miria save the day.

Claudia Max and Miria are assign command of Megaroad-01. Roy and Minmay get married and stay on Earth.

In Eden Isamu and Guld decide "Bro's before hoes" and ditch that attention seeking whore mess of a women called Myung in high school and live a happy succesful military live and are both assigned into project Supernova due to their great flying skills. Myung creates Sharon apple and attempt to hypnotize and control UN Spacy since she needs the attention, Isamu and Guld engage and destroy the X-9 and later save the day together. Myung is committed to a mental hospital.

Due to being a war hero, an old veteran Roy is elected president of Macross 7 with his wife Minmay and Guld commanding Battle 7. They find the Varuata. Since Guld and Roy are commanding Macross 7 and not Max, the VF-19 Kai is never constructed and Basara never given any attention, Basara is found stupidly dead of starvation in front of a mountain.

Roy finds out but approves and support the corrupted officer dude from Macross 7 Trash thing to garner spiritia energy from emotions, this combined with Minmay's super duper strong anima spiritia and the later assistance of the Megaroad-01 get the Varuata defeated. Gamlin meets Mylene when the Megaroad-01 comes to assist and get hitched, the flower girl happily gives a gracious Minmay the flowers at Gamlin and Mylene wedding.

I wrote all this to get rid of Macross greatest sin Basara and the 19 Kai.

Valkyrie Addict, I thought you were going to pull a Brokeback Airforce on Macross Plus:P. For Macross Frontier, Sheryl would have to be a cybernetic augmented pilot. Athough, the problem with Ranka is that she's still a minor and Ozma would be against her joining either SMS or NUNS. Alto could pull a Lancer/Yellow Dancer though.
