505thAirborne Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 (edited) Hey guys, this is one those many projects I've been working on for awhile now, Next to the Macross Plus flight suits the style from Mac Zero is my other favorite. What you see so far is a genuine pair of USA made coveralls & G-Suit ( Gentex & Nomex), Getting a proper Zero helmet made is going to be very expensive, so for now my options are to display this suit as a Pilot with the UN SPACY with the new uniform yet still with an older style helmet piloting a Tomcat or a Zero Pilot with the newer issue SDF TV style helmet. Yes those are Football shoulder pads, they are the ideal base for the Shoulder boards, neck pads and straps to be mounted onto. The Black & Yellow boards you see are not the final product and the outer body once padded will be covered in a grey fabric and will look much more like Roy & Shins uniforms. If I can find a good Skull squadron & US SPACY Patch I'll definitely add those on too. Got a ways to go but I'm happy with it so far! Edited July 8, 2013 by 505thAirborne Quote
frothymug Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I do like the flightsuits from Zero, too. Nice job! Quote
Falconkpd Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Looks awesome! I love the helmets. I did a Macross Zero flight suit a while back, but we couldn't afford G-suits. Where did you get Roy's helmet?Pic related, it's my friend as Shin. Oops, forgot to add the picture. Quote
Mr March Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Seriously cool. I'm very impressed with the flight helmet. Btw, an excellent choice to go with Roy's Quote
505thAirborne Posted July 10, 2013 Author Posted July 10, 2013 Thanks everyone, been wanting to do this for a really long time. Roy's helmet needs alot of up-grades to be deemed really detailed, I bought from a seller either on Evil bay or MW, can't remember, I'd like to see if I can incorporate some of my Original HGU Helmet into Roy's. like the O2 mask, Macross meets reality sort of thing. @Falconkpd, I feel you with the G-suits they are very expensive and thats for small sizes, I got lucky and found this Large size really cheap but large in Navy G-suits still means a really skinny waist so I had to make some alterations to it, fits like a glove now. Once I finally have some free time and spare $$$ I'll post some more updates on this project. Quote
Shaorin Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 where does one get an older 70's/80's era USN/USAF flight helmet/o2 mask like that? how much they generally run? Quote
505thAirborne Posted July 14, 2013 Author Posted July 14, 2013 I bought the HGU helmet off ebay about 8 years ago for $35.00 because someone listed it as a Broken Motorcycle helmet... didn't know what they were selling and it needed a lot of work. These go for about $125-200.00+ depends on condition overall. The MBU-5 O2 mask, again expensive... a complete Rig can run $300.00+. If your lucky you can get used parts al a carte cheaper. MBU 12/14 masks are $300.00 easy. Flight helmets are a fun hobby but damn their expensive. Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 8, 2013 Author Posted October 8, 2013 Hey Falcon, a little here & a little there. I have the mil-spec parts for the upper body armor/vest figured out, just need some free time to properly assemble it. Got the Nomex gloves and eventually the correct boots. Getting the right materials for the shoulders boards is almost done. The helmet is still the biggest issue. Though I'd prefer to use Roy's TV helmet it still needs some major work, the pictures I posted make it look cool, up close you can see its not the best.... The visor housing needs to be replaced, its very uneven. Keep ya all posted, as one of the members who posted a Youtube video from the Con said "We need more Pilots!" I couldn't agree more. Quote
CoreyD Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I have some extra bates flight boots, what size are your feet? Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 10, 2013 Author Posted October 10, 2013 Hey Corey, good ole size 12's! I might have some free time this weekend to work on the body/vest portion. Quote
Falconkpd Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Sweet! I just got my mitts on a G-suit and I'm bidding on a US Navy MA-2 Torso harness. I'm also going to get a set of football pads to mod like you did. Hopefully this'll work out. Quote

Falconkpd Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 Outstanding!! I'll keeping an eye on your progress as well. Post your pics here if you like. Gladly, once I get home from college for a weekend, that is! XD I also plan on redoing the helmets. I'd like to do a full face mask design and I even managed to get my hands on some clear gas mask faceplates that are PERFECT for a "space helmet" design By the way, 505th, pilots normally wear regular black GI boots. These are jungle boots (which ironically are banned from pilot use for some reason), which as long as you keep the G-suit bloused over the anklets, should work. Not too expensive, either! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mens-Boots-Jungle-GI-Type-Black-Tactical-Combat-Military-Work-Shoes-Sizes-6-13-/251334215999 Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 13, 2013 Author Posted October 13, 2013 A little bit of an update, testing out some different fabrics and padding for the body armor/chest portion. Clearly the old cardboard shoulder boards will be 86'ed. I have a few ideas for the helmet. Again shes rough as is, my thought is to possibly convert it into a 50/50 TV series meets Mac Zero version. Full visor and non open-faced flight helmet. More to come! Quote
Falconkpd Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) Well come on, let's see you wearing it I just scored a US navy ejection harness by the way. I'll be incorporating that into my design for sure. Edited October 14, 2013 by Falconkpd Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 I have a 6ft mannequin I use for my WWII Helmet business, he'll be trading out his M42 jump uniform for this flight suit soon enough.Definitely once I finish adding the harness straps. Quote

I reenact regular infantry, so I normally have to just stick with wools instead of fancy-shmancy cotton jump uniforms, but hey... I'm the shmuck on the left Edited October 15, 2013 by Falconkpd Quote

Falconkpd Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 You know, you could keep the TV helmet and say you are an F203 / F/A-20 pilot... Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 17, 2013 Author Posted October 17, 2013 Welcome aboard Jetspectacular! Nice to see someone doing Infantry vs. ABN all the time and the 83rd Ohio Div. no less, nice! Well and again I'll post some pics soon, though its a rough design I figured out the body Armor/vest and shoulders and how the straps will work, Yaaaa!! When thats all done, Flight helmet time. Quote

505thAirborne Posted October 22, 2013 Author Posted October 22, 2013 (edited) Looking mighty damn good there Falcon! Getting closer with my rig, Guy on ebay sold me the wrong size Nomex gloves.... new ones on the way. I have all my Mil-spec parts but used spare parts first on this mock-up. Super easy to get on & off, and once I have the military grade parts on here it will secure and super snug! The inflates around my neck were to easy to make, covering with fabric will be another. I used both my helmets, Roy & Shin, Enjoy!! P.S. where did yo get your patches from? Edited October 22, 2013 by 505thAirborne Quote
Falconkpd Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Looking awesome! What you could do for the (for a lack of a better term) crotch harness...part (?), maybe wear a pistol belt over it to keep it more secured and add a a bit of a complex look to the harness system. I can't wait to see the final product.By the way, this is the ebay auction that sells the patches http://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-Robotech-Embroidered-Patches-Roy-Focker-Skull-Squadron-Valkyrie-Rick-Hunter-/171150739472?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item27d9610810 Quote
Falconkpd Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 One more thing! Instead of making a fabric cover for the life preserver, you can use this to cover it and look even more legit!http://www.ebay.com/itm/LPU-9-P-Pilot-Life-Preserver-Cover-Container-NEW-Fighter-Pilot-USAF-US-NAVY-/171038529677?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d2b0d88d Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 22, 2013 Author Posted October 22, 2013 Outstanding Falcon!! I'll definitely get one of those, thanks for the link! Quote
