NEW ANIMATED SERIES STAR WARS REBELS COMING FALL 2014

May 20, 2013

Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we're thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD's viewers."

"I couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe," said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. "I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars."

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV -- an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date. More information about this developing project will be found on StarWars.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/starwarsrebels.

And because title, I have to throw in the obligatory clip (Sorry, cleanest copy I could find in a hurry on YT).

Sounds interesting. I hope Disney put in place an over-arching continuity for the new films and the cartoon to live in. It would be nice not to have the movies invalidate everything in the toon.

Sounds like a good era to explore too. Might be able to tell the story of what happened to some of the remaining Jedi like Asoka too, as well as creating some new enemies for the the new trilogy.

You mean likee what the prequels did to everything else?

I want my X-wing/Rogue Squadron animated series

Why make it animated? It's the perfect concept for a live action television series.

Two possible reasons, one good and one bad.

Bad - they plan on a kiddie show.

Good - It would be way too expensive to do as live action.

They always make the argument it's "too expensive" but I don't buy that argument. If only for the fact it's fricking Star Wars. Just make it good and you WILL have constant revenue.

THIS. And actually, I'd much prefer a series about Wraith Squadron, just because the characters are so entertaining, and more well rounded compared with the Stackpole books. Not to say I wouldn't like to see the Isaard books too, but I want to see "Yub yub, Commander" in motion. :p

Also, it had better look as good, or better than this.

I want to say, the closer to an anime series this gets, the better, but mostly I'm just concerned about making the universe kid-friendly. The time while the Rebels were base-hopping to stay ahead of the empire was not a happy time.

There is a reason why there have been so few "space fighters" sci fi shows, and budget is that reason. (and the second, third, and fourth reasons too).

Lol that video looks entirely like an imperial propaganda reel. But yes, Wraith Squadron please!

2 questions: Is this really the long in development live action series converted to animation (because Lucasfilm has finally realized they can't make a tv show with a movie budget)?

Is the animation going to be 2D or CGI?

So few and not possible are two different things.

OK you win, live action shows with lots of space battles are economically feasable. Studios have been shoveling out Cop shows, Doctor shows, Lawyer Shows, Reality TV shows, etc... just to spite us.

Looks promising so far. Ship is reminiscent of the Falcon & Ebon Hawk, while having its own identity.

. . . . which knowing Hasbro will never be released on time (if ever), will lack adequate articulation, and will be released YEARS after a season has been aired (i.e., a cool character from Season 1 will finally be made into figure form around the time Season 5 rolls around).

I really wished they could have squeezed a few more eps out of Clone Wars (an abridged Season 6?) just to wrap up a few of the storylines.

Disney is now involved, merchandise WILL be released in a timely manner. Some people actually think Disney is an animation company, sheer madness that...

Gonna be good,if its in the same tone as Clone Wars darker seasons then this will be a great series.

Agreed...good thing here is no time wasting on politics...the Imperial Senate indeed. ;)
