Blazerwing Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Hello, I'm new to this forum, I've spent the last couple of days going through a lot of posts in this section to find infi and to make sure I'm not reposting anything that already is already up. During my search I ran across a VF-0 1/32 scale scratch build, that's along the lines of what I'm trying to do but larger (possably 4' long from nose to feet). Once upon a time when I was much younger I made a 3.5' VF-4 out of styrofoam and balsa, I had both nacelles and the fuse finished but sadly it was destroyed before I could finish it. Fast forward 20 years I'd like to give it another go, now my question is where can I find any really good 3 view scale drawings? I have a few of each but I need more, especially top and side front views. Also any tips on fleshing out the shape would be appreciated, I plan on using primarily 6mm depron foam with a few styrene bits thrown in. The VF-4 I did was all freehand cutting, carving, and sanding. I'd like to be more accurate this time around. Quote
jenius Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 There's a scratch build 1/24 scale VF-1 that had a build-up on this site. Tracking it down and getting in touch with that member might be a great start. Quote
EXO Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 For this project, I'd definitely get the book Variable Master File VF-0 Phoenix. I don't remember it having a head on view, but it has top, bottom, left and right views along with cutaways and other part detail you'll ever need to have an accurate fighter model. http://www.hlj.com/product/SOF36808/Sci you can also find it in Japanese book stores or other on-line import places. as far as making the model itself, are you going to add filler primer on the foam? If so I'd say invest on a couple of sanding blocks and a lot of sanding sticks to get the smoothest surface. And a god panel line scriber would also work. Also check out mech techs Giant Daedalus thread for some tips. It's not a VF but it's very informative for a build that size. http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=18403 Quote
Blazerwing Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 Thanks, I checked out those books. I'll be ordering them this weekend! There was another I found to that might be ad use, the Variable Fighter Modeling File IIRC. I must have that as well. Quote
Chronocidal Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 In a pinch, you can also find scans of the instructions for the Hasegawa kits online. You won't get front views, but you'll get top, bottom, and side. I usually use their instructions for 3D modeling projects, because their instructions seem to be generated directly off of the computer drawings from their molds, and always match up perfectly with each other. Blazerwing Posted April 28, 2013 Author Posted April 28, 2013 Thanks for the tip, I just checked out some of the scans. There were even some pictures of the parts in the racks, I think I'll try printing some of them out and taking some measurements and see if I can enlarge them to the scale I need. If it works maybe I can use them to make patterns for some of the parts like the wings and vertical stabs. Quote
Blazerwing Posted April 28, 2013 Author Posted April 28, 2013 I could still use some tips on forming the other parts, more specifically the nose section, leg nacelles and the main body. There are no cross section images to make forms off of. Quote
Reïvaj Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Maybe you should get a Hasegawa kit and simply upscale the parts. Quote
Blazerwing Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 I thought about that, then it would just be a matter of taking measurements and doing the math Quote
Chronocidal Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 Getting a physical model to scale up is probably your best bet. With something in hand, you could cut your own cross-sections out of card-stock by hand, and scale them up to whatever size you need. Quote
Blazerwing Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 Well, I received my VF-0 and VF-1 master files earler this week and I should be getting my 1/48 Hesagawa VF-1S in a few days then its a weekend of measurements and scaling conversions. Quote
