Godzilla-WB/Legendary production, on DVD/Blu-ray Sept. 16, 2014

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today the final principal cast for the upcoming tentpole [/size]Godzilla. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche are starring in the film, with David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston.[/size]

The companies also announced that principal photography began today on location in Vancouver.[/size]

Gareth Edwards is directing the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont and Dave Callaham. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher are serving as executive producers alongside Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.[/size]

A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, [/size]Godzilla will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. Legendary Pictures is a division of Legendary Entertainment.[/size]

Slated to open on May 16, 2014, the film is expected to be presented in 3D.[/size]

I for one am excited to see the Big G make a return to the screen. I have hope this will erase the travesty committed in the 1998 movie.

I've always had a spot in my heart for Gojira, it was the coolest part of Sunday's growing up, watching Monster Island flicks with a follow up of Kung-fu. Both I'd say probably had the worst dubbing in the history of television.

Being a big Godzilla fan myself, I counted down the days until the release for the 1998 version. Which was a huge let down. So I'm not as excited this time.

Hopefully I'm pleasantly surprised. But if I see one pile of fish....

Just to be nitpicky, only 2 out of 28 Godzilla movies were made in the 80s. Percentage-wise, "most" of them were made in the 60s, with 8 of 28.

I choose to be cautiously optimistic, even though I wasn't hugely fond of Gareth's Monsters, because more Godzilla is always good (I even tolerate the 1998 version... mostly... kinda.... *shudder*).

but if this is the direction they want to go I'm willing to be optimistic about this

Right now I'm more interested in what other kaiju are going to show up for him to fight.

TBH, I think My interest would be a lot more peaked if they were talking about doing something with Mothra or Gamera. Those two have all of my love as far as Kaiju go.

my brother, Doug, was a rather prolithic fanfic writer, had always wanted to... make a career of it. I think he got 1 story published, long ago. there is other stuff but these stories are by far the best IMHO for his work. (thought he did do a humorous one on a Kaiju attack on Cleveland, where a unseen version of G fights Bobalina, a rather unsavery homage to a woman he worked with at one point in his life. very un PC comments when discussed LOL...)

Maybe I liked the 1998 version because I never really watched any of the old ones. Sure seeing 2 giant monsters duke it out is awesome as a kid but as an adult, it would be cheesy. I mean, just look at all the monster vs monster B movies on the SyFi channel. Terrible CG and terrible acting. Maybe that's why the 1998 version went with a more realistic approach.

My oldest loves Godzilla movies, kind of like I did at that age, but even he hates the 1998 version, my wife and I tried to watch that movie this weekend and it was so painful. Did any of the leads' careers survive that movie? Also it made my wife and I debate Roland Emmrich, and how his movies have gotten worse and worse the more money they give him for his movies, heck I used to love his early direct to video shlock.

(Just making sure there was no Japanese movie the same year) I NEVER considered that a real Godzilla movie - and I even liked the Godzilla 85 movie with the flying Norelco razor ship. Same here - remember that feeling vividly. Same with Independence Day, my buddy actually had to hold me in my chair.

I know this is a Godzilla thread, and I am looking forward to it - but someone mentioned Cloverfield. I was really shocked by how much I liked that one. Does anyone know of sequel talk for that?

Stoopid scene (among many, well the whole movie) of '98: The helicopters losing track of godzilla. Just fly up a little bit, or better yet: track the damn thing by satellite!

Same goes for Pacific Rim. At least they mentioned helicopter spotters, but they weren't much good.

Godzilla 98 isn't a bad monster film, but it is a bad Godzilla film. Just do what the Japanese did and establish that it was stupid gaijin from America that mistook this monster for Godzilla. The movie isn't so bad after that.

I too grew up on Saturday morning Godzilla and kung-fu movies. In hindsight: yes, many of the 60's vintage Gojira flicks were pretty awful--but in a campy, what kid wouldn't love it sort of way.

If it ain't from Toho Studios, it ain't Godzilla. Godda**it.

That's the millenium goji suit used from Godzilla 2000 up to Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S. after that it was replaced by a new suit in Godzilla Final Wars that was based on a grown up Godzilla Junior from Godzilla vs Destroyah

^Plus a rough draft early on was to have said Junior as the titular Goji. That is also why FW had the 100 meter height scale instead of the regular 50 meter one.
