mechaninac Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Ha! Chirico dognapped Ein an dressed him up for Holloween... Quote
DarrinG Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Nobody's darling but the CM's is my next Votoms review up on anymoon: These reviews are outstanding. Looking forward to more. Heard a rumor you might have a Yamato Scopedog that NONE of us have seen in detail before. Post some pics! Quote
Hoptimus Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Is there a reason Revoltech does not make Scopedogs? It would be so fun... Quote
jenius Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Kaiyodo did make some pre revoltech dogs... they may be the worst toys I've ever handled. Quote
Hoptimus Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Seems like Votoms is dying down again. HLJ hardly has anything in stock. Yamato is done and the DMZ line is done. Quote
LOW_ALT Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 The 35Max line is still the best to me, the Yammy and DMZ left a lot to be desired... Quote
DarrinG Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I would like to handle a 35Max to see what they're like, but the giant domes bother me... Quote
jenius Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 And very soon has arrived! Sorry DarrinG, the Yamato reviews are going to have to wait a while, I'm working on a big Macross review so I don't have enough time to dedicate to a toy as complex as the Yamato Scopedogs right now. So, I'll probably take on something a bit similar next like the joint model, Seven 1/48, dual model, or even the 1/60 offering. In the meantime, the 35Max review is up! Quote
LOW_ALT Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Harsh review, but understandable. I'm torn as to whether or not I can agree with your DMZ review being as high as it was, especially looking at the 35max review. The DMZ just seemed really over-hyped to me. They had a terrible mold (razor sharp edges on the arms, feet way too big, curious proportions), strange joints, press-on arms, hands that fall apart, top heavy, amateur "weathering" details, etc. Credit for it's success, in my opinion, was simply due to the fact that it had all the gimmicks. Enough gimmicks and paint details to draw attention away from all the flaws. I was instantly disappointed when I got mine, it just felt so cheap and phoned-in. It's too bad Yamato didn't make a smaller scale line. Their 1/12 had nicely detailed molds and proportions but the size, joints, and gimmicky panels coupled with horrid build quality ensured a recipe for disaster. Quote
DarrinG Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I had not heard before those types of comments on the DMZs. Heard they were the 'Schniz' except for price. For me, the microman pilot figures were unacceptable so I went with a few of the 1/12s. Like what you stated about them - their size + build quality = disaster. At best it makes them unruly to handle. At worst you want to shoot yourself if another piece pops off, or it simply collapses under its own weight. The review on the 35Max does nothing to make me want them. They look rubbery with heads that are FAR to big. No one noticed this at Max Factory before the roll out? Legs looks spindly, weathering not so good in the photos either. Bring on the Yamato reviews I cry - with all the goodness and badness they are... Quote
Hoptimus Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I should have bought some of the Bandai 1/20 Play Model kits. Those things are scarce now. Weird. Quote
LOW_ALT Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 There used to be an ebay seller that sold 1/20's painted and weathered for a decent price. Haven't seen him in a while though. Quote
jenius Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 (edited) I think calling the DMZ mold 'terrible' is pretty harsh. I didn't experience any razor sharpness (certainly nothing compared to the wings of Yamato's VF-19 toys). The feet are a little too wide while the armor plate above them is a little too thin. The arms also have a couple minor details which don't jive with the line art but otherwise the mold is very good. I would say that the Yamato mold is better in terms of proportions though. Then Takara went and painted on just about every detail you could want while just about every other Votoms toy maker cheaped it out and gave us cheap stickers. There's definitely room for improvement on the DMZs though. I think Yamato made a terrible mistake when they went 1/12 instead of 1/15 scale (but maybe Takara's license included a range of scales to protect their DMZ line). Yamato made an even worse mistake when they didn't bother painting on nearly any detail at all. Who buys that expensive and huge of a toy and doesn't expect it to make an eye-popping display piece? jenius Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 My Yamato Scopedog review is up! Sample pic: Quote
DarrinG Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Nice Yamato 1/12 Scope Dog review, as always Jenius. Think you said it best in these 2 sentences: "The proportions are fantastic, probably the best Scopedog sculpt to date." AND "Once something this big and heavy gets loose it becomes an absolute nightmare to handle and the fun factor goes flying out the window." SUPER impressive shelf piece, ZERO fun to handle. The Chirico pilot figure is what makes the line shine, so looking forward to future coverage of that... Quote
Hoptimus Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Yeah I love my 1/12 but it is posed with the rifle and just sits there. Quote
DarrinG Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 A 1/12 Brutishdog just went on evilBay for (only) $200, which is far better than the $800 and $900 listings seen recently. Its a model that the DMZs never got to... Quote
Major Tom Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 I wouldn't mind having this rare Volk's 1/8 Scopedog with Chirico either http://masterfileblog.jp/news/2012/12/20/2672.html Quote
DarrinG Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 The Volks 1/8 is on my dream list... for retirement years most likely. You need about $1,500 to consider it though. Wonder what all the future grand kids will think someday when grandad is building giant death mecha instead of model train sets.... Quote
jenius Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 All these people are like "OOh, check out my VF-4 review." Yeah, VF-4 reviews are so YESTERDAY'S news. Where are their reviews for 30 year old toys? Yeah, I'm kickin' it old school: Quote
DarrinG Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Excellent OLD SCHOOL review Jenius! And for anyone wanting to see the series, here is a great deal on the metal box DVD set: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Anime-Votoms-Armored-Trooper-8-DVD-Tin-Box-Lot-Collection-Set-No-Bonus-Disc-/110997480300?pt=US_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray&hash=item19d7f7236c Quote
brenttoyou Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 scored a brutishdog+fyana bundle pack for 270 shipped! now the wait begins. Quote
DarrinG Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 NICE! You will enjoy these. Hope you detail up the Brutish. I have not yet but I really enjoy seeing that done. The Fyana figure is one of the nicest I have ever seen, hence the price often listed for her. Post some pics when you get them... Quote
jenius Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I think I just purchased a Yamato 1/12 Scopedog that was limited to only 100 pieces. I believe it was a lottery prize similar to the 1/48 Hikaru VF-1S Weathering Edition. Unfortunately... it's also one of the most boring looking Scopedogs you'd ever see. I think I also own the black Scopedog that was the original DVD purchase so that means I own the rarest Yamato Votoms toys... can't wait to get them on my site but it won't be any time soon. Quote
DarrinG Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Here is the 'black' or Investigation Unit 1/12 Scopedog, and the letter it comes with. I want one of these! Hard to find as you point out... Quote
connor99 Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 That one does look good! It's too bad YAMATO's done making the dogs in the 1/12 scale 'coz it would've been nice to get one of these: Quote
jenius Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I've been trying to buy that toy for a while (Rane 35Max Assault Version) but it was the last one they made and it's really hard to come by. I also purchased a CMs Rane Assault Custom but the seller sent me the standard version instead so I had to return it Quote
DarrinG Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 A little bundle of joy arrived today... Our first 1/48th Actic Gear. He comes with a lot of tampo and a shocking amount of detail and accessories. Not too much trouble so far, nothing a little clear nail polish to 'hold fast his bits and pieces' couldn't fix... Quote
DarrinG Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I had no idea this was a $500 toy! Imagine the surprise of someone who buys this auction not understanding how big a 1/48th Scopedog really is. http://www.ebay.com/itm/181076348666?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Quote
jenius Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Minor correction, that is an AGN-03 which is supposedly a slightly upgraded version of the toy you have, an AG-XX01. Quote
jenius Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Went tiny scale for my next Votoms review: Quote
