easnoddy Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Those are terrible. You're better off getting the originals Harmony Gold and Matchbox made in the 80's. In these days of high-quality action figures, those are an embarrassment. I guarantee they will cost $15. Quote

Much, much, worse. Quote

There's no need for hyperbole. They're bad, but the old Matchbox figures were horrible even for 80s figures. Quote
GabrielV Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 They should be $10 or less. No argument there. Quote

They're bad, but the old Matchbox figures were horrible even for 80s figures. I'd argue that by comparison to the technology of the time, the shoulder joint on these looks worse than the old Matchbox figures (even with the metal rivet). Even Milia has the broad shoulders of a man. I collect Marvel Legends figs also and these look terrible by comparison. Regardless, the head sculpts are REALLY bad, especially for the males. Its like they referenced some custom Robotech art rather than the actual Macross pictures they put on the cards. Quote
jvmacross Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Its like they referenced some custom Robotech art rather than the actual Macross pictures they put on the cards. The art on the cards is custom "Robotech" art.... It is the same "art" that was originally created for the Toynami "masterpiece" collection of 1/55 VF-1's. Quote
GabrielV Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 We need a Minmei figure to rival "Sader". C'mon Toynami. Make it happen! jvmacross, I don't have the full line of those like you, and I have mixed feelings about those figures, but damn those boxes look kickass all in a row like that. Quote
Lonely Soldier Boy Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Ugh! Rick looks like a member of One Direction. I'd try a Roy figure, if Toynami ever releases these, but to be honest, I'm secretly wishing Figuarts would take a swing at Macross characters. Quote

easnoddy Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I think we all need to be reminded just how horrifying those old matchbox toys actually were (NSFW) KILLLL......MEeee.... Ok, yeah, the head sculpts and painting were atrocious. The rest looks pretty standard from what I remember of GI Joe figs of the time. Quote
jvmacross Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Did this get posted? Had not seen it before.... Quote
JetJockey Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Have any of you seen those horrible "retro" 3.75 figures that some company makes? They've licensed just about everything: Back to the Future, Alien, Star Trek, etc, etc. The figures are done in the old late 70s early 80s Kenner Star Wars style. All of the figures are effectively the same with different paint jobs. They're disproportionate with really long torsos and short legs. They look terrible even compared to battered original Star Wars figures. The market for those Toynami figures is the same as for the retro figures I mention. They're for older people who really aren't into expensive retro-collectibles but still have an appetite for goodies related to properties from the olden days. And, to be fair, the Toynami figures look higher quality than the retro figs I mention. I've seen those and was shocked at the quality. I think people might buy them for the card artwork. Because they aren't figures that I can see anyone using for display. Or maybe they are very limited and people think they will sell in a few years for good money. I first heard about those figures on a poster / print forum I think where people are always flipping posters. Ok, yeah, the head sculpts and painting were atrocious. The rest looks pretty standard from what I remember of GI Joe figs of the time. GI Joe figures were a lot better. I think GI Joe was the top figure in that size. And of course the card artwork was better too. Quote
sh9000 Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 (edited) Maybe not GI Joe figures in the 80's but the Matchbox Robotech figures remind me of Mego's 3.75" Bo and Duke from the 80's so they were ok for their time. Edited March 7, 2016 by sh9000 Quote
derex3592 Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 (edited) Wow! As a child of the 80s I never even saw those Dukes of Hazzard figures before, very cool. As far as the Robotech characters yes they are very bad however they were and still are quite rare in some cases. I have a few of them from back then. I display them with my old 80's toys that survived. Edited March 7, 2016 by derex3592 Quote

vlenhoff Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 (edited) I think the CMS are some of the best Macross figures for the price and scale. I am practicing with the mini photo studio i built. Pardon the focus, this is my second photoshoot test. BTW this first picture is not a CMS. She is larger, and I bought it from a member here many, many years ago. Can anyone tell me what line is she from? Or is it a custom? Edited March 8, 2016 by vlenhoff Quote
vlenhoff Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 (edited) I used a sketch effect on some of the pictures above. Edited March 9, 2016 by vlenhoff Quote

Or is it a custom? That Minmay figure is a custom that was commissioned by and sold through the now-defunct Twin Moons Anime web shop, whose owner is a member here. Haven't seen him in a long time though, nor do I know who handled the production of the figure. Tamim is a great guy. I have one of these Minmay figures, myself. Very glad I had a chance to get one. vlenhoff Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Ha, thanks for the info Drag! I do like her too. Yes, Kelsain, i need to paint her uniform purple, but for now, she will do. Quote
