Oh, and I haven't posted in any non-project threads in ages. Inspirational stuff all around. Since it's been so long and this is "Everything Photography" I thought I'd share my brief photographic journey. I started with a point and shoot (Canon A40) back in the late '90s. Have been a Canon person ever since. I think it comes down purely to what I've always used and what I'm used to. From the point and shoot, I eventually got into DSLRs with a second hand 300D, which led to a 500D (after a tripod incident and my 2 year old son, at the time). I then got a too good to pass up deal on a 40D and liked the size, weight, control, and feel of it so much, I sold off my 500D and the 40D and bought a 7D. Several lenses and thousands of photos later, I'm just starting to figure out how to make the occasional photo that actually looks OK. I've only had the 7D for a couple of months and most of my shots so far have been of people, so trying to find something worth sharing has been tricky. Here goes: IMG_0375 by MickyG_Photos, on Flickr Right, so I have no idea how you guys are embedding the photo into your posts. I tried each link option from the drop down box but none of them previewed correctly. Any tips for a Flickr noob? Never mind, figured it out! By the way, here's my setup: Canon 7D Canon 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM Canon 17-55mm EF-S f/2.8 IS USM Canon 85mm EF f/1.8 USM Canon 60mm EF-S f/2.8 USM Macro Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD SP AF The shot above is with the 17-55mm. For those of you wondering, it's a great lens. I can't fault it in any way, except that it hasn't got enough reach on the odd occasion. Like at an airshow or when I want to get really close (macro performance isn't stellar). I'll stop there and continue to be inspired by all the great photos I'm seeing. I started taking pictures of my Macross collection with a Sony Alpha A350 then quickly switched to a Canon Rebel Xsi and upgraded after a year to a 5D mk2 and aqcuired some L lenses along the way. Im Currently shooting with the Mk3 and i mainly shoot landscapes but do portraiture stuff sometimes. On 6/6/2012 at 4:57 PM, Major Focker said: just got back. Was quickly disappointed when i brought it to Angkor Wat, fine for exterior shots, terrible at handling the contrasts of light and shadow once inside. granted i was a noob then and probably could've worked it more, and indeed i fared slightly better in my subsequent jaunt through Vietnam. but still, i couldn't get over the fact that the white balance looked greenish indoors, and i never could get the blurred backgrounds/selective focus that i thought that camera would allow me. that put me off photography for a couple of years until the Olympus PEN came along. got the E-PL1 and instantly fell in love with it. all this time i was avoiding DSLRs because of the associated bulk, but when i started hitting the limitations of the PEN (focus speed/accuracy and dynamic range) i gave in and got a Nikon D7000. loved the variety of fast, constant-aperture zooms but 9 cities and a sore back later, i started bringing it less and less. i was also starting to miss the Olympus colors and art filters so i went back to a compact and the Olympus XZ-1 became my go-anywhere camera. Now with the Olympus E-M5 i get the best of both worlds, DSLR image quality with far less weight and bulk. In retrospect i can see i'm going directionally opposite to the features which lured me to my first camera: i'll take wide angle vs. zoom reach anyday, PASM controls over scene modes, and low ISO whenever possible. Actually, I was trying to focus on her! Then, I remembered that my wife was standing right next to me, so I couldn't be only taking pictures of the cute young ones. This was a good practice for me in playing with the exposure function of my new camera. Should have played with the shutter speed a bit, too. Well, practice and learn! By the way, that is me 4th one down, if no one figured it out yet. Quote

Well, practice and learn! there's always the next festival! you might be encouraged to pick up a fast lens too. you'll need it if you want to use motion-freezing shutter speed in that kind of light. On 6/12/2012 at 9:30 PM, electric indigo said: Target exercises (and testing my patience) with my compact: looks like you're patience paid off. good shots! i never could manage to sneak up on these critters had some time today to go through some of the pics i took in the last couple of weeks. i averaged about 250 shots/day and quite pleased my shot count has drastically fallen, as well as the % of crap shots (misfocused, over/under exposed, too slow shutter speed). there's still a good chunk though where i was like, "WTF was i thinking!", and of course the obligatory pic of/with gf and/or her friends. bottom line, a lot of pictures to sort through and it's really getting tedious doing it with Windows Photo Viewer. yet another reason to get Lightroom... anyway, some pics from the land of paella, tapas, and sangria!
