Shadow Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 So the PAK FA now has a name. Been designated Su-57. I was expecting Su-50 or 51 but whatever. Looking forward to the NATO callsign. Quote
mechaninac Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 'Good news, everyone!' I hereby propose Farnsworth as the NATO designation for the newly christened Su-57... Quote
seti88 Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 (edited) time for russian propaganda.... so advanced that includes photoshop stealth mode! Edited August 15, 2017 by seti88 Quote
enphily Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 oh yeah, russian propaganda. I'm russian and i hate russian propaganda:( Quote

Sildani Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 I vote for Foxfire. The other way's a web browser. Quote
Shadow Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 I'm voting for Flipper. That codename will piss the RuAF off. Quote
Sildani Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 Wonder if the Russians eagerly anticipate NATO reporting names and hope they're cool... Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 (edited) Probably won't be "Foxfire", IIRC that was the codename allocated to either the MiG-25 or MiG-31 radar. Although the Russians have their own names for their equipment (one of the best known is "Akula" - "Shark" - what NATO called the "Typhoon" class SSBN; ironically enough, NATO assigned "Akula" as the codename to a completely different class of Russian submarine) I remember reading that some Russians used the NATO codename "Fulcrum" to refer to MiG-29s. "Fenestrator"...? Edit: Oh, and "Flipper" was a codename assigned to a prototype Russian fighter from the 50s I think... Edited August 15, 2017 by F-ZeroOne Quote
Dobber Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 I always did wonder what the Soviets and later Russians called their Aircraft and such. Do they have official names like the West does for their aircraft? Chris Quote
mechaninac Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 If I'm not mistaken, the Russians liked the NATO designations Fulcrum, Flanker, and Bear so much that they actually adopted them as the semi-official names for the Mig-29, Su-27..., and Tu-95, respectively. I don't think they were as keen on some of the other code-names (Fagot, Fishbed, Foxbat, etc.) that the West have chosen for their aircraft, though. Quote
David Hingtgen Posted August 15, 2017 Author Posted August 15, 2017 Su-27 is the "crane" semi-officially, but they do use Flanker as well. I can't think of any Russian jet with an official name. Quote

Read the business insider that India, Iran and South Korea were scheduled for it Odd, it'll be South Korean SU-57 vs North Korean SU-whatever... As for the name, I propose Fricassee Rabbit (what can I say, "Rabbit Season, Duck Season" suddenly popped into my head) Quote
Shadow Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 (edited) I recall the Russian were also not particularly fond of "Firkin" for the defunct Su-47. Come on MiG. You're slacking. Where is that Mig-41? If "Flipper" is taken. I change my vote to Su-57 "Flaccid". Also looked up the Flipper and yeah, F-Zero, you're right. Ye-152. Edited August 16, 2017 by Shadow Quote

F-ZeroOne Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 For those of you trying to find a NATO codename for the SU-57 that hasn't been taken, heres a handy list - and, no, I didn't know "Firebird" was assigned to the Chinese J-10!: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NATO_reporting_names_for_fighter_aircraft Quote
Dobber Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Oh crap.....I just bought an Anigrand 1/48 MiG-31 Firefox. It looked much better than the 1/72 version. My wife is going to kill me Chris Quote
anime52k8 Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 on the subject of names, my vote is for either "Fidget" or "Flatpack" Quote
David Hingtgen Posted August 18, 2017 Author Posted August 18, 2017 First really stealthy Sukhoi? I vote for Su-57 Fader. Quote
dizman Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 "Flapjack" would be a fitting silly name or "Fenrir" for a cool name. Any ideas what those small openings below the tail fins are, just some extra intakes? Quote
Sildani Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 "Fafnir". And those openings are probably ram-air scoops, might be used for avionics cooling or to try and cool the exhaust. Quote

F-ZeroOne Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 I've got it! Considering recent debates about other newly introduced aircraft, the Su-57 will from now on be assigned the NATO codename "Flamewar". Quote

ErikElvis Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 The new Russian fighter is certainly not unattractive. Quote
mechaninac Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 Su-57 Fizzle, or Flutter, or Fuzzy, or Fluster, or... The amount of comically unflattering names are almost endless. Quote
Dobber Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 With how far apart the engines are and how wide it looks, how about the Spread Eagle. Chris Quote
mechaninac Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 1 hour ago, Dobber said: With how far apart the engines are and how wide it looks, how about the Spread Eagle. Chris ... but the NATO convention is to have adversary forces' fighters' names start with "F", bombers with "B", etc. So, how about F'n Spread Eagle?... Quote
