I've seen those on eBay before. Personally, I think they look really crappy. They're missing engraved panel lines, ridges, and other basic details. Honestly, it looks like someone threw Bandai's and Yamato's small gashapons into a 3D scanner and then printed out large versions of them in wood. Considering that the going rate for them is around $70 and higher on Ebay, I'd say it's a ripoff at best. At worst, it's possible piracy.

I've seen some of these before that were horrible compared to the standards that we're used to. I think the manufacturers should stick to conventional aircraft. These artist have fallen victim to my friend and yours - "anime magic" ;) - MT

I agree, they would be cool for your desk. HOWEVER, not at that price. I'd rather find me a toothless squirell hunter and pay him $10 and 6 pack of PBR to whittle the exact same thing.

I've never understood the allure of these things. I can't see how anyone would be happy with the lack of detail. Buy the toy and a stand and you're guaranteed to be happier.

i'm guessing that there is some sort of general perception of "Respectable Stateliness" in regards to wooden desktop aircraft models?

Wooden aircraft models can be very attractive depending on the artist. Almost always panel lines and other details are painted.

The problem with e-bay is you can't see the piece until after you purchase it.

Custom work you may not be able to return at all.

Get a chunk of balsa and have a go at it yourself. Most people given time could produce what you show in those photos.

For that price I say it's not worth it. Not really well thought out. No panel lines, not enough detail for that price. Just a nice wood model with a glossy paint job. I've seen the aircraft models at airshows and they are no where near that price. They are also better thought out with enough panel lines and details to show off proudly.

It would just be a decent piece for YOUR desk, but not mine. :p

Printed out on my HP Birch.

Found it in the woods.

Well, it's actually quite possible this is what happened. CNC subtractive printing - routing all the wood away from a block, is quite established technology. In fact the more I think about it, the more certain I am that this is what's going on here....
