Falcon Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 STRAY-YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Can't wait!!!!! But where's the VB!? Wasn't impressed by the trailer and have low expectations for the movie as a result but all these pics are starting to pique my interest i this movie again... Quote
Syngyne Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 Gipsy Danger poster: Also, someone on another forum I read saw an advanced screening. I had the opportunity to see a screening of this on Saturday. I'm not the kind of person who goes all film school on my film reviews. It's good. It's damn good. The plot is direct and not exceptionally original and that doesn't matter one bit because as Spry said, it's not trying to be something it's not. The characters are simple, but not cardboard cutouts. The mech designs rock and the kaiju are awesome to terrifying. They're also a freaking love letter to everything from Gojira to Ultraman, design-wise. The fights are solid, you get a lot of bang for your buck. I plan on seeing it again, damn straight. Del Toro was there and after the film he hung out with the crowd asking questions and seriously really listening to what folks were saying about the film. He was also nerding out hard core over giant robots and kaiju in general. One guy had a copy of the collected works of Lovecraft in his hand, Del Toro got to discussing "At the Mountains of Madness" at length witht hat guy, in Spanish. A lot of enthusiastic tone and arm waving. I got to shake his hand. (Squee!). Seriously nice guy! Quote
Gubaba Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 I'm kinda looking forward to this, but I'd rather see "At the Mountains of Madness," honestly... Quote
PetarB Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 The thing I love about these poster: they look like box cover artwork for the models. Quote
electric indigo Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 To be more specific: They look like box cover artwork for models I do not want to buy. Quote
VF5SS Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/39.html PACIFIC RIM'S TIME TO CRATE the poster XD Quote
Graham Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Gipsy Danger poster: Iron Man, that you? Graham Quote
raptormesh Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 The robot designs cannot be more uninspired. I will watch this one after a few beers, maybe. Quote
lechuck Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Sorry no offense, but please tell me that Europe (or Euro Union) is not represented by that ugly Russian looking one... I will be watching this though. Quote
azrael Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Sorry no offense, but please tell me that Europe (or Euro Union) is not represented by that ugly Russian looking one...This report from WonderCon 2013 may alleviate that concern. Although probably not by much. WonderCon '13: PACIFIC RIM Footage Description Quote
Mommar Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 (edited) I feel like a lot of people want to hate on these designs because they aren't specifically made bytheir favorite anime mech designer. I'll admit Gipsy Danger or the Chinese one don't look that great but I believe the other three are really cool looking. Actually, I find that monstrous Russian design quite awesome. There's an obvious homage to a nuclear reactor going on with that head piece and it's also a frightening, menacing hell of a top-hat. It looks like a brute and I love it. I don't care if the mecha looks great or looks like crap. I just want a good movie. And I trust del Toro. Quote
Greyryder Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Gipsy Danger is easily the weakest design in the movie. Striker Eureka and Coyote Tango booth look great. Quote
mecha2241 Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I don't care if the mecha looks great or looks like crap. I just want a good movie. And I trust del Toro. Well I have no problem saying I like the mecha designs and the story sounds pretty entertaining. Quote
PetarB Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Sorry no offense, but please tell me that Europe (or Euro Union) is not represented by that ugly Russian looking one... I will be watching this though. I'm afraid Eurozone wasn't able to afford a Jaeger: speculative stock in Cypriot banks have devalued investments.... Anyhow, this just looks better and better. I actually quite like the 'ugliness' of the Russian looking one. Most military machines are quite ugly in general - but this is part of their appeal for me, at least! Quote
renegadeleader1 Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Here's a simple explanation. Its called "Pacific" Rim not Atlantic. That's why there aren't any other nations from Europe represented aside from Russia being the exception as it actually borders the Pacific Ocean. Quote

Thank you, although I suspect that some will struggle to get their heads around that concept....... Quote
Frogze Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 I'm afraid Eurozone wasn't able to afford a Jaeger: speculative stock in Cypriot banks have devalued investments.... LOL I guess Gipsy Danger was probably made in China I'm even more looking forward to this movie now, not for the mecha designs which look random generic but for the monsters and because Del Toro movies have never failed at entertaining me so far Quote
Twoducks Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Well, I for one enjoy the designs. That you can still see some little homages to many other mechas in such a big studio movie speaks a lot of how much Del Toro has cared for it. Quote
hutch Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I'm not too keen on the aesthetic of the mecha designs, but that doesn't mean they're "bad" it just means I don't like them. Eager to see the movie. Quote

Eager to see the movie. It's simple. Giant robots onscreen that are not frikkin transformers or comic book characters? I'm there. Quote
Syngyne Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Trading cards with Jaeger stats. Go Australia! Quote
Mr March Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 LOL! That's kinda retro and cool. Poor Japan; they're probably getting hit the hardest by the Kaiju Quote
Syngyne Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Supposedly Jaegers were doing okay against the Kaiju until something changed, and they either had to change strategies, make improved Jaegers, or both. I'm guessing Japan's was one of the first. Quote
Mommar Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Ok... where's the Brazil's Jaeger? Brazil borders the Atlantic not the Pacific. Quote
slaginpit Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Where is Canada's Jager? probably has a hockey stick Quote
taksraven Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Trading cards with Jaeger stats. Go Australia! Go STRAYA!!! indeed. Of course, with the best stats and most kills, it means that Eureka Striker (Cool name if you know Australian history) is not going to survive till the end of the film. D'OH!!! Quote
Syngyne Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Ok... where's Peru's Jaeger? Supposedly there is one from Peru called Puma Real. Quote
Marzan Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) Del Toro surely ordered the production staff to include a Mexican model somewhere in the material for the film? Could they top the Tequila Gundam? Edited April 4, 2013 by Marzan Quote
Twoducks Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Del Toro surely ordered the production staff to include a Mexican model somewhere in the material for the film? Could they top the Tequila Gundam? Top the mighty Tequila? Doubt it, the Russian one already has a sombrero. Quote
raptormesh Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Wow, I love aussie's! Designs weren't so bad after all. Loved Japan's too, shame about the stats. Quote
