Dobber Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Hi guys, thought I'd show some progress shots of my latest project, a 1/72 VF-4 Lightning III. Once yamato announced it's exclusive 1/60 toy, I caught VF-4 fever!!! This is the kit that Valk009 sold over the summer and it is by far the best sculpt of the VF-4 out there IMO. It doesn't have the wonky exagerated nose of the other kit that is out there....sorry I forget which kit is which. Chris Quote
PetarB Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 It's a favourite of mine as well. Looks like you've done all the hard parts. Quote
Grayson72 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Looking good, the one with the bird nose was the Club-M version, This one is based off of the Retppu version which is by far the best. Quote
Valkyrie Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 This one is based off of the Retppu version which is by far the best. Musasiya, actually. The Retppu was the crappy vinyl one.But yea, looking real good! Quote
Grayson72 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Oh yeah, I get those two confused sometimes. Yeah that vinyl one was crap. Quote
electric indigo Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I like the toned-down colors. IMO the full paint scheme + decals is just too busy for this elegant design, but we'll see how this turns out. Quote
neptunesurvey Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Looking good. I agree with indigo about the toned down colors. Quote
Dobber Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 Thanks for the replies guys. I still haven't completely decided what paint scheme I'm going to do. Leaning towards something very similar to the flashback 2012 scheme ( I also liked how it didn't have stripes all over it ) but a little more like real Jolly Rogers colors...ie yellow and black instead of red and black. Still have to figure it out. So in the mean time I'll just paint everything else. Chris Quote
Dobber Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 Would like to do this one, http://www.topedge.com/alley/images/f14a/f14a84i.htm I have this Tomcat built in 1/72 in my display case too. I always liked how the black skull looks. Problem is I don't know how I'd get 2 more black skulls. Could also go with the classic http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-photo-vf084-02xl.htm Neither seem too over done/ flashy to me. Chris Quote
David Hingtgen Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Honestly I don't think a "Roy" scheme would be "appropriate" in-universe. Roy's death was still fairly recent. In DYRL nobody else used his scheme afterwards, even when they became commander of the squadron. In the SDF TV series, I think the best explanation is "they simply didn't repaint it and Hikaru was preserving the memory". But a brand-new Roy-painted VF-4 in 2012? Not likely IMHO. We see it in Frontier as a homage decades later. Just something to think about. Quote
Dobber Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 That's true, maybe I'll just stick to the 2012 scheme with some minor mods, like having the rudders not be painted the hull color but instead continue the black banner with red stripes. Chris Quote
mickyg Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Looks gorgeous Chris! Hasegawa really needs to get on the bandwagon with this one. They need to follow Yamato's lead with the timing! Quote
PetarB Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Hasegawa really needs to get on the bandwagon with this one. I was incredibly doubtful about the possibility of this, but they really surprised me with the VF-11. Who knows... Quote
electric indigo Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Btw does anybody know what the dark areas near the end of the engines are supposed to be? Quote
Dobber Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 Are you refering to the bands that go around the lower half of the engine nacells? If so I'm not sure either. Quick update: painted and weathered the exhaust nozzles/feet. Lots of touch-ups are needed on the airframe still. Not glued on, just wanted to see how they look in place, still need to weather the housing area/cuff. Chris Quote
Grayson72 Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Looks like you've done a panel line wash already, if so did you go with black or a gray color? Quote
Dobber Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 Actually there is no wash on it yet, the panel lines are just pretty deep. Chris Quote
grapetang Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 I like the nose on this better too as well as the subdued colors. Looking good!!! Quote
Dobber Posted February 22, 2012 Author Posted February 22, 2012 Hey Guys, sorry it's been so long. Since I wasn't on a deadline I really just took my time with this....sometimes skipping several days and just didn't work on it. Well, I finished her about a week ago and am now just getting around to taking pictures of her. As usual, my pictures really don't show alot of the subtly of my weathering that is easier to see with the naked eye, but they still don't look too bad. I changed some things from before, like the grey areas by the booster engines are now steel. I also changed the black banner on the V stabs so they cover the rudders too. The missiles I painted like some similar missiles I saw in the VF-25 Master Files book....I was originally going to paint them like U.S. missiles ie...yellow band in the front to denote a live explosive and a brown one further back to denote a live rocket engine, but then just chose to stick with standard Marcross type markings...red. Anyway, Hope you lke her. Next up a 1/72 VF-2SS. Chris Quote
Ignacio Ocamica Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Absolutely beautiful VF-4, one of the best out there!!!! Quote
MechTech Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 That looks great! The lines on that design were always some of my favorite for an aircraft - too bad its not real That sculpt IS better than the vinyl one - which I had. Plus the annoying droopage frome the material was annoying. Great job! - MT Quote
Grayson72 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Wow looks really awesome! What color did you use for the nose cone? Quote
Dobber Posted February 22, 2012 Author Posted February 22, 2012 Thanks guys, much appreciated. @Grayson72, the nose cone is Testors MM Acrylic Radome Tan. Chris Quote
VF5SS Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 But a brand-new Roy-painted VF-4 in 2012? Not likely IMHO. We see it in Frontier as a homage decades later. Just something to think about. I think that would be cooler than another Flashback 2012 VF-4G. Do the VF-X one plz. Quote
PetarB Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) That looks fantastic Dobber. And I really like the sculpt of this, except for some of the panel lines which are a bit wonky (nothing to do with you though!). CANNOT wait to see your VF-2SS. Hope you've got a replacement canopy.... Edited February 22, 2012 by PetarB Quote

specr0101 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Love the panel lines! Great workmanship. Quote
miriya Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Gorgeous! Makes me want to build one up soon too! Quote
Benson13 Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Dobber, what exactly did you use to get those panel lines? I'm going to be building my first model pretty soon and I think I'd like to give that a try. Quote
specr0101 Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Anyone have a extra kit laying around? Quote
