Dobber
Anyone know where to find the article that stated that the new 1/500 Yamato Kit is the 2199 ship? The link at the start of this thread don't work since Starblazers.com is gone. Someone on another forum is telling me I'm wrong and I want to educate him. westfall
As you've said, the article disapeared along with starblazers.com but you are correct. Tim Eldred did state that the 1/500's design was based on the 2199's Yamato. The diference comes only in the scale since, when the model was produced, the new size of the Yamato hadn't yet been established at 333m. So, the model is a 1/500 when compared to the original Yamato but around 1/660 for the 2199 version. But design wise, which is what you need, it is totally based on the 2199 design. I'll drop a line to Tim and see if he knows if there's any backup for that page. On my end, the best i can do is scan a print i have of that page. Dobber
Thanks Westfall, yeah the new site has archived articles but doesn't go back far enough to update #2 which is where I believe the article is with the interview with the designers stating the info. I did find something in the archives that stated it again though...near the bottom under the picture of the 1/1000 kits box art. http://web.archive.org/web/20120903060423/http://www.starblazers.com/html.php?page_id=105 You know how some people can be though...they ARE right because they didn't know and until they see deffinative proof...ie the article...I doubt they will believe. Here is what was exchanged: Me: "Problem is, that the 1/500 kit is technically the first Yamato 2199 kit. The design is of the 2199 version of Yamato so the kit is really about 1/624 with 2199 Yamato's length at 333m. " Response: "Calling this kit the 2199 Yamato is a stretch- especially since it was released to coincide with the 2010 live-action SBY movie. To me, it's simply an modern-tool version of the original 78' 1/500 Yamato. At 530mm, it's dead on for the original Yamato's 265M length. (It's not a scaled-down version of the 1/350. There are big differences) Besides, the fighters that come with the 1/500 Yamato aren't the 2199 versions. Cosmo Zero (short version), Cosmo Tiger, Black Tiger. Interview of Bandai Model developer on ourstarblazers.com Me: "Not a stretch at all. It IS designed off of the 2199 ship. It was released when the movie came out and has no resemblance to the movie ship and i never mentioned or compaired it to the 1/350 kit. I have read that article and all the articles from ourstarblazers.com. Yes it does come with the old fighter designs since the kit came out before 2199 was released. If Starblazers.com didn't go under I would show you the article that stated that the new 1/500 kit used the 2199 design. The article was published around the time the 1/1000 2199 Yamato was comming out. Here is a link to the discussion at MacrossWorld. http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=35927 There is a link to Starblazers.com about 3/4 the way down the page. Unfortunately it doesn't work. You'll see me point out that the 1/1000 is the same design as the 1/500. Someone else states that they read up on it and that I was absolutely right that they used the same design. I really wish I could show you that article from the designers, but alas I can not so you'll probably still not believe me. Also here is a post by the same person that said he read the article after he built the 1/500 kit. Halfway down the page. http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=35927 Comparison pictures between the 2 kits. Note the rear hangar area below the 3rd turret. It is a solid box like area that protrudes out off the hull. Older versions of Yamato have a triangular cut out there and is more blended with the hull. Which can be seen in a photo in the link above. http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q222/cd821/d191be6562bb5c007d98a7ca4c2f2b9d_zps262f9e07.jpg Then there is this post from Hobbytalk by Steve H as he describes all the Yamato ship kits. "Then the recent 1/500 (new tool) Yamato, again almost 2 feet long. This was brought out to ride the coattails of the Live Action Yamato movie but isn't connected to that at all. It attempts to correct what I consider the flaws of the 1/350th kit (so maybe I wasn't alone in those beliefs!) and does a very credible job. However, I find it still overdone to a point, and lo, it's because it was actually a 'trail run' for the revised scale Yamato for the current Yamato 2199! Note that as a modern kit I'm sure lighting it would be much easier. http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN965514" From here: http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=380559 " Not sure what else I can do as other responses seem to be siding with him and thanking him for the info and such. Don't care if I'm wrong...it's just I'm not in this case. I just get kind of tired of either being ignored or called out on this other site. Major Focker
don't get too worked up about it. i've been reading that thread in the other forum and it didn't strike me that folks were siding with the other guy. there was just one "thanks" in response to his post, and it's not even clear if that was intended for him "clarifying" the 1/500 providence or if it were for the link to ourstarblazers that he provided. likely the latter. you've documented your argument well and that should suffice. if it doesn't, well, there are other more interesting things to occupy one's mind. like if the Yamato girls will be part of the Beach Queens line

Dobber
Hi Westfall, hope you can find that page. Lol! it continues: "ugh, more silliness about the new tool 1/500 Yamato actually being from 2199. Simply not true, and impossible. I don't where buddy on Hobbytallk was getting his info, but he should check it out before putting it out there. Without having to check it's pretty obvious Bandai put out the new 1/500 kit to coincide with the 2010 live action movie release. The kit is meant to be a complete redo of the original 1974 Yamato (source? try here: http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN965514/Sci ) Not sure why they didn't do a new tool of the live action movie, but it is what it is. The 1/500 kit having usual classic fighters on board instead of the transforming birds from the live action movie and lacking 2199's cosmos falcon are good indicators of this. From what I've seen of the box art and instructions, it mentions nothing about the live action movie OR 2199. But screen shots from the first TV show are in the instructions. I have no proof but I suspect there might have been some kind of business reason not to do a kit based on the live action ship? Bandai isn't stupid people. They wouldn't miss a chance like that to make some bucks. Nor would they launch 2199 kits a solid YEAR AND A HALF BEFORE THE SHOW EVEN AIRED. Instead they put out a new tool 1/500 to cash in the craze surrounding the new live action movie. Not to mention, the 1/500 lacks a lot of detail found on the 1/1000 kit. If the 1/500 is indeed a 'dry run' for the 1/000, why is all that glorious detail missing? (and wouldn't the smaller kit be missing the detail and not the other way around?) Because it wasn't there...on the 1974 Yamato. Also, basic math supports this. the 2199 Yamato is 333 meters long, yes? The old one 265 meters, correct? The 2199 1/1000 kit is 13inches long (I don't have the fins on mine yet) or 33cm. That means that in 1/500 the kit should measure out to 26inches long or 66cm. Except it is in fact almost 21 inches long (or 53cm for us metric people). And you know what? Those numbers (21inches/53cm long) works out extremely well if the ship is 265 meters long....just like the original." Like Major Focker said...I stated the facts. Already answered all of the comments as to why the old fighters were used ect. Guess there is nothing else I can do. Without the article from Bandai. westfall
@Dobber: The reason why that guy debating you doesn't accept your arguments is simple. He's an idiot. He subverts the info to suit his view and no matter how simple or complex the reasons you give him for the kit being what it is, he'll just continue to poke holes in them. My opinion? Be the bigger man, stop feeding his ego and just walk away, certain that you are right. If i have learned anything in this life is that debating with idiots is a waste of time. Eventualy you lower the barr to his level and then they have won. I'll be back home tomorrow and, if you still want that scan, I'll send it to you, though i doubt he'll see reason. I think even if you got a statement from Bandai saying you were right, it wouldn't be enough. XDDD

(i.e. welcome to my world). The thing is, the benefit of having not actually watched the show yet is that I can look at that Yamamoto figure, say to myself "That's a sexy (without being explicitly pornographic) figure in a badass flight suit with a cute hair style. Bought" without any petty things like knowing what the caracters personality is like to cloud my judgement. similarly I can look at the Yuki figure and say "that's cute, but not doesn't hit all the same points of want that the Yamamoto figure does, I think I can live without it." and call it a day. Major Focker
i didn't mean to say that higher priced figures don't appreciate in value. in fact, they are liable to reach even more absurd prices later on, and i can relate to your experiences of paying double (or more). but between an $80 figure dropping to $60, and a $150 figure dropping to $130, i've seen more of the latter. the thing is, once the initial excess supply (hence the markdown to $130) is depleted, then all bets are off. you see this often with HLJ. they would have a MegaHouse or GSC sale which would include some slow-moving figures (presumably because it was overpriced at release) get a nice enough discount. after that sale and when the usual webstores have runout, then the higher priced figures would command an even higher markup on ebay and YAJ than the average priced figures. in your example, the $150 is likely to fetch $300 (or more), the $80 might go up to $120 or $130 (except of course some really hot/rare items). same as you, i buy figures regardless if i know the character or not, and base my decision on the merits of its sculpt, paint application, pose etc. when i do know the character (and that is not quite often as far as my collection goes) then i do consider whether the figure is representative, rather than focus on accuracy. in Yamamoto's case, it's true that the figure has enhanced some of her proportions and therefore is not technically accurate to the anime. it might not also be in-character for her to be striking that pose and dropping that zipper. but to me, Yamamoto is a kick-ass babe, and that figure gives a kick-ass impression, ergo, insta-buy! anyway, just saw HLJ has now listed Yuki as discontinued. hope some of you guys managed to get yours.
