Skull Hunter Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 (edited) Hey all. Just wanted to share my custom of Lancer made from a Beagle Rand. It was done a while back, but finally got around to posting it. I haven't customized much, so don't be too harsh on me. Almost done with my other custom of Fuke or Rook Bartley see keep an eye out for that. Here goes. First the ride armor mode Edited October 30, 2011 by Skull Hunter Quote
EXO Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Whoah! Nice! Looks like you beat everyone else on this custom... Sadly, not Macross, so I must move. Awesome Job though! KUDOS! Quote
Skull Hunter Posted October 30, 2011 Author Posted October 30, 2011 Thanks EXO! I didn't know I was the first one to do this with all the talent we have on MW. Maybe I was the first one willing to customize a beagle since they aren't that cheap. Sorry about the thread. As you can see by my rank, I don't post very much. Quote
ps99042 Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 WOW! so nice...can i have it? just kidding! Great job though! Can't wait seek to Fuke. Quote
Mog Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 You sir have some massive stones! Curious though, were you able to incorporate the missiles that fire out of the chest area? Overall though, very nice work! Quote
Twoducks Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 OMFG! Shows how awesome the Beagle line could have been!! FANTASTIC WORK SKULL HUNTER!! Quote
derex3592 Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 That is SERIOUSLY awesome!!!!!!!! Great Job!!!! Quote
Roy Focker Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I like everything but the head/hair. Other than that well done. Quote
Archer Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Holy Cow! That is awesome! How did you change the color of the rider's suit from dark blue to that lavender color So amazing, and yeah, really goes to show how awesome the beagle line would have been if it had continued.... Quote
Tober Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Very nice work, well done. Did you actually paint the cloth? I'm interested in knowing how you recolored the visor too. Quote

Overall though, very nice work! No, I couldn't incorporate the missiles. This was about my 4th custom so I didn't have too much experience. Plus, I had used the parts from a Cykill model kit to make it all work and the chest area just doesn't open up so I left it alone. Thanks for the compliment I like everything but the head/hair. Other than that well done. Yeah. I'm not entirely happy with the head myself. I don't do too much sculpting, but tried my best. I actually used mighty putty. LOL. I think that you guys will like the head on the Bartley better. It's more accurate than this one. Quote

How did you change the color of the rider's suit from dark blue to that lavender color So amazing, and yeah, really goes to show how awesome the beagle line would have been if it had continued.... I changed the color of the suit by simply painting it. If it gets handled too much, it does seem to come off a little. As you can see by the picture of the figure's lower back which shows some flaking. I try not to handle it too much, but overall, everything else is quite durable. When I do my conversion I'll send you a head sculpt. That'll be way into 2012 though. That would be awesome EXO!!! Thanks. Yeah, it's gonna take you a while. This thing took me months to do. Quote
Skull Hunter Posted October 30, 2011 Author Posted October 30, 2011 Very nice work, well done. Did you actually paint the cloth? I'm interested in knowing how you recolored the visor too. Yeah, I painted the cloth with some model master acrylic paint. The visor was a bit tricky. First you have to figure out how to take the helmet apart which was glued together and secured with a screw. I used a FEW drops of acetone to loosen the glue and pried off the pieces. Then I used more acetone to take off the color on the helmet. Surprisingly it came off pretty easy. It became clear, but began to get a little cloudy, but don't worry. Once you paint it, it looks fine. I used a model master transparent green for that. I wasn't entirely happy with the sides of the helmet because I used the pieces from the Cykill model kit and they were a bit small, but it didn't bother me too much. Overall, I thought it worked. Archer Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Acetone, good stuff . I'm surprised that it decomposed the glue only a little though. Due to its organic structure, I would expect the substance to rip straight through the glue, and maybe even tear into the plastic a little as well Quote

Due to its organic structure, I would expect the substance to rip straight through the glue, and maybe even tear into the plastic a little as well Actually it did get to the plastic which looked like it distorted it a little. That's why I used very little like a drop or two and worked fast at prying it apart, because the color of the visor had come off onto the helmet. I didn't care because I would wrepaint it anyway. But I'm sure there are better solutions out there. And the helmet comes off in three pieces. I would suggest taking off the middle panel first, then the sides. Quote
EXO Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I tried to use superglue remover on my first attempt to modify these and it melted the plastic. I was disappointed that the whole thing is glued together even though the protypes had screws. The one screw they forgot to take care off was that hideous one on the neck. My customization involved removal of the cloth which I hated. I also wanted to make the legging black instead of red. http://www.macrosswo...51_312_8469.jpg Quote
Archer Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I am no customizer, but I do know a bit about organic chemistry. For a substance that can still get the job done (at least, in my opinion) I would try to use either ethyl acetate or dimethyl chloride (DCM) over acetone. Based on my work in an organic chem lab, acetone is usually used only to clean glassware and rarely as a solution for very heavy compound reaction. This is because it tears through compounds super quickly, breaking down bonds. Thats probably why it got to the plastic in the visor, along with removing paint in it as well. On the other hand, DCM or ethyl acetate are almost always used in reaction mixes as they break down compounds, but not to the magnitude at which they destroy the original substance. This might help with only taking off paint, but not damaging the plastics. Thats my little schpeel for the day Quote
Jasonc Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 That Yellow is awesome. Congrats on a job well done. Now I know what to do with my Cy-Kill model kit. Quote
spedfish Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 WOW!!! Awesome job!! Even did a head sculpt. I was working on one of these, but I got sidetracked, by so many other projects. How long did it take you exactly? Customizing takes too long, especially when you don't have that much experience . I think I got a little overwhelmed, trying to do so much with it. I can't wait to see the Bartley!! Damn, I need to work on that thing some more, so I can have one of those fine lookin things Quote

But without it, to me, it doesn't look complete. I wish that the paint could stick to it better. Even the factory color came off it you handled it too much. Beagle could have used something else that was more durable. Good luck on your customization EXO. I am no customizer, but I do know a bit about organic chemistry. Thats my little schpeel for the day I wish I did have those things that you mentioned, but I just used what I had on hand and hoped for the best. What you're describing sounds real scientific like the show the Big Bang Theory. I will keep that in mind for future reference if I can figure out where to get those things. Quote

Like I said, the head sculpt isn't the best, but it does the job. I don't remember exactly how long, but I would say approximately 4-6 months. There was some modifications like cutting pieces from the Cykill kit and fusing it onto the figure in order to make things fit right. I did that for the sabers, the motorcycle seat and chassis, and the nose of the bike. There was alot of trial and error with fitting issues for perfect transformation as well. The Bartley was even harder to do since I had to size things down and also add things cuz it's a girl. I even made the cannon for her which took longer than expected. I should be done by the beginning of the year or so. Quote
505thAirborne Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Your Yellow Ride-Armor is beyond awesome, though BEAGLE never made one nice to know someone has this version, cant wait to see your Bartley version! Quote
Frogze Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Fantastic custom, you did a great job on the Blowsperior! I hope you'll post some pics of your process on the Bartley, keep up the great work! Quote
Skull Hunter Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 Fantastic custom, you did a great job on the Blowsperior! I hope you'll post some pics of your process on the Bartley, keep up the great work! Thanks for the compliment Frogze. Unfortunately, I don't have progress pics for either of them. I was so caught up in working on them that I didn't think of taking pics of my progress. Though I am able to answer any questions I can. Quote
RD Blade Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Can't tell you how impressive that custom is. Maybe iGear can replicate your process like they did the MP conehead seekers. Quote
Skull Hunter Posted November 4, 2011 Author Posted November 4, 2011 Can't tell you how impressive that custom is. Maybe iGear can replicate your process like they did the MP conehead seekers. Is it a paying gig? Thanks for the kind words. Quote
