sketchley Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 2011 Vol. 02 out. Cover: Macross gets 2nd billing, after Gundam and before Code Gias. Macross Content: Macross Ace + news: starts with mentioning that October 2011 is the 30th anniversary of Macross. Hybrid Pack: 4 pages! Movie and game and more. Game mecha introduced: Hound Vajra and the VB-6 Koening Monster, FTW! Macross 30th news: Newtype Ace X Telephone Service, keitai straps, etc., Yoko Kanno Produces Macross F Super Dimensional Super Performance Cosmic Nyan BD&DVD Macross Goods Express: Sheryl/Klan SD figurines and Sheryl's mist... which I still think looks like a home pregnancy tester! Love Song(s) of the Galaxy: 2 pg splash featuring FB2012 Minmei, but also all the other main Macross singers (DYRL Minmei, Ishtar, Sharon, Mireenu, Sarah, Mao, Sheryl, Ranka) Macross the First: reprint of the 1st Mars chapter... at least the 1st 6 pages are in colour, and is followed by... MtF: Unified Forces Mechanic Vol.1: SDF-1, ARMD, PPB, VF-1, ES-11D, QF-3000E, SLV-III, HWR-00-Mk II, ADR-04-Mk X, MBR-O4 Mk VI, and... SDF-1's ship log: return to Earth from Pluto, and... This Month's Minmei-chan: 2 pg B&W collection of illos from previous chapters. The WTF moment goes to: Macross Plus world guide (2 pg) followed by... Macross Plus TAC Name #05 ... what about 7th Chord? I found that one much more interesting and... ORIGINAL. Non-Macross Content (focusing on the manga, as w/ news, interviews, et al, it's too much to report! Non-manga is indicated.) Masamune Shirow poster: surprise surprise! Full Metal Panic! Another: not in 1st issue. Artwork looks clean, and storyline looks clear and interesting. Masamune Shirow Works [column]: I thought it was just an ad in the 1st issue. Turns out it's a regular column. This one's topic is Landmates. The ad parts: Appleseed XIII OVA and Appleseed 1~4 collections. Tiger & Bunny: artwork looks clean and easy to follow. Alas, as the 1st issue gave me the impression that it's like watching a superhero video game over someone else's shoulder, I'm not interested. If you're into it, pls review. Tiger & Bunny 4 panel: gag manga. Tiger & Bunny Anthology: 2 shorts by different artists. Last Exile: interesting and clear hashed art. Enjoyed #1's story. Don't like how the character's all look like preteens, but other than that, it's quite dynamic. Maagumerudo: despite having excellent mecha design skills, the layout doesn't flow very well, and the story is pedantic at worst, predictable at best. Mecha/space opera genre, but it's portrayal leaves TOO much to be desired. Gave up on #1 within the 1st 10 pages... Fate/Zero Comic A La Carte: 3 shorts by different artists. Not in #1. Sacred Seven: panel organization/layout is unclear at times, but otherwise OK. Storyline is juvenile and I gave up on #1 within the 1st 10 pages because it was cliched, trite and frankly, boring. Maybe I'm not the target demographic? Un-go: clean and clear artwork. Not sure where the story's going, but just for that, it's interesting. Horror/mystery genre. Legend of Tomino: gag manga about... Tomino. #1 was fun. Blood Dog: artwork very clear, and the story even better. After Macross The First, the most recommended. Not sure if horror works all that well in manga format, but I really enjoy the originality and characterization. Asura's Wrath: not quite into the Streetfighter/gods battle royale rumble genre, but #1 had some interesting stuff. The artwork, though confusing in a couple of spots, is a refreshing break from the traditional manga style - though it tends to be washed out in a few too many places. Towanoquon: another manga that has clear art and layouts, but the characters just don't appeal to me. I like power suits. I don't mind power suits fighting monsters. I just don't like kids in the mix... again, it's another manga that makes me worry about the target demographic of Newtype Ace and if Macross is sustainable in it... Yojiten: clear artwork and fun, in a not serious, mindless way. Borderline: very clean and clear artwork in this mecha combat/high school story. #3 recommended. Tera Ethinic Heroes: not in #1. Artwork looks a little unclear in spots. Not sure what to make of it on first viewing... White Swan: not in #1. artwork looks clear. Looks serious/horror/romance, but ends with a gag strip... another not sure what to make of it... Conclusion: the reprinting of Macross the First is disappointed but not completely unexpected. For ¥580 it's not a big hit on the bank, especially as some of the non-Macross content is quite interesting (though, there's still a bunch of crap...) Not sure if it's worth the import fees for those overseas. Quote

Hell, I'm even thinking about giving it up in favor of only getting the collected editions... <shrugs> To each there own. Though, I am surprised about two things: Macross content has increased (a 2nd manga, never-mind anything about it) and the size of the Macross news feature. Quote

Hell, I'm even thinking about giving it up in favor of only getting the collected editions... I'm beginning to feel the same way. I'm having a hard time convincing myself to spend the money each month on something not completely Macross. I may just get the M: The First volumes as they come out. Quote
jvmacross Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Macross the First: reprint of the 1st Mars chapter... at least the 1st 6 pages are in colour, and is followed by... In these color pages...is the SDF-1 shown?...If so, is it SDF-1 TV colors or SDF-1 movie colors?...What about the Daidalus and Prometheus? Quote
Gubaba Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 In these color pages...is the SDF-1 shown?...If so, is it SDF-1 TV colors or SDF-1 movie colors?...What about the Daidalus and Prometheus? No...it's Misa's flashback to Riber telling her he's leaving for Mars. Quote
sharky Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 (edited) OK, I just got in my copy of Newtype Ace vol. 1. My first reaction is that it's pretty thin. NOT! WTF! They could have split that up into at least 2 different mangas. Times must really be tough for publishing for them to have to cram THAT much into one book. I think I'm done with these. I'll get the M: The 1st books as they are released. It's a shame though. I thought Macross Ace was really cool. Edited October 31, 2011 by sharky Quote
sketchley Posted November 11, 2011 Author Posted November 11, 2011 (edited) 2011 Vol. 03 contents roundup: Macross Content: Macross Ace +: New column: "Playback in divas". Features M+'s Mao Nome. 6 full colour pgs. Hybrid Pack: 1 & 3/4 pages. Bottom features game-original YF-29 variations: Ozuma's craft, Low-Visibility Specification, Isamu's craft, & Isamu's craft with Super Pack equipment. [is it just me, or do these 3 variants look better than Aruto's version?) 1/4 pg: "Yokko Kanno Produces Macross F Super Dimensional Super Live Cosmic Nyan" DVD & BR release. 1 pg Macross the First manga colour ad. Macross the First: gorgeous painting of Misa reclining. I think Gubaba's already covered the big revelations elsewhere. So, I'll just add that the first few pages are of the last few that were printed in the last edition of Macross Ace - which makes me want to go back and double check if NA #2's chapter had different or rearranged pages & panels. As always, the artwork is great, but the character artwork is truly outstanding this time. 1 pg Macrss 7 Trash B&W ad 1 pg B&W ad for the more recent Kadokawa Comics A Macross manga collections. Macross Plus TAC Name #06: story takes us up to Isamu & Guld folding to Earth. Now... there are some differences that I've been noticing. In #5, it's directly stated that Millard has been amputated due to a flying accident. I don't recall that every being mentioned in the anime (though, that might just have been the English dub). We also got to see the YF-19 and YF-21 blowing up a Phalanx real good. This issue, just glancing at it, it looks like Isamu and Guld consumating their relationships with their girlfriends (Sally and Myung) isn't pictured, and the fight in front of the hospital where Isamu accidently punches Myung is covered in flashback. (this isn't a big change, IMHO, as it maintains the high pace of the plot.) ... and NA #4's preview: - anime, goods & 30th anniversary information (looking forward to this last one) - Macross the First: completion of the Mars chapter - Macross Plus: TAC Name Non-Macross Content (focusing on the manga I'm reading in the previous issues, et al, it's too much to report!) Masamune Shirow poster: finally one that is reminiscent of his manga works and paintings in the Intron Depot series. Focus is a tank, but we get a radome aircraft and a pair of ?Landmates? in the background. There's also a LOT more Gundam featured in the news & anime full colour sections. I sense a trend... Un-go: not sure where this is going, but my interest is waffling. Pace drags at time. Full Metal Panic! Another: interesting and continuing to get more interesting. I want to say to some of the other manga-ka who started in NA #1: THIS is how you introduce characters and pace a story! (Though the artwork in the last few pages of this issue looks rushed...) Legend of Tomino: fun and interesting. I don't know what's better - the over-the-top stereotyping of late '70's/'80's anime industry stuff, or if this story is fundamentally true with only a bit of embellishment here and there... wish I knew more about Tomino's true story to compare. Nevertheless, fascinating on a couple of levels. Last Exile: still not digging the pre-teen's w/ boobs look, but it's nice that we get introduced to some supporting characters who actually look like adults. Story is quite interesting and well paced. Looking forward to reading this one. Blood C: another well written and paced story that I'm looking forward to. This one appears to be the first part of a two-parter (or longer). Alas, doesn't look like they have anything on the rival paranormal investigators introduced in NA #2. Masamune Shirow Works [column]: topic: Dominion. Ah, brings back memories. Alas, doesn't look like anything new. Asura's Wrath: story is starting to get predictable... and not interesting. Nevertheless, kudos to it as it's got the longest mid-story fast-forward ever w/ the same characters - 100 years! Anyhow, the technology/city of the gods is the most interesting - as it reminds me a lot of a manga concept I was working on about 10~15 years ago. Borderline: just as the characters were getting interesting, it's totally changed gears. This is, I'd like to describe as, a clip show. Though, it's not. It's simply background exposition, from beginning to end. Nice artwork, but I'm disappointed as it's ruined the flow of the narrative established in NA #1 & 2, and has put a decidedly deadly realistic spin on what was otherwise a kinda serious but still silly story (idols in robot suits at the border). Spy MKT: man oh man, this one is a highlight! From the awesomer than awesome James Bond spoof, to the pseudo James Bondian pick-up lines English lessons on the bottom of every second page. Here's my favourites from NA #1: "not only gun has a big load" "Cigar? Is it really a cigar you suck?" "Gun? I already dropped my gun, you know. If you say I still have one, why don't you look for it by yourself?" ... wish the next James Bond movie had lines like that. Not sure if Daniel Craig could say them with a straight face, mind you. frothymug Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 When I first started reading this "amputee" stuff in this thread, I was like, "What the hell are you guys talking about?" Upon watching the part in the OVA when Millard is chewing out Isamu, I didn't realize that his boot was actually a prosthetic leg... or at least it appears to be one. I always thought he was just getting some pesky stone out of his shoe, or something like that. Good catch! Quote

Gubaba Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Is this the successor to Macross Ace? Sort of. It's got Macross the First and the Macross Plus manga in it, along with some Macross news and articles every month. Quote
sketchley Posted November 13, 2011 Author Posted November 13, 2011 (edited) it doesnt matter how it occured but it was something that ended his flight status regardless. i know Sketchy mentioned that the quality of the art sucked at first. has it improved? Sketchley. (Before you blow it off as nit-picking about spelling, trust me it's not. About a year ago, someone got their panties in a serious knot because there was another person posting in the same thread with a similar name and that someone thought we were the same to people. They then had a big blow-up against me, because that someone didn't like either of our opinions - despite the opinions and the language used to post them being quite different. I don't want a sequel to that, thank you.) The artwork is... hmm... sufficient. The weakest part is the character design (which is hit and miss), and the strongest is the mechanical art (this episode opens with some really awesome looking VF-11's and YF-19 & YF-21 action). Panel layout is dynamic. I'll have to get back to you on the story (as I haven't been able to read it yet). However, I found the preceding chapter (in NA #2) a good read, with a solid pacing and a few new things and changes from the OVA & movie versions. Edited November 13, 2011 by sketchley Quote
Raptor One Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Not sure if this is the right thread to ask this in but what's the deal with Macross 7th Code (Chord?). Are there any collected editions like for Macross The First or was it only available in Macross Ace? Quote
sketchley Posted December 6, 2011 Author Posted December 6, 2011 Sadly it's only appeared in Macross Ace and has yet to be reprinted. Personally, I'm hoping that once Macross Plus T.A.C. Name finishes in Newtype Ace, 7th Chord will be picked up again... Quote
sketchley Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 Vol. 4, 2012.01 issue out. ... and surprise, surprise, Macross is on the COVER! Macross Ace Plus: Playback in Divas: featuring Sera Nome new feature: Macross history. Point form, but groovy nonetheless. This issue: Birth of the Universe to Macross Zero. Macross Express Goods: mostly clothes (shirts, ties, jacket), with a bit on the VF-11D Thunder Focus. Manga Macross the First (since the cat's out of the bag, I don't feel that spoiler tags are needed, but stop reading if you don't want to get too spoiled): as indicated last issue, this is the final chapter of the Mars.. uhm... chapter of the series. The meeting of Liber not only added a new twist, but also made the situation that much more tragic. Mikimoto-san, in one swoop, has not only made that whole part of Misa's background that much more tragic and current, but has also expanded on the super dimension and the effects of super dimension using engines (last issue stated that due to a strange interaction between the gravity mines and the overloading reactor of the base, what basically amounts to a rift in time has opened). Surprisingly, there's English in this chapter, so I won't say any more on that (only mentioning what isn't stated in the English). On top of all that, we also get a romanization for Liber's first and last names: Liber Fruhling. Alas, next to nothing on Minmei, and the implications are that she's been crushed by falling debris... the manga has definitely gotten my attention, as it's now effectively in new territory. Macross Plus T.A.C. Name On first glance, the artwork appears to have dropped a bit in regards to the Valkyries. But who cares! We get to see Myung's boobies! Oh, the story has deviated somewhat to the OVA & movie. Beyond the truncating of the story, the argument in front of the hospital took place inside or near the burning room... on top of that, they destroyed a Phalanx during testing. Nyan Toro Macross F manga. It's the first chapter of at least two chapters.Haven't been following it elsewhere, so I can't comment if it's new, continuing or a reprint. One thing is clear: MORE Macross manga is pure win. I was initially worried that the Macross manga were being published in the rear quarter of the magazine. But now that we have 3 manga AND two news columns, it's making me excited about Macross continuing to be published. Quote
sketchley Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 Had some time to look more closely at Macross the First, and... ... not only are the time "slides" into the past, but also into the future. We see Hikaru's VF-1 flying in front of what is presumably the Megaroad 1 being escorted by Zentraadi battleships, but also meeting a VF-4! I'm not a betting man, but I think it's fairly safe to say that future Hikaru was in that VF-4. Nevertheless, it's a very exciting twist to the series. As it's not only directly addressing the fate of Hikaru/Misa/Minmei on the Megaroad 1, but also implying what happened to the fold drive that disappeared when the SDF-1 accidentally folded to the orbit of Pluto. Genus storytelling masterstroke there. Quote

I have, and I can tell you this: the way it's handled is akin to Akira (the manga, not the anime). I don't read Japanese, but yes, I have collected the series up through the last collected volume (I also have all the Macross Ace issues) ...... Based on what you are describing and what I have seen, it seems like it is not a retelling of the original...but an alternate reality altogether (like the Star Trek reboot).....nothing wrong with that...right? As for Akira, never watched the anime or read the manga.......so the reference does not help me understand your comparison...... I am not collecting Newtype Ace, so I will need to wait until (hopefully) the next chapters are collected into a new volume. Until then, looking forward to your continuing observations/spoilers....... So, what you describe in your spoiler...was that the cliffhanger for the next issue?...If not, what was Hikaru's reaction and was it reported to Global/ SDF-1 science team? Like any good sci-fi story...........that type of knowledge seems to have repercussions... Quote

sketchley Posted December 11, 2011 Author Posted December 11, 2011 Based on what you are describing and what I have seen, it seems like it is not a retelling of the original...but an alternate reality altogether (like the Star Trek reboot).....nothing wrong with that...right? Apples and oranges, my friend. Star Trek (and all the other series that have to do a reboot) are creatively bankrupt. In the sense that they can't be creative within the confines of what's gone before. Macross, on the other hand, has been continuously re-visioned since the very beginning. Of the top of my head, there are: SDF Macross (TV series, 1982) DYRL? (movie, 1984) SDFM:DYRL (PS/SS game, 1997) MtF (manga, 2009) Not one of them is a restart, reboot or whatever the zeitgeist word de jour is to describe that phenomena. In addition, subsequent productions have continuously re-visioned (or at the very least reinterpreted) events to varying degrees. So, what you describe in your spoiler...was that the cliffhanger for the next issue?...If not, what was Hikaru's reaction and was it reported to Global/ SDF-1 science team? My general impression of MtF is that the focus is mostly on the (main) characters and the plot proceeds at a breakneck speed. This last part of the Mars story arc is consistent with that. It's a definite WTF moment for everyone (Hikaru, Misa and us readers), but the story barely pauses for it. Which is where things differ from Akira (the phenomena became the initial motivation for Kei to stay close to Kaneda, if memory serves). Nevertheless, the sequence moves the tragedy of Riber/Liber into the sublime, and has palpable pathos. That said, as that the phenomena occurred during the wrap up of the story arc, the manga doesn't pause to address it. So, it might be brought up in a debriefing or discussion later in the story. I'm buying and following the volumes, but what I'm trying to ask is if the drawings are self-explanatory. I'd put it up there with the appearance of the SDFN-04 Global in the MF TV series: if you're paying attention to the details (shapes of ships, serial numbers on the sides of VF's, things like that), then you'll notice in a big way. If you're just a casual reader with little knowledge of the other Macross series, then the significance of what's shown will be lost, but the moment itself will still be a WTF. Quote
Tochiro Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Picked mine up on the way home from work today and I gotta say - the way the whole Riber situation was handled was just...wow... In one masterful stroke nothing is overly changed while unlimited possibilities have been unlocked. I normally wait weeks before I actually sit down and read MTF - I marathoned this newest chapter on the train home! Quote
