areaseven Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 (edited) This December, Ranma ½ returns to Japanese TV in a 2-hour live-action special. The much-forgotten manga/anime by Rumiko Takahashi (Urusei Yatsura, InuYasha) was Viz Media's bread and butter during the anime boom of the 1990s, but people stopped talking about it in the early 2000s. The TV special stars the following: Kenta Kaku as Ranma Saotome Natsuna as female Ranma Yui Aragaki as Akane Tendo Kyoko Hasegawa as Kasumi Tendo Maki Nishiyama as Nabiki Tendo Furuta Arata as Genma Saotome Katsuhisa Namase as Soun Tendo Kenta Nagayama as Tatewaki Kuno Yuta Kanai as Hikaru Gosunkugi Shosuke Tanihara as Dr. Tofu Ryosei Tayama as Vice Principal Okumata I wonder who will play Shampoo... Black Valkyrie Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I wonder who's gonna play Happosai. Quote
Renato Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I'll be watching this for Natsuna and nothing else . Quote
Funkenstein Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 How are they going to handle the casual nudity? I don't know what kind of content Japanese live-action tv contains though I suspect casual nudity may not be an issue. Quote
Renato Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 How are they going to handle the casual nudity? By omitting it outright, I predict. Quote
ly000001 Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Kyoko Hasegawa as Kasumi Tendo "Kasumi, you look different. Did you do something with your hair?" Quote
JELEINEN Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 With just two hours, then they probably won't include Shampoo or Ryouga, which would let them skip having to do the (likely bad) CGI for a pig and a cat transformation. That still leaves them a panda, but one human-sized critter will probably be easier to deal with than a bunch of them. Quote
Moly_Sigang Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 I wish Rumiko Takahashi would consider continuing the Ranma 1/2 anime series 'coz it ended too abruptly. It would be great to see the Herb arc or the Saffron arc from the manga animated. Also, will this live action focus only on the main characters? Quote

I'm sure they'll try to squeeze in Shampoo, but leave out the part of her turning into a cat. Ryoga may or may not be in the movie, as he was vital to Akane's character development in the manga and anime. Quote

Takahashi has a habit of leaving her manga titles open-ended and having the anime adaptations end with no resolution to the overall storylines. Mind you, I don't know how Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku and InuYasha ended, or if they ended at all. All I know is that the Ranma ½ manga ended by not ending the marriage issue at all. Quote

It's been so long that I don't remember exactly, but I think Ryoga didn't get introduced until a few episodes in and Shampoo even later. Looking at the cast list, I'm guessing they're just adapting the initial story. Quote

Looking at the cast list, I'm guessing they're just adapting the initial story. They haven't announced who will play Nabiki. She'd better be equally kawaii, or it wouldn't be the Tendo sisters at all. Ryoga actually came first in the storyline. Shampoo was supposed to be introduced in season 2, but the anime got low ratings and was facing cancellation, so she was brought in to end season 1. Because episode 18 (the season 1 finale) got very high ratings, the show was retooled for a second season a month later. Quote
Beltane70 Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Maison Ikkoku was probably Rumiko Takahashi's only manga series to have an actual ending. Quote
ShadowerV2 Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Inuysha also had an ending as well. They made one last season called the final chapter. So I guess that's 2 of her works that had proper endings. Quote
Einherjar Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Hope they make up a conclusive ending for this adaptation. Quote
the white drew carey Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I'm just not sure what the point is if it is going to be a drama. Quote
Jefuemon Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I'm just not sure what the point is if it is going to be a drama. That's what all shows of that type are called over here. You've got "Variety", and "Drama". Variety has shows from talk shows to comedy ensembles (Mecha Mecha Iketeru and Lincoln being my favorites), drama covers pretty much anything that scripted and acted, be it drama, action, comedy, horror, etc. Someone else was asking about the nudity. It depends on when and where it's going to be aired. One of the major stations during the Golden Time, no nudity. After 11 or so, possibility of the casual nudity. On cable, late at night- boobies a flying everywhere. Quote
areaseven Posted October 10, 2011 Author Posted October 10, 2011 (edited) A bit off-topic, but this would be a good way to portray Genma in the TV movie: Edited April 21, 2014 by areaseven Quote

atomicscissors Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 ^ Ha! Pretty nice! Though I think Natsuna's outfit should be tighter around her chesticles. Quote
cwmodels Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Kasumi Tendo is the only one that looks right. The rest of 'em looks like bad cosplays! Quote
areaseven Posted November 14, 2011 Author Posted November 14, 2011 No DoCo this time. Pop idol group 9nine will record the theme song "Chikutaku☆2NITE" for the TV special. 9nine to Sing for Live-Action Ranma ½ Quote
Castel Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 (edited) Akane and kuno are really not bad at all. Both Maison Ikkoku and Inuyasha have "real" ends. Which is no exactly the case with Urusei Yatsura. But concerning the end of Ranma 1/2, as the two main characters are what ? 17 ? i would say that's a good thing that she chose to not marry them. Edited November 14, 2011 by Castel Quote
areaseven Posted November 15, 2011 Author Posted November 15, 2011 The official poster has been revealed, featuring original artwork by Takahashi herself. Quote
areaseven Posted November 15, 2011 Author Posted November 15, 2011 (edited) Worst panda suit ever! They should've borrowed the suit from the Panda Cheese commercials. At least the cross-promotion would've given the TV special a win. Edited May 23, 2012 by areaseven Quote
cwmodels Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Even the "Self Pleasuring Panda" looks better. Quote

Castel Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 As the budget for this stuff is probably not really high, well, all in all it's not so bad. Quote
areaseven Posted November 15, 2011 Author Posted November 15, 2011 (edited) And now for a sneak preview of the TV special. Looks like Ryoga's in it, as this scene is where Akane's ponytail gets lopped off. Edited April 21, 2014 by areaseven Quote

mrhillz Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Fansubs? Ranma was one of my favorite anime series in the 90's, I wouldn't mind watching it, no matter how godawful it is. Quote
