areaseven
I feel the need, the need... for speed! Oh wait - wrong movie.Best Guy (ベストガイ) is a 1990 film made by Toei in cooperation with the JASDF. Apparently, the title of "Best Guy" is a rank higher than "Top Gun" in Japan. From what I've read, the movie, to no surprise, flopped at the box office and received poor reviews. Still, it's cool to see the F-15J in action for a change.Just by watching this sample clip, one can't help but insert Maverick, Goose and Iceman's random one-liners in it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEt3CKfji0M Edited November 27, 2014 by areaseven

Vifam7
I have this movie on DVD. It's not that bad. In terms of plot, it's pretty much the same as TOP GUN and not any better or worse. Same "Maverick" type lead with questions about his father, woos the pretty girl, eventual loss of confidence, etc. The lead is played by Oda Yuuji. He became a big star after this movie. Why this movie is weak compared to TOP GUN is the fact that (1)it doesn't have a rockin' soundtrack (2) no cliche but cool one-liners (3) no shirtless beefy men to draw in the female audience (4)they don't get to blow up MiGs. On the positive side, the aerial shots and sound effects of the F-15s are pretty good.
Funkenstein
The MiGs in Top Gun were F-4E trainers, right?
myk
No they were F5's...
505thAirborne
No they were F5's... If you hang out at Van Nuys Airport once in awhile (I recommend the 94th Aero Squadron for that) you'll see those F5's there!
Bowen
If you hang out at Van Nuys Airport once in awhile (I recommend the 94th Aero Squadron for that) you'll see those F5's there! Do they still have the same paintjob?
peter
looks tacky, but I might try to watch it, haha! One of my classmates used to fly for the JASDF.
505thAirborne
Do they still have the same paintjob? I moved from LA in 07, last time I saw those fighters, I saw one in black with the Red Star and another had a MIG Flanker like Camo pattern to it, looked awesome! David Hingtgen
They taxi around with the ladders hanging off the plane? I think any USAF crew chief would have a heart attack if they saw that.

areaseven
According to the Japanese Wikipedia, the movie has the Tupolev Tu-16 and Sukhoi Su-27, but they were portrayed via special effects - which did not blend well with the F-15J live footage. At least they didn't use old American fighters and pretend they were MiGs. Edited August 12, 2011 by areaseven

Beltane70
This video made me wonder. Did they use the idling F-15 engine noise for the Valkyries' idling sound, or do most fighter engines sound the same? David Hingtgen
Off the top of my head, the JASDF has always been very helpful to Japanese film makers etc, for recording sounds. Odds are good they did get an F-15 recording.

Noyhauser
I can't believe I watched the whole clip. Well the end did have the use of the TDU-10 Towed Target... which is something I've never seen before. Kinda interesting in a way.
