Guest davidwhangchoi Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 ZA WAARUDO!! lol, i stopped time and posted on MW before Kotaku had a chance to post their review of JOJO. "Soshite, toki ga ugokidasu... And time flows again..." Quote
DuelGundam2099 Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 (edited) Yesterday I started watching the Tatsunoko classic Hurricane Polymar since Anime Sols picked up the series and it is nice and campy, the titular hero reminds me of Bruce Lee. I also watched the first three eps of Girls Und Panzer. Normally I'd rip into this, but I have nothing on this. It is just bland nothing, nothing bad or good (I'll give them credit for not having horrendous music). I swear the hair styles are ripped off from other anime characters. Lack of male characters raises an eyebrow. I will give the creators credit for giving technical aspects. Finally I officially have a new pet peeve in anime: Anime that don't have the opening theme in the beginning of the first episode and use the opening as the ending theme for that episode. Where the hell did this trend start? I really want to know. Edited September 8, 2013 by DuelGundam2099 Quote
Keith Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 The first trailer for the Moretsu Piratez movie has already been released. Back to Monogatari though, a beautiful resolution to that problem, but now... Quote
Archer Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Started Clannad. All my feels, the man tears....... Quote
Scream Man Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I have decided to try Gundam Age. episode one was OK. I shall journey on. Quote
Keith Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Clannad was a great show, just make sure to follow through to After Story, and skip the shitty movie verzion. Quote
Marzan Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 The latest Monogatari chapter was great. spoiler Seeing it wetted my apetite for the Kizumonogatari prequel even more. Quote
antibiotictab Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I went to watch "Anohana" the movie. Quote

Yup, I just watched back through Bakemono to give nyself a refresher for all that's been goung on too, snd it all flows together insanely well. Quote
DuelGundam2099 Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 (edited) So I just finished Girls und Panzer. It is basically like Patlabor: Good action parts under layers of boring characters and plot with the setting the only real think going for it substance wise. I will give the series credit for not being too fan servicy and trying to be smart with the battles it had. Well, ignoring the lack of combat gear and safety precautions anyway. Marzan Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Done with Outlaw Star which ended up being pretty standard outlaw in space kind of fare. Not bad by any means, but not really that great either. I've got the Manwaru Penguindrum BD sets here waiting for me. I actually got it after reading a couple of glowing reviews on it right here on this thread. I hope it's as good as advertised. I had a hard time getting into Utena, but ended up loving it, so I'm hoping my horizons will be similarly expanded by this series. Quote
ron5864 Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Can't believe how much the Martian Successor Nadesico is like the original Macross SDF in some ways. Like having a singing and swimsuit idol contest on board the Nadesico space battle fortress amidst an alien attack. Yurika singing like Minmay. Her supposed boyfriend (Akito) is a pilot of a Aestivalis mecha. Hopefully, no pineapple episodes here. Quote

You'll need to rewatch coz... it already happened in the very early episodes. Quote
Marzan Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Latest Attack on Titan episode confirmed what everyone was suspecting namely that Annie was the female Titan. They conveniently left out how she got to and from the Forest of Giant Trees to Wall Sina. 2 episodes left now. Another Monogatari recap? 2 recaps after 11 episodes is a bit much if you ask me. And Mawaru Penguindrum is awesome so far. Thanks to all who recommended it on this thread. Quote
DuelGundam2099 Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 I always thought that was Ymir, but I guess I was wrong. Anyway, I've been taking on some dumb ova series called Shonan Junai Gumi or something because it is a prequel to some famous anime who's main character is a teacher (sorry a GREAT teacher) with wrestling skills or something. Only two eps in and I can already tell not only is it not funny, but they both feel like two stories randomly smashed together. Throw in implied rape and turtle metaphors (why did you drag Gamera into your dick comparison contest?) and you get, well this. Maybe the other episodes will be better, not holding my breath though. ErikElvis Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Watching attack on Titan and desert punk. Have to say I find desert punk quite amusing. Quote

Oh yeah, there was a "pineapple" episode on the Nadesico. But that Gekiganger anime otaku was not exactly up to Roy Fokker caliber. The show had other Macross parody references. Ruri, the "cybernetic fairy," was the coolest character on the show. Quote

DuelGundam2099 Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 (edited) I just watched some one shot OVA called The Girl From Phantasia and I can safely say that this is the worst one shot OVA I've ever seen. Pretty much everything I disliked about Excel Saga under half an hour with little exposition and too many panty shots. The only good parts were that the characters were not too obnoxious and the ending theme was okay. Normally I'd wait after I've seen some more stuff, but this warranted a say due to how outright bad it was. Edited September 15, 2013 by DuelGundam2099 Quote

DuelGundam2099 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Yesterday I watched some one shot ova called Girl Detective Club. Kind of dumb, the jokes were hit and miss, and it really didn't need incest, but at least the action was decent. Quote
frothymug Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 "Now and Then, Here and There..." = Acchi Kocchi? I saw a couple of episodes of Acchi Kocchi and it was fairly entertaining. Target demographic seemed like it was for preteens, though. Well-done show, regardless. Was it the story that made it depressing, or are you just saying it's kind of bad? Quote
technoblue Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Just adding another opinion to the mix: Now and Then, Here and There I would say it was the story that got depressing. For most of the series, Shu's character is the only bright light. However, that changes in the resolution. Overall, I enjoyed the series. It reminded me of Lord of the Flies, but most of the adults the characters encounter in NtHt are corrupt. Quote
DuelGundam2099 Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Yesterday I watched a couple of one shot OVAs because I could. The first was Cosmo Police Justy, which looks EXACTLY like Macross (same designers?), I thought it was pretty friggin' cool. The second was some parody mecha called Del Power X, kind of amusing and silly, the mechs were also sort of neat. Quote

No, it's "Ima, Soku ni Iru Boku." Definitely NOT for preteens. Child soldiers, abduction, government-sanctioned rape, genocide, smashing cats with bare hands... it's all there. Quote
Archer Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Finished Clannad and Clannad After Story. Oh my, what a show! I'm NOT a big fan of slice of life anime, but I don't think I've ever been that touched by a show. It's just so grounded in actual life, and being a college student right now (going through that transition into the real world), that it soars as a show in my book. I rarely cry during shows, and I held it in for all the episodes until the second to last one, where Tomoya talks to his dad. Couldn't stop the tears, no matter how hard I tried What a beautiful show. Everyone needs to go check this out if you haven't, it'll bring out feelings you didn't think you had. Also, upon a friend's recommendation, I'll be moving on to Kanon, also by the same studio Quote

Loved the show nonetheless because it's very thought provoking and I gotta give props to Shu and King Hamdo's Japanese VAs who did an exceptional job, but God damn if it's not a very bleak narrative. The art and animation is top notch and some of the stories are indeed very touching, but after a while it get's kind of repetitive IMO and at some point it really felt like 'tragedy porn' to me. It felt like they were consciously making this series and thinking: "yeah and this point is when X does this and everyone cries". Actually it's interesting that you bring up the meeting between Tomoya and his dad, because to me, that's the single most important of all of the relationships in the series and Tomoya getting to experience and understand how his father became the way he was, was indeed a very valuable lesson for him and beautifully written. If it had ended with Tomoya as a single dad being supported by friends and family and not repeating the mistakes of his father, then I would have another opinion, but I felt the ending was such a terrible cop out that it really lessened the appreciation I had of it. It just ended with the restart button and no lessons were learnt. Edited September 19, 2013 by Marzan Quote
Keith Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Disagree about the no lessons thing, and as for the way the ending was handled, probably true to the nature of dating sims. Quote

Clannad is a prime example of the bishoujo game sub-genre "nakige" (ie. make you cry game). So yes, you could say the story is intentionally designed to make you cry. Quote
