I started Solo Leveling,  seems ok so far I am only 3 episodes in so 4 more to go to get current.     Also wanted to mention Sasaki to Pii-chan  at first did not know what to think,  but lately I caught up and I am enjoying it.

If there's a silver lining to having caught the flu, I guess it means that I get to marathon my way through a whole bunch of stuff in my backlog.

Metallic Rouge's latest episode finally decides to try its hand at explaining what the hell is actually going on in the story. It's a shame that they waited until the series was half over before bothering with any proper exposition, but we get some decent explanations about what's been going on and why.

Spoiler

The Immortal Nine are the prototype Neans who were created using alien technology for a war against an invading alien race. They are divided into two separate camps, a group that just wants to live peaceably and a larger group that is seeking to free the Neans from human control and from Asimov's three laws of robotics and possibly to become independent of or even destroy the human race.

It seems that much of the advanced technology in the setting is derived from the technology of the benevolent alien visitors who preceded the invaders, including the technology being used to terraform Venus by recomposing its atmosphere and using a dozen artificial black holes to move Venus to Earth's orbit. Instead of being set in the far future, this post cyberpunk story is set in 2128.

Watched a few more episodes of Keijo!!!!!!!! while laid up in bed with the flu... and I am not for one second buying the argument that this is meant to be just a sports anime/manga parody and not an excuse plot wrapped around the original manga author's weirdly specific fetishes.  There's just too much here that's played up in a blatantly sexual way.

Started Dungeon Meal today...

This sh*t's legitimately wild.  One part comedy-themed dungeon crawl, one part borderline infotainment cooking show as a party of extremely strange people attempt to live off the land while on a rescue mission deep inside a magical dungeon complex.  I was curious just from the premise alone when I read about it but the presentation here is SO GOOD.  It is seamlessly switching from the most off-the-wall nonsense to playing its premise straight to playing its premise laser straight for comedy and it works so well.  I was hooked in just five minutes and I can tell this is gonna be the one I remember from this season.

It's almost surreal in a way.  I'm only on the second episode right now, and in the space of barely a minute they've transitioned effortlessly from fighting a basilisk to worrying about poison from basilisk wounds to... rotisserie roasting the deceased basilisk like a giant chicken.  (And yes, the basilisk really does taste like chicken according to the cast...)

That one is on my "maybe" list.  Maybe I'll give it a go when time allows.  Currently enjoying Apothecary Diaries & 7th Time Loop.  :good:

Binged through the first 24 episodes of Frieren and it’s great.

On the other hand I tried to get into Shield Hero season 3 and I'm having a hard time keeping my attention.

The first season was great but there seems to be no plot progression forward. Just the four heroes fighting with Naofumi. We had that in season 1 can’t we resolve that now?

I guess it was harmful in the long run to waste season 2 like that. I feel like I don’t know what the goal of the show is any more. Is it to fight the waves, the mystical animals, what is up with the heroes from the other dimension?

Better stop watching after season 1.

Nope.

It's a problem with the source material.  The Rising of the Shield Hero web novel and light novel sold itself as the underdog story of a unwilling isekai hero who lost the superpower lottery and ended up hated by the people he was destined to save due to false accusations of criminal conduct.  The ending of the first major story arc is undeniably satisfying but also incredibly counterproductive because it completely undermines the story's entire premise.  Naofumi reveals that he is far and away the most powerful of the Four Heroes and that the Shield is actually at least as OP as the other weapons once you know how to use it, and the Queen conveniently returns and not only clears his name for him but removes everyone opposing him from power.  It's a satisfying ending that unfortunately also completely changes the shape of the story going forward.

The Rising of the Shield Hero was a breakout hit because it followed the same approach the other breakout hit isekai titles did: it subverted the genre's tropes and expectations.  It stops being a subversion after that arc ends, and it feels like the writer had a serious "oh no" moment when they realized everything that made the story popular was now gone.  It feels like the only reason the other three of the Four Heroes continue resenting and avoiding Naofumi is that someone has to in order to create drama and avoid Naofumi being a hero with universally good publicity.

Nah, season two was pretty faithful to the source material like season one was.

The issue is that the series basically jumps the shark at the end of the story arc season one finishes on.

It does a lot of pointless messing about before returning to the same villain from the start and doing it all over again... twice.

Going to be watching Space Runaway Ideon, as I've heard a lot about it (most harrowingly depressing in nature) and decided to see what its' about.

Well, it is a Yoshiyuki Tomino series, so at least you know what you're getting yourself into.

Quite literally.

Not a series I would recommend for the average anime fan but an experience either way.

Yeah... Space Runaway Ideon was Tomino's first new project after finishing the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, and it's ever bit the relentlessly grim war-is-hell misery porn you'd expect from "Kill 'em all" Tomino.

If anything, it's easily some of the darkest - if not THE darkest - work Tomino has ever been responsible for.

Spoiler

Darker even than Victory Gundam's misery porn, the implications of Turn A Gundam's Black History, or the late UC total societal collapse and widespread cannibalism found in the Reconguista in G backstory.  Even the relatively depressing hopeless future of Heavy Metal L-Gaim and its cocreator spinoff Five Star Stories is vastly more cheerful.

So much so that it's credited by Hideaki Anno as a primary inspiration for Neon Genesis Evangelion's own hopeless story.

It will forcibly remind you why Tomino's nickname is "Kill 'em all".

This season's offerings are pretty meh still.

We're well past the halfway point and out of the 20 or so titles I'm currently following the only ones that I can say I'm actually enjoying are MashleDungeon Meals, and to a lesser extent The Witch and the Beast.

Mashle is losing some steam as it pivots to a greater scope conflict between Easton Magic Academy and the setting's Voldemort-equivalent "Innocent Zero".  It's still lots of fun and very much a tongue-in-cheek Harry Potter parody, but it feels like it's running out of things to do with the premise a bit.

The Witch and the Beast is definitely bogging down in Witch Hunter Robin-type shenanigans, with the current mini-arc being an Idiot Plot that only works because everyone involved is unwilling to do any critical thinking at all.  (Lampshading the fact that everyone except the main cast is a moron doesn't make it less of an Idiot Plot though.)  It's especially bad as the villain of the piece is so Obviously Evil that he might as well be wearing a sandwich board that says "SERIOUSLY EVIL DUDE HERE" and singing a little song about how much he enjoys framing people for murder and kicking puppies.  It makes the surprise from everyone else in response to his sudden yet inevitable betrayal feel a bit... silly?  Stupid?  Totally unbelievable?  It's like having someone named Back Stabbington start measuring your back for the explicitly stated purpose of finding the best place to stick a knife and then acting surprised when he shanks you.  If you telegraph the plot twist that hard, it stops being a plot twist.

Banished from the Hero's Party S2 is flat and lifeless.  Villainess Level 99 is pretty much form letter overpowered isekai protagonist comedy nonsense that isn't really funny.  Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable is kind of tedious generic romcom stuff, as is The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil.

'Tis Time for Torture, Princess is almost unbearably tedious with its one and only joke.  Villain-san's Day Off is cute but toothless for similar reasons.  The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids feels like even the studio has given up as the animation quality continues to plummet and its story is clearly flailing for something interesting to do.  Blue Exorcist is just a big mess because of the part of the source material they're adapting.  The Unwanted Undead Adventurer is just kind of messing about with the same premise half a dozen other titles already did better (e.g. OverlordSkeleton Knight, etc.).  Metallic Rouge is halfheartedly trying to be Blade Runner and Android Kikaider at the same time.  The Wrong Way to use Healing Magic is also pretty lifeless and uninspired.  Bang Brave Bang Bravern is still just painful to look at because it won't pick a lane and wants to be both serious and a parody, though it's leaning more and more towards parody.

A Sign of Affection, which was previously one of my standouts for the season, lost a lot of its appeal because they didn't even make it half the season before the two main characters officially became a couple and sucked half the tension and interest out of the story.  It's still cute and interesting but it feels less invested in its own premise now.

I really hope we're headed towards the end of the tyranny of isekai stories.  Much like superhero stories in western media, isekai stories have really worn out their welcome and what little novelty their premise had.  We got a couple really good stories out of it, and a whole lot of mediocre trash, but it's time to let it go and move on to the next thing.

Okay... 14 episodes into this series (been binging this since 8 am with a break for lunch), and yup...

... "Kill 'em all" definitely fits Tomino.

On that note though, I saw the following part in episode 16 (spoilered because it's pretty dark):

Spoiler

My reaction was pretty inappropriate, given what just happened in that part (maybe a defense mechanism due to the shocking and cruel deaths), but:

Spoiler

I started laughing at the screams from the Ideon mecha because they sounded to me like the Ideon was constipated and straining on the toilet!!!

Yeah, I got pretty upset at myself for that... people just died in very violent and cruel ways a few moments ago. The screaming from Cosmo was very understandable, given what just took place.

Sometimes I really  wonder about myself. 😠

Once I collected myself ( and felt like an absolute jackass for laughing at the roaring), it struck me just how dark this series is getting, and this is 16 out of 39 episodes. I think I may not be able to finish the series...we'll have to see.

Going to watch a few more today and then pick up tomorrow when I can, if I can stand seeing more of this. I may bail out on it. :(

Yeah, Yoshiyuki Tomino was in a dark, dark place when he made Space Runaway Ideon.

If I'd known your intention was to binge the series, I'd have warned you against it.  Ideon is best taken in small doses because of how unstintingly bleak it is... and the movie version is worse.

Yeah, that's my fault. I wasn't going to originally, but it was a rainy gloomy day and I had nothing else to do (waiting on packages so I can continue my projects), so it was kinda last minute.

Shot myself in the foot there.

Anyhow, not really sure I'd want to finish it at the rate it's going, small doses or not. This series makes all the dark parts of Macross look like a bright, cheery day. Kind of surprised Tomino wasn't hospitalized in a mental institution after this series due to his family's concerns for his psychological well-being! O.o

Definitely finish it, but as said above, small doses. No more than two episodes at a time and then watch something happy afterwards. And definitely not on a gloomy rainy day

Ah, yeah... Tomino-sensei has had more than a few moments in his career that've left me thinking that he was definitely NOT all right when he made them.

Even his brighter and more upbeat work has a lot of darkness hiding just beneath the surface.  Like Gundam: Reconguista in G, where several characters have to deal with lingering caste-based discrimination despite centuries of peace and prosperity because their ancestors were...

Spoiler

... lower class people who were designated as emergency food for upper class people during the widespread famines brought about by environmental destruction near the end of the Universal Century.

The bright, happy, generally peaceful and harmonious future of the Reguild Century was built on the ruins of a Universal Century where mankind's self-destructive impulses ruined the planet so completely that humans fell back on institutionalized cannibalism to survive... then discriminated against the descendants of their victims for centuries.

Speaking of awful futures... Metallic Rouge has once again stumbled through some awful exposition in its latest episode.

It really is embarrassing how poorly paced and composed this series is.  It's oddly impressive how uninteresting Studio Bones managed to make a series about Rockman X-style sentient androids fighting each other because one side wants to instigate a robot uprising.

Spoiler

This most recent episode sidestepped most of the exposition they dumped in the previous two... with the fight in the Aletheia building ending abruptly when the Immortal Nine decide they've gotten bored and leave without completing their objective despite having Rouge outnumbered four to one, Rouge fighting and defeating her previously unmentioned evil blue twin, and her "brother" getting kidnapped.

The rest of the episode changes gears with an almost audible clunk and decides to exposition dump about the aliens.  Rouge visits a Visitor space city in orbit of Earth and actually meets three of them.  Not coincidentally, they look like the Proto-Nean gladiator forms but about twenty feet tall and vaguely mermaid-ish.  We also get the rather pointless reveal that Naomi is ALSO a Nean... a Nean made by the Visitors to interface with Humans directly.

The writers then completely forget about this revenge plot that's been driving the series so far, and now the Immortal Nine are either working with or being used by the Usurpers (bad aliens) in order to cause a robot uprising because that'll enable the Usurpers to declare a new war on the Visitors and Humanity and win.  The real reason behind the conflict is apparently the planet Venus.  Humanity is terraforming it as part of a deal with the Visitors.  The Visitors give humanity their overtechnology and Humanity terraforms Venus for them so they can live there.  The Usurpers want to claim the terraformed Venus for themselves.

The whole thing is just such a massive arse-pull that it completely fails to land... and leaves this ridiculous Rockman X-ing the show's been doing up to this point feeling like far and away the least interesting part of the setting.

Meantime, I tried watching one more episode of Ideon and just had to abort the entire thing. Going to be avoiding Tomino's work in the future, as it's not good for my mental or emotional health.

Wasn’t there a Gundam crossover animated short with Hello Kitty. I don’t remember half the Sanrio characters dying off, so Tomino probably wasn’t involved.

Bandai was probably all jazzed up about the project until someone mentioned it to Tomino. After hearing his pitch, they decided not to invite him to any more meetings regarding the subject

Not an uncommon reaction to Space Runaway Ideon, truth be told.

It didn't exactly go over great with audiences when it was new either, though Tomino's made noises about wanting to remake the whole bloody thing.  It got truncated by cancellation in its original broadcast run, so the ending was a rushed affair.

It certainly feels that way.

Something about a studio deciding to do an original sci-fi/action series for a major anniversary seems to bring out the absolute worst writers imaginable.  Studio Bones has done lots of great work in its 25 years and counting, and it actually came as a bit of a shock to me that Metallic Rouge was an original IP by them because it's so incredibly underdeveloped and so badly written.  When Tatsunoko Production decided to do a original IP mecha anime for their 55th anniversary I expected it wouldn't be very good but I wasn't expecting they'd just go and make the worst series they'd produced since Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross.  Imagine a sci-fi story so badly written that the only way its plot can function at all is to have Humanity at the level of interstellar travel and planet-scale terraforming forget that Conservation of Energy is a thing.  Studio Bones's Metallic Rouge is nearly as problematic in that it's a conflicting jumble of cyberpunk cliches without any real cohesion and that its writers don't seem to understand that exposition is something a story does have to do every so often so the audience knows what's going on.

Hoping for more from today's The Witch and the BeastThe Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic, and The Unwanted Undead Adventurer.

(HiDive went and released a new version of their app that is hilariously broken... it's way more full-featured than their previous bare-bones offering but they can't even get the subtitle streams working.)

Posted

The Unwanted Undead Adventurer's latest episode is a breather one.  It's rather amusing in an undignified sort of way to see Rentt bested by a

Spoiler

... hedge maze after a lifetime of adventuring in labyrinths and soloing a tarrasque in the previous episode.

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic brought another pretty unremarkable episode.  The story really has yet to do anything to stand out in either a good or a bad way.  Even the big bad of the current part of the story is nothing more than a standard Dark Knight whose special ability is the equally standard...

Spoiler

... "reflect damage".

The Witch and the Beast is three quarters of the way into a four-parter "The Witch and the Demon Sword".  It's definitely the weakest story the series has brought so far, not helped by the fact that the twist was telegraphed so heavily it failed to surprise even a little.

Spoiler

The obviously evil Man in Black who was working with the Paladins in the shadows was, in fact, exactly as evil as he looked and his endgame was to frame the witch who owns the demon sword to get his hands on the demon sword.  He then spends something like five entire minutes of the episode monologuing about it while everyone just watches and generally being as arbitrarily evil as he can for no clear reason.

We don't even really get a clear motivation for what he's doing other than ruthless will-to-power before...

Spoiler

... he learns the hard way that he can't actually control the Demon Sword the way he thought he could because the forbidden artifact he's using to mind control all the Paladins won't work on it because magic that produces respect for, and deference to, authority doesn't work on something that isn't capable of rational thought.

This season's been a bit of a bust, all in all.  Dungeon Meals is still pretty darn good tho.

Going backwards a bit to watch The Ancient Magus's Bride while I recover from dental surgery... I've heard that one is rather good.

To recover, I'm going to be watching Hello Kitty's Furry Time Theater for a while.

And to be frank: "bloody" is putting it mildly when it comes to Ideon. Literally, the mech itself is blood red. That should have been my first clue.

Nope... Metallic Rouge was written by Yutaka Izubuchi and Toshizo Nemoto.

Izubuchi's principally a mechanical and character designer with a lot of iconic titles on his CV including Gundam 0080 and Gundam ZZ, the Patlabor movies, and Yamato 2199.  Nemoto's a writer whose filmography is less impressive but still contains some major titles like Legend of Galactic Heroes and Macross Delta.

How it ended up such a complete and total cluster**** is anyone's guess.

Villain-san's Day Off had an entire episode bereft of the titular character, focused on Valentine's Day and White Day.

7th Time Loop's story is regaining a bit of its sense of direction, though toward what end I have no idea.  Things are happening and the protagonist clearly knows what they are, but she's really cluing the rest of us in because she's too busy doing a Sweet Polly Oliver for some reason.

Banished from the Hero's Party is still stumbling towards a conclusion as Rud tries (and largely fails) to convince the new alleged Hero to be less of a Lawful Stupid Paladin.

The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids forgot a chunk of its own premise for a bit WRT Homunculi, and has started building up towards a second season I'd suspect it's not getting... with some fuss and noise about a Demon King named Greed who's apparently driving research into Homunculi for military use in the neighboring kingdom.

Blue Exorcist stumbled to the more-or-less end of the Shimane Illuminati arc with the defeat of Dr. Gedouin, though the resolution is every bit as weak as I remember from the manga given that it's essentially a triple deus ex machina...

Spoiler

... with Izumo's mother coming back to life to take the ninetails back and immediately die with it, Izumo's familiars not having been destroyed after all, and then three entire branches of the True Cross Order showing up to save them at the last minute having apparently resolved the entire rest of the plot offscreen.

Mashle's still as over-the-top as you'd expect from its premise being Harry Potter by way of One Punch Man.  Honestly, the disrespect Mash has for his opponents is real and they are taking it personally.  It's actually pretty funny seeing him trolling opponents who think they have the upper hand.  (Even if the idea that Mash's insane physical ability isn't magic now wears a little thin.)
