Those came with the white gunpod. One of my favorite VF-1 decos ever.

Yeah, those white gunpods are cool! I really like the Low Vis. It has some pretty "special" things about it.

Soon we get to see how well I can match the weathering........:shok:

Now to get some water slides and practice weathering. The SSP's on the Fighter are all screwed up. They were really brittle and didn't work out so great. All of the arm armor tabs popped off and one of the boosters has a crack. I guess I'll practice weathering on this set and when I get it down paint an undamaged set.

I need to figure out how to paint the four missile doors in the front of the FP black and make it look nice. That's a tricky one.

Can't wait for the Camo Low Vis to show up!

Amazing shot. Did you remove the middle filler pieces of your set to shine more light through or is something else going on? If so, it seems like a great idea I may have to emulate. Do you leave the ceiling tiles on to disperse the light or are you ceiling free to get more light in?

Really nice!

Did the tabs and boosters crack cause by the paint or painting process? I am curious if the agressive solvent in the paint can cause this kind of problem.

The missile doors can be masked quite easily if you have some masking tape hanging around. The modeling type have low tack so will not lift paint when time come to remove them. But if you don't have those, the normal hardware store type can also work. Just stick it on some surface and remove them a few time to reduce the tack. And don't leave them on the painted plastic for too long.

Thanks!!!  I'm a designer/development engineer focused mostly on motorsports so this is really far outside my wheelhouse. Not much I do has color. And if it does, it's anodizing. It's a challenge I like. I'm hoping to keep improving my skills.

That was my first thought too. Previously I had done two sets of packs in different colors and didn't have any issues so I wasn't really convinced it was the process. The only difference with this set of packs was the color. Same brand paint, same prep process, etc. I rolled the dice and grabbed another set of arm armors and repeated the same process. No tab breakage. I think the set of SSP's I had were stored somewhere with a weird environment or something. Overall they were not as pliable as the other sets I had messed with. And someone at Bandai got real happy with the glue on this set too. They were much harder to dissemble. The set is pretty much junk at this point. I'm going to use them to practice panel lining and weathering. Once I have that dialed I'll paint another set with my hopefully newly developed skills.

I've got some Tamayia masking tape in a few flavors. I was thinking that was going to be my best move. The trick is hitting the radius's correctly without cutting into the plastic. I'm going to have to get a good knife, maybe a magnifying glass arm mounted thing and hope my hands are steady enough. Since the set that is on the Fighter is pretty junky and has been promoted to test fodder I'll practice on those.

Now to get some custom water slides. I messaged @Anasazi37 to see if he could hook me up with what I need. Fingers crossed. I don't know of any other sources.

Thanks for the tips!:good:

Those are his custom translucent filler parts and I'm pretty sure he takes advantage of how well the top parts disperse lights for his photos in these backdrops.

Such a large and spacious hangar! I'm going to need some more FEXT scifi sets because mine is small and cramped with only 2x sets.

As an aside, my FEXT hangar is a favorite camping spot for my cat when not in use. :unknw:

Masking tape is your friend. The Tamiya tape is excellent. Don't use standard masking tape.

Are you laying that tape down and then trimming the edges with a exacto knife?

Thanks!

@jenius Thank you!

The middle pieces, I am guessing you are talking about that walls?  If so FEXT provided me with custom translucent pieces for the middle/wall connectors.  For ceiling tiles I leave them to help diffuse the light.

Thank you @Rogueload, this hangar is a custom, I designed the graphics for it and FEXT made it for me.

@sqidd that's some great paint work dude. For someone who says he doesn't do much with color I think you did a great job matching up the low-vis grey!

@Saburo love it, but I think you're missing a Queadluun Rare. How about a 1/60 Yamato stand-in?

@sqidd your Strike Parts on the Low Vis VF-1A are looking good. I have been wanting to do this to mine for awhile but have yet to get around to it. Was waiting until I get an airbrush but some quality hobby spray paint looks to work just fine.

Funny you should mention the breaking Super/Strike parts. The last two 1/48 S/S sets I bought had this problem too. They were a bit more green in color than my good sets, and some of the pegs snapped off when I tried to gently install them; arm tabs and the pegs for the leg parts too. Hoping I can make one good set out of the two.

Now I am a little hesitant to buy any more. Not sure how many sets floating around out there have aged poorly

Posted

Yeah the plastics of Yamato’s 1/48 & equivalent generation of valks doesn’t seem to have aged that well today. They don’t discolour that easily, yet seem to slowly become brittle over time. But to be fair they have quite a number of years in them by now.

One of my landing gear door hinges broke last year just from trying to open it. Like others above, another had the super parts peg breaking just from normal installation.

Still, not too bothered as they will essentially stay in fighter mode for most of their remaining lives..

So, I left my 1/48 Max up in the attic for the past seven years (no place to display it . . . until now!).  It was kept in its original box, away from sunlight but left to the mercies of California temperature variations.  I was worried it would be yellowed all to hell.

It wasn't too badly yellowed:

1469973772_FadedMaxFighter.JPG.df9e82d4c1e6f681ca87f2eb8f6d5eeb.JPG

But then I flipped it over. . . .  whoops!

28818507_FadedMaxUnderFighter.JPG.1b8ed7650294bbfa36df937073e1a648.JPG

It's even more noticeable in battroid:

How she originally looked 8+(?) years ago:

gallery_3595_265_63714.jpg

I'm kinda surprised the blue in the arms, hips, and head changed to practically teal.  Would've thought the white would be the color most impacted by the temperature changes.

At least I have some blue paints that are a close match.
