MechTech Posted March 18 Posted March 18 I'm glad you're going to a model show! They are tough competition, but really A LOT of fun! Great place to get stuff at good prices, awesome selection, and cool to meet with people. AND if you win anything a bonus! If not, a lesson learned. Don't be besides yourself at the show, people will think you're weird!🤣 - MT Quote

pengbuzz Posted March 18 Posted March 18 (edited) UPDATE: After a disaster trying to mount a front windshield to Airwolf, I'm taking a break from the project to clear my head. Working with ancient plastic and diecast is no treat, so I could use some distance from that one before I go back in to finish things. Meantime, came across this dirt cheap: Really want to build this, but I want to replace the saucer section and warp nacelles with ones from a 1/537 Refit kit. This way, it looks in continuity with the Refit on display (the thickness of the saucer is lacking and the warp nacelles just don't look the same as they do on the refit). Going to have to see who might have them, but eBay is being ridiculous about now, and I don't need a full kit! Edited March 19 by pengbuzz Quote

Some pics: https://federationmodels.com/ Go to Products, then Federation Models; about halfway down you'll find a Miranda Class Saucer Correction Kit (only $15.00). Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything for the nacelles but I did not look too hard, so they may have something that would fit the bill. Edit: They're even running a half off sale at the moment. And Lois (although I'm still trying to capture Margot Kidder's likeness and can't quite get it): Stay tuned... Edited March 19 by pengbuzz added info and pics Quote

And yeah: just waiting on more Plastic Welder (next Wednesday) to continue that project. I still need to make the windshield for it (no idea how to do that just yet!) and seal up the cockpit before painting. Also still waffling on doing attachable weapons on it. Meantime, my parts for Reliant should be in this morning; I've already done some modifications to the warp nacelles to make them look more like the Refit's (they originally had a "belly" on the bottom, the Bussards were shaped wrong and a few details were lost in sanding and needed replacement). Also: 3 Tomcats still in the works (1/72 VF-1 Wolfpack, Top Gun [Maverick's plane pre-crash], and VF-142 Black Lions), a 1/72 Hasegawa VF-1 Valkyrie (Millia's, but will be repainted to VF-33 Starfighters) with a custom flight deck catapult diorama, a new blade for my Voltron's Blazing Sword (made out of aluminum, once I can find an appropriate piece of the right thickness and length/ width that won't break my wallet!) ... ...and a new set of nerves for my old, poor shot ones! Speaking of projects: I almost forgot to post the pics of the Thuverl-Salan Class ship I scratch-built some time back- Yeah... it needs some work still (antenna, weapons emplacements, etc). Got burned out on this (kept thinking green turd); I'll have to come back to it sometime. Stay tuned folks.... Edited March 22 by pengbuzz Quote

And that 'organic' look is essential to their appearance. Breetai's flagship is going to be massive! Good to hear about all the projects still in the works. And as to the cockpit of Airwolf have you tried plunge molding? Thom Quote

Thom Not sure what "plunge molding" is; I do know the "heat and smash" technique (heat plastic, pull over buck), but I would have to carve a buck for the canopy and I don't have a lot of luck getting proportions right. Basically the same thing. Do you still gave the canopy 'glass' that it came with? I know in the first pic it looks tinted, but you could use it as a master to make a buck or maybe to trace out the shape onto new clear plastic. Edited March 22 by Thom Quote

I know in the first pic it looks tinted, but you could use it as a master to make a buck or maybe to trace out the shape onto new clear plastic. It's actually solid black plastic (the soft kind, polypropylene), and it is recessed from the surface. The actual Bell 222's windows are flush with the surface. Also, my heat gun died 6 months ago so I have no real way to heat the plastic (cannot use the stove as it has an automatic feature to turn off the burners with no pots or pans on them). :( Quote

I’m curious about trying an odd kitbash between one of those and the wave kit. It would definitely be ditching a lot of parts and not sure if it would end up worth all the cutting, sanding and awkwardness. But I am oddly curious Quote

Urashiman Posted March 23 Author Posted March 23 @pengbuzz ah a classic pengbuzz tape model! Awesome! I decided to purchase SUNLU high toughness resin, thinking I would get my prints to be a bit more less brittle. It is awesome. I can throw my print around and it doesn’t break… but… well… I smashed everything I could on the build plate of my VF-9. and also printed an army of Milias. And you can throw them around because the stuff basically is liquid rubber. Can be bent around like crazy and doesn’t break. Here two additional pictures for your convenience. Quote
Thom Posted March 23 Posted March 23 @Urashiman Great that they won't break, but how will it do under paint? I imagine you might get a lot of flaking. Quote
