As for alternate schemes, maybe you could do a 'space proving wing' or a factory fresh unpainted. Or one of the trainers from Delta or a Tiger Meet scheme. I do like this one. You‘ll laugh, but I actually considered the Macross The First VF-1 as well. I wanted to either go super clean or heavily weathered with a blue and white scheme. I remembered there to be some VF-1‘s flying in the Macross 7 Dynamite intro, which always intrigued me. Kinda looked like this but with way more white. I‘d do that with heavy weathering and ordinance. I was also thinking about the pink/purple minmay guard scheme, as well as the blue one here which looks pretty awesome: And then, of course the first production rollout model: these would all be clean builds. derex3592 Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Never ever built any armor before. Looking forward to this and eventually an M1A1 Abrams. Added to the stash! 😁 Quote

If you’re doing things as late as Macross 7, it might be cool to do one in a diorama depicting an older one found that had been left out to rust, but being rebuilt and in the process of going from old worn or even damaged parts to having almost brand new parts in strategic places Quote

But you are right, by the time of Macross D7 the VF-1‘s are really old, so heavy weathered VF-1‘s are out there. Here are some screen caps from the intro: and in macross D7 they have the commercial Valkyrie, VT-1C aswell. @Thom yeah, the minmay one is my fav so far. Quote
pengbuzz Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Hey folks, just settling in from moving (more like recovering from the move from hell). While I was sitting down tonight (legs hurt like all get-out, back on fire and all my old injuries screaming in agony), I found 4 model kits (2 F-4's and 2 F-16's, all in 1/72, donated by a couple of friends) that I didn't know what to do with.... Well, I began gluing things together and not following any plan other than "ad-libbing" as I went. The result so far: I don't know what this will be just yet; I know it's nothing to do with Macross or any other franchise I know. Just going to keep cobbling this together and see where it leads. I do know it will be some kind of long-range fighter/ interceptor type of craft that operates primarily in space. May do a story for it when finished, don't know just yet. All I know about it is that it's made from 4 different kits. O.o Stay tuned... Quote

Urashiman Posted October 8, 2023 Author Posted October 8, 2023 Some VF-9 stuff again. I decided to do a test print of the fixed parts with "3D" RCS. In my ultimate wisdom, I decided to print them in white resin... which kinda is bad to actually notice any significant details. As my wisdom is endless, I then decided it would be a good idea to use Tamiya panel line accent color, only to find out, it will be sucked up by the fine lines of the print layers ... duh. but here, have some pictures. Old v1 prototype print versus new one. As you can see I had my fun with the old print here and there. I have to prime the second test print and then panel line it, just to check how it looks. Quote

Urashiman Posted October 9, 2023 Author Posted October 9, 2023 @Gabe Q It is decided then. The blue Paris Show Minmay Guard scheme it will be. @Big s Yeah, but that'll be a really bad tire profile from last century then hahahah. Quote
MechTech Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 @pengbuzz I'm glad you finally got moved in! Keep going with the building ideas - you never know what will turn up! @Urashiman Your print looks fantastic! I JUST got a bottle of the Tamiya panel liner this weekend. I have yo get used to how it works and reacts to stuff. NEARLY - BUT NOT completely finished with the turret display. Here's some photos... I needed 4mm nuts angled correctly for the shell to have a nice display look. So two were machined. The rear of the projectile is "boat tailed", so it had to have a different angle too - of course!🥲 Openings were carefully made that the nuts fit into with superglue. I noticed the stand parts floated around the threaded rods, so spacers were made keep everything uniform too. I mapped out the oak board to make the stand out of. Then cut the stand out and made sure everything fir together. The problem with dynamic poses is that they make dynamic fit problems too😉 Routing this with a Roman Ogee was crazy, but you see what a difference it makes. Radio Shack had a COOL safety switch! But the actual switch was too big to fit into the base (of course), so I found a smaller one, and made spacers so it would work with it. Then the name / data plate was cut and milled out, along with the base to fit the wires in. Then I got everything together JUST IN TIME for the convention this weekend. The best way to say it, God helped me get things together at an incredible rate! I STILL need to add details to the build. I'll update as I get them done along with video of it running. Thanks for checking it out! - MT Quote

Sometimes it works like magic other times it eats paint , other times it makes abs brittle and sometimes it just melts what it touches. Most of the time it’s ok though Quote
Chas Posted October 10, 2023 Posted October 10, 2023 Beautiful display Mechtech. Looks like it belongs in a museum - very professional! Another stalled build off the backlog. Started this one a while ago, but had some paint reaction nonsense, so I put it aside. Nothing special build-wise pretty much straight out-of-box (just some very small changes). It's Academy's re-imagined God Phoenix from Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. Wanted to get this done 'cus, while there are things I like about the redesign, I've always wanted a model of 'the real thing', so I ordered one of the Wave kits that came out just after this Academy was issued. Anyway couple of quick pics. Quote

electric indigo Posted October 10, 2023 Posted October 10, 2023 Outdoor shots with more stuff added, I hope the next pics will show the completed kit. Quote
MechTech Posted October 10, 2023 Posted October 10, 2023 @Big s Thanks for the heads up! I've heard about the reactions. Now that I read the contents, I understand better why. It works awesome though! Tried it on some resin parts. @Chas Thank you, I appreciate it! LOVE to see your Phoenix build! I didn't watch it eating sugary cereal, but I tried to make one out of wood. Imagine a kid flying around 30lbs (guessing) of lumber! Probably my first scratch build too🤣 @electric indigo After doing A LOT of judging at the show this past weekend, I would DEFINITELY class your model (so far) as a GOLD winner! - MT Quote

pengbuzz Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Progress on the ...well, whatever I think to call this one eventually: I threw some prime on it to give me a better basis on how to proceed with it; the multi-tone look was giving me migraines. 505thAirborne Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 (edited) The skills & talent I am seeing here is impressive, looking good everyone!!! I got this beast in yesterday, so far a relatively easy build, the cockpit has the most parts. I'm going to order the White metal landing gear & a decal sheet for this kit. The kit overall is of good quality, so far, every test fits correctly. My biggest issue so far are the decals, they are not even remotely correct for what was used during the ATF project, no Northrop/McDonnell/Douglas, ATF or even YF-23 decals... plus NO Pilot, so for the price tag that's a bummer. The plus side is the kit actually has some heft to it and she measures just over 17 inches long. Edited October 12, 2023 by 505thAirborne Quote
Chronocidal Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Ooh nice! I saw that one pop up on the market long ago, is it still being produced? But yeah, looking like they did markings for a theoretical production model on that one, based in Florida, if I remember my tailcodes correctly. I'm getting to the point where I can appreciate the smaller kits a lot more. I grew up loving 1/48th for all the nice details, but 1/72 is a whole lot easier find room for. Quote

Honestly, I'm not sure if they're still in actual production anymore. As for 1/72 scale, I kind of miss that scale for these Fighters. This thing dwarfs my 1/60 Yamato VF-0S! Quote

Most if not all YF-23 kits are based off of the dragon mold from 1991ish. Quote
Thom Posted October 13, 2023 Posted October 13, 2023 Will be nice seeing that fall together @505thAirborne. Nice choice. Getting close to the finish on the Asuka. I got a gloss coat down and a panel line wash done, and starting to put things together. Tomorrow I'll start decalling and then give it a flat finish. Will be nice to get her finished. Thom Quote

I know my dad has an Italeri one from the same timeframe, and it definitely was a different mold. You know what's actually wild though? This thing. I've seen at least four or five separate packaging versions of this same toy, all different companies. It's absolutely a toy (in HMR scale, amusingly enough), with simple retractable gear, but it's honestly not a bad little display model. I picked one up in 2003, in Disneyland of all places, for about $6. I keep that one on my desk at work. Also, just looked, looks like the Hobby Boss kit is still available on Amazon for $55. Quote
Kurt Posted October 13, 2023 Posted October 13, 2023 First armor subject I have done in a long time, actually the first plastic kit for that matter. Not meant to be totally accurate. M1A1 mostly, but added/deleted parts as I saw fit. Still have to work on more stowage and find a crew that I like. Any plastic crew figures I've seen are very soft on the details. Will probably make a diorama of some sort in the future. Maybe along with a JLTV and other figures. Thanks for looking. Quote

What gloss coat did you use? @Kurt That is a BEAUTIFUL (but muddy) M-1! GREAT details including optics glass, shell casings, and links! Nice chipping too! @pengbuzz Your design is looking COOL!!! Thom Posted October 13, 2023 Posted October 13, 2023 (edited) @pengbuzz That fighter is looking wicked! I don't know why, but it is giving me Last Starfighter vibes.🤩 Thanks @MechTech! For gloss, I just used Tamiya rattle-can clear. Probably should have used an enamel over acrylic, but I'm living dangerously. Some pre-decal pics. I can point out the flaws, but I won't!!😛 Edited October 13, 2023 by Thom Quote
