We got one of the movies without seeing the series and almost got lost - but it was funny! @arbit Your Ranka looks good! I think you are on the right track with painting. The only thing that might make your lined areas straighter is decals, but she looks really good! And you printed her. She's not a mass produced kit. @derex3592 OG QRau! The primer is looking smooth! @pengbuzz I always like to see a coat of primer, it helps bring the model together! I've been busy doing graphics, but got a little modeling in this weekend. All of the original bolt detail on the gun had to be filed off to clean up the seems. So I replaced that. Then glued stuff together for "junk" on the diorama. - MT WOW!!! Some serious landscaping there MT!! I get the feeling this one's going to be a show-stopper when you're finished with it! UPDATE: due to an error on my part, I had to tear out the aft section on the space engines for the ES-11 and redo them. it also allowed me to accurize the bottom of the bird's hull a bit better and finally add the Radome pylons: The engine exhausts are still WIP, so they're admittedly pretty rough right now. But this bird is at least taking further shape! Stay tuned while I look for a "dish"... Quote

peter Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Hey guys, thought I would just drop in and say hi. I've been kind of busy lately with work, taking a course I have absolutely zero interest in and its taking me forever to get it into my head, lol! I also had a side job that's been taking up some of my free time so I haven't touched models in ages. Training some cast and extras in a little Japanese swordsmanship for a TV show that's filming in Vancouver. I've never worked in the film industry before, so it's a very interesting experience. Anyway, I'm still alive, but model work is slow. My pathetic Excelsior saw some paint layers, but that's about it: I'll be honest, this build doesn't spark much joy yet.....maybe I'll be more motivated once I get to the decal stage, but we'll see, lol! I don't know if I'm in a rut or what, but I even bought one of those DX 1J GBPs for some instant gratification and it's staring at me while I try to get through this course at work. Anyway, it's awesome to see how much activity there is in this thread, some really amazing work in here! Hope to be back up to speed again soon. Quote
big F Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Its great to see so many builds under way here, especially since I currently cant do any of my own, due to still not having a workshop to build in. so many kits and builds sat there in boxes waiting their turn. How I hate how long our subsidence claim is taking. I just want to build my work shop on the unaffected part of my property, but we are advised not to……… Quote
pengbuzz Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Not much to update, except that I had a narrow window of opportunity to obtain a 1/3000 Matchbox SDF-1 on Ebay ($160)for a relatively cheap price, and just as our money came into the bank... ...someone else bought it. It's raining here and pretty cruddy to boot. Just gonna call it a day and go to bed early. Quote

Even when people are pointing out that they are in such and such a scene, it's always a blink and you'll miss it thing. Quote

wm cheng Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 After 3wks of chores, I finally got through enough of them to start a model (in between jobs - finished 3rd season of The Boys, everyone go see that next year / but I'm especially proud of Foundation I did last year, everyone please see that which is airing NOW!). I'm starting the G.W.H. 1/72 F-15C Eagle (can't wait to place it between my F-14 & F-16). Started a few days ago on the cockpit office with Quickboost Resin seat (not really recommended - had to scratch build the ejection rails) and Eduard Photo-etched set. Quote
electric indigo Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 The rest of the cockpit is not an aftermarket piece? Looks amazing, and of course masterfully painted. Quote

Nicely done! UPDATE: not much...had to rip out the leading edge of the wings and underside (inaccuracies). X-wing model delayed due to USPS being slower than a retarded snail; 1/3000 SDF-1 project cancelled due to lack of base model/toy to work with. At this rate, it'll probably never happen. Now working on a 1:1 scale model of a depressed Pengbuzz (OOB build). Edited October 7, 2021 by pengbuzz Quote
Thom Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 @wm cheng Agreeing with Electric Indigo! Great looking 'pit. And that 1/1 project, you can rebuild him! You have the technology! Quote

Gabe Q Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 @peter It's great to see you posting again! @wm cheng Beautiful work, as always! Loving the tub on that Eagle! Also, I'm really enjoying the Foundation series so far. What is it that you do for the show? @derex3592 Your Q-Rau is looking very nice so far! If you're worried about using really old decals, I recommend the the decal film pictured. It works really well. I used it on my old battroid build a while back where the decals were falling apart as soon as I got them wet. Quote
GMK Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 Got into CAD & 3D printing as my pandemic hobbies. Different way to think, but a useful way of solving kit problems or subject availability. Current project is the 8x8 Boxer combat reconnaissance vehicle slowly being introduced by the Australian Army. Scale will be 1:16. Quote

MechTech Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 @pengbuzz Rebuilding stuff seems to be half of building stuff The shape looks great! @peter I wondered what happened to you. Good progress on your fleet! That's cool how you're teaching swordsmanship. I had a great grandfather who was a Ju-Jitsu champion after spending some time in Japan where he learned it. He then went on to teach it to U.S. troops for WWII and doubled as a voice interceptor and analyst for intelligence. @derex3592 She's a tough old girl, but looks good when complete! If you haven't yet, you may need to let the decals soak for 30 minutes, no kidding! @wm cheng That's a beautiful cockpit and finish! I forgot how many equipment boxes were in the back of F-15c's. Congrats on the film productions! - MT Quote
Urashiman Posted October 9, 2021 Author Posted October 9, 2021 Did a little 4 hour practice today, and decided to do the VF-1. Yes - just another 3d modelled VF-1, but this time I did the VF-1P (which not to many people have done yet). I used line art from the Variable Master File for the VF-1 to make this. and a quick projection mapped render. Quote
MechTech Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 @GMK That is looking good! I haven't seen that turret before. @Urashiman That is looking great! What scale are you planning on making it? - MT Quote
Urashiman Posted October 9, 2021 Author Posted October 9, 2021 @MechTechSo far it is non-scale. Just a little 3D VF-1 study to practice some modelling skills. Nothing specific planned yet. I still have to finish my 1/72 VF-9 Cutlass. That is still on my desk. Not sure if I was posting this here already but here you go. Some VF-9 renders. Quote

MechTech Posted October 10, 2021 Posted October 10, 2021 @Urashiman That Cutlass is looking great! The dimensions look good on it too. The difference between children playing in the sand and adults, adults mix it with glue to make it permanent . So I mixed some sand with a lot of glue and some water to make what you see. Today it seems to be setting up pretty solid. I put everything in the sand to make impressions and then let it dry. Nothing more I can do on it now until it fully sets. Thanks for checking in everyone! - MT Quote

The cockpit and pilot it came with: (yeah, pretty bad...about as bad as I remember) So, some styrene, sanding, gluing and all-out pengbuzzery later: In place with reworked pilot: Some stuff still needs work and adjustment, but I feel this is far closer to the cockpit in ANH. derex3592 Posted October 10, 2021 Posted October 10, 2021 (edited) QRau is finished. Whatever. I know these old 80s kits are what they are, but I still hate them! There, I said it. However, it is my all time favorite Zentradi mecha! Decals almost all went down good. I lost two, not bad for over 30 year old. Again, whatever, it's as finished as it's going to be. No, I didn't weather it because I'm lazy and it's gonna go with my HM-Rs so it'll look like them. I will be the first one in line to buy a new HM-R QRau! This kit is terrible. Avoid it all costs unless you like pain and suffering. Yes, I originally put the thigh assemblies in the wrong leg like 2 years ago and didn't notice until yesterday, so the legs are not right. Again whatever! Movin on. Edited October 10, 2021 by derex3592 Quote

My first Star Wars kit from the early 90s, and I remember all the fuss involved in making that cockpit something more recognizable. I did finally find out the reason for the ugly cockpit a few years back though. As bad as it was for what we saw in the movie, MPC designed that kit completely based on the filming miniatures. After seeing some photos of those once, the stock cockpit really isn't bad for what the filming models had, which was mostly kitbashed from ~1/24 scale car models. If you think about it, the wide-armed pose and full-head helmet really do have a pretty good resemblance to a NASCAR driver. Really though, considering the kit came out in 1978, it still holds up really well. Think it was one of my first kits with engraved panel lines. Quote

Hey @arbit unfortunately now, my software of choice is email/gmail, excel & google sheets being an Supervising Art Director. However, I usually do most of my designs in SketchUp and paper sketches with rendering in Enscape, but now I mostly sketch on a paper napkin or if I have time, SketchUp loosely to sell the ideas to higher ups and then direct the Set Designers or VFX to actually do the "real" design work and occassionally look over their shoulders while they are drafting it up and supervise the actual physical set construction.
