Ah, that engine cover for the MAC II Monster?

Yes. Yellow Submarine, Resin 1/144 scale.

Surprised such a nice model lacks so much detail in many areas. Especially that engine cover.

I am not going to overdo it though. It’s about time to just finish it off.

I think someone asked you about modding the clothing; but thanks for showing us how you did it! He looks great! Is he going to be one of your idols on stage!?:D

Kodai is just for practice, but he won't make the stage unless he's a soprano🙃

It WAS you who got me thinking about adding details. Thx for that.

@007-vf1 Those details are looking good! Much better than stock!

@arbit I stand corrected! I wasn't thinking of "clothes," just that giant iconic arrow on the uniforms. None the less, he looks great! Don't make him a "soprano" 😄 - MT

Wow, that is some really nice detail work! Seems like it was a laborious process but I bet it'll look amazing all painted up. I agree with your sentiment about not overdoing it. Sometimes you just gotta "get 'er done"!

A little bit more progress on the battroid and I finished the 1D.

Macross Idol Project Cont'd...

This is a special treat for Macross II fans. She is completely scratch built from parts, with sculpting and added clothing details (If you can call it clothing😃).

The last two photos are actually of a print fail on her left side and left hand, which I reprocessed and printed for first photo.

Not my favorite character, but can't wait to paint and highlight these details.

Ah ... the ARII VF-1D 1/100. My first Macross kit. I loved it!

Posted (edited)

My wife went up to Winstar Casino with her brother this weekend for a quick end of summer trip.  For some months now, I have been trying to gently convince my loving bride that after 10 years of me SUFFERING standing up, airbrushing models outside in the garage IN TEXAS is really getting to me now that I'm in my mid 40's.  It's HOT, HUMID AF or.. COLD and hurts my back standing on the concrete.  There are about 10 weekends a year MAYBE that it is actually enjoyable to do so. SO!  My main problem is convincing her that I'm ONLY going to spray acrylics, which are water based and non toxic, and I spray such small amounts and clean up with Windex, that it would be fine. She thinks I'm going to asphyxiate us including the cats which eat and poop in that room and stink up the entire house with paint odor.  I have shown here multiple pros that have indoor home setups such as Barbatos Rex on YouTube and he does EVERYTHING indoors, acrylics,, lacquers and enamels.  ANYWAY,  I took the bull by the horns and did a ton of research online, spent my $50 on supplies, had them shipped to my office last week and setup a proof of concept trial this morning while she is away!  (She knows nothing about this!) LOL! This WILL be my idea of HEAVEN ON EARTH!!! Well....

RESULTS!!! -- Mixed -- I airbrushed the front and rear decks of the Titanic with Tamiya Acrylic.  No paint odor at all and I got to SIT IN THE COOL room and paint!!!  However, I used my handy new digital thermometer to take readings for temp and humidity in the kitchen, far away from the room, and later in the modeling room. 3 degrees warmer in the modeling room, and it just smelled like "outside" ICK.  I went outside and could not feel any cool air escaping from the window, so that was good.  You could definitely notice the outdoor smell and the temp change though, I'm guessing the temp change is due to just the piece of plastic letting in more heat then a double paned window, and the smell just is what you get from the air coming back through the tube into the spray booth, everything else was sealed up pretty darn airtight.  So...I don't think it's going to work this time around, If I sealed the window panel better maybe, but for now, I'm going to keep all the parts I bought and maybe the next house we get, I'll have a "Man Shed" with AC out back or something...back to the garage I go.......and I'm sad, after experiencing painting sitting down in the AC.

@arbit Great sculpt! I think you are going to get a lot of "Where did you get that!?" comments. And thanks for the tips on the free files!

@derex3592 You're setup looks good! I spent several month in Texas. Great people, but I hated the weather (Georgia too). You GOTTA have a place where you can work in decent temperatures. Tell your wife I said that!😄

Except for painting on a nice table and light colored carpet (are you crazy ), everything SHOULD work. No smells from outside should be getting inside while the blower is running, unless you do have a leak. You'll still have the Tamiya paint smell, but that's OK and to be expected as it cures.

You may have some temperature change from room to room before you did your setup. Did you check that? Various rooms in my house are like that already. All in all, three degrees is nothing really. Can you close a door to that room to help out during painting? I'm SURE you can get your setup to work!

@Photogirl Great graphics work! I'm sure you're going to get people asking to buy a sheet!

I spent more time reorganizing model supplies than building this weekend, but in the end, I have more room for stuff now and its easier to find things. One short tip. If you go through a lot of coffee cans, get three. Keep the bottom on one, cut the bottom off the middle one, and then duct or metal aluminum tape them all end to end. You'll have something to keep your longs bags of styrene tubes in. The longer Plastruct bags fit too!

The smoke grenades (Kotobukiya missiles) are painted up.

35-86.jpg.0475f0e6217995111b225ae312f40d67.jpg

I added hydraulic lines to the manipulators with some rings to act as connectors. You guys get the magnified view so you can see all my flaws;).

35-89.jpg.2d8fbea0fc997def4edc721fe8fb7a27.jpg

And shown connected to the arms. I think I need to dial back the paint touch-ups and weathering. REAL military equipment usually doesn't have rust on it (except maybe ships). It gets touched up. Its called Corrosion Control. If you don't do it, you're not doing your job maintaining it.

35-90.jpg.e3fc79010ac8d6fc4c61de0e82aeb9ee.jpg

And because I TRY to stay well grounded, I glued brass nuts into the feet to attach to the base.

35-91.jpg.7068aee786836559f6819ea34c146690.jpg

And the base. Last week I got a great slab of boxwood with bark from Hobby Lobby. I wanted an uneven shape. I was going to clean the bark clean off, but my wife suggested I keep it on. I went a step further and cleaned the rough bark off, but kept the undercoat on it. When painted, it will have the texture of rock as on a hilltop. I coated it with about 5 coats of polyurethane to seal everything solid and prevent chipping. Then I got some plastic feet from the hardware store and added those on.

@derex3592 That is a nice and clean looking set-up. Wifey might like a towel or sheet over that nice table though...;)

@Photogirl Impressive work on the decal sheet!

@MechTech Once again you wow with the details on those mechs. And great idea using the bark painted up as rock. Shouldlook rean nice.

Thanks Thom. I wouldn't monetize unlicensed IP. But eventually once I finish my project, I will find a way to release all my figures for free.

I am using some parts made by other people; So I need to figure that out too.

Mechtech, Your details are looking great.

Reminds me a bit of Masamune Shirow's manga designs.

Designed, no. they are reproductions of the Matchbox and Takatoku set, but i completely remade them in Photoshop with cleaner, crisper lines.

@Thom Thank you! I hope to get more done this week.

@arbit Thank you too! "Reminds me a bit of Masamune Shirow's manga designs." I agree (though I didn't think of that). The exception is that my pilots are wearing more clothes!

@pengbuzz Great work on the elevator! Is it just me, or does it sound like on the way up Optimus needs to lose some weight!?😄 Just kidding! It's normal for drives to sound like that under load. Cool concept too! - MT

Thanks MT! Yeah, under load the sound changes. I had a faster motor for it, but it almost put Optimus into orbit!

In all seriousness, though here's some pics of the internal mechanism:

It’s not the only thing I have been working on this week. Almost done with my DYRL version of Exsedor in 1/144 in polymer clay. About 3.5 inches; so Britaii K doesn’t feel so lonely. 😁
