Has anyone here built the Bandai Variable 1/72 that goes with this Strike Parts set?

IMG_20210506_105326.thumb.jpg.096c886a4d61bd2b393ae081b4c7d515.jpg

I had the kit, but it looked a bit messy and I heard it fell apart easily so I flipped it, but I'm thinking about kit-bashing it into maybe one of my older Bandai kits..... Maybe the fixed Battroid.... Or if I'm feeling super ambitions, maybe one of my older Bandai Variable kits.....

I built it. Not a fan, very floppy, can't hold together in battroid at all, horrible posing (can't a-stance at all in Gerwalk).

The other Bandai 1/72 transforming kits are great, but the VF-1... The best thing I can say about it is that it does in fact transform.

The older Bandai 1/72 kits do need work. The new Bandai 1/72 kits... good grief.

It's meant as a surprise :D

So, now we really know what happened to Minmay. She got trapped in your diorama!! Looks very cool though.  I'm sure she's quite happy there.

Love the FFS kits.  I used to read your stuff on the Gundam Eclipse forum.  Is that forum still active?  it was the only one I could find for FSS related topics.

well, all super parts painted, love de color :), wings painted too and yesterday try to fix some paint problems with the YF-19

@joscasle that color on the Super Packs looks like the tone I want to use on my Mortar Headd.

Nice to see you here, DM. Unfortunately, GE is pretty much dead, but I will keep posting in the FFS thread there since it's one of the few remaining western outposts of FSS modeling that you can easily find on Google. I recently set up a Twitter account (@WorkshopIndigo) to keep an eye on assorted Japanese modelers and will post there when I get to the more substantial stuff.

Please, by all means! :D That original stand is nobody's friend, and it's hella weak! o.o

And admittedly, I got the stand idea from you when you mounted the E-A on that board! So, let me return the favor! :)

Here is the graphic I used, in case you need it; I also did the "A" version in case you need it for the other one:

@arbit And...she gets sucked out of the airlock! That's awesome Arbit! Great combining of projects. And now we know what the piano was for!

@joscasle That paint looks great! Clean lines.

@peter I'm curious to see how you use the armor. I actually have the variable armor (each sold separately) to try and fuse with the original variable valk. Great minds think alike!

I need to take more photos, but I'm still beefing up the moveable joints. The newer beefier one on the left, and the original on the right. - MT

Oh, don't look at me for ideas, I'll probably produce a mangled mess. IMG_20210510_220605.thumb.jpg.ef7559c454a233a9e1ff144c3415d813.jpg

I popped open the armor set, and the construction seems sturdier, but I was expecting Bandai to hide more of the seam lines.

IMG_20210510_215904.thumb.jpg.245a4c3e37129470b056818dc579b539.jpg

They left this one done the middle of the arm armor......

IMG_20210510_215915.thumb.jpg.51bf9470e5e9a22665d1e7e78dbccc1a.jpg

But went to the trouble to hide this one, which isn't visible anyway when it's mounted.

Anyway, I'm still humming and hawing over which old Bandai 1/72 to try to use it on, the variable or the fixed Battroid.

IMG_20210511_115306.thumb.jpg.7105652200a0743868cff85ef98a6d2e.jpg

Dug out a few variables I built as a kid..... Boy did I ever butcher these kits.  Might cannibalize these for parts.

The Super Ostrich and Elintseeker both come with spare noses and fuselage (chest/back) plates, and even some spare armor pieces.  Valkyrie spare parts are growing....always wanted to do a hangar maintenance diorama of some sort, but that's beyond my imagination and abilities.

IMG_20210511_115722.thumb.jpg.71a24cbe1311753030a05660ebcb755d.jpg

Had the idea of stealing the variable arms from my childhood build for the Battroid kit instead of using the Popeye arms.  They're a mess though so they will require heavy weathering and probably a lot of battle damage.

IMG_20210511_161033.thumb.jpg.d73189ce38e6e2be2aa51ce2a23b36d5.jpg

Already trying to figure out modding the joints with whatever polycaps and ball joints I have laying around.  Not so much for posing, but for easy of paint.  Hate captured parts.

IMG_20210511_163455.thumb.jpg.4ede257f9a58d8ee43277e691a112315.jpg

More Gundam donor parts.

IMG_20210511_221256.thumb.jpg.5f507505476909f4c8d26f7e456837a9.jpg

I never watched Gundam, never got into it, so I have no idea where all these Gundam kits came from.

IMG_20210511_212824.thumb.jpg.95fe21bc4e256fa59308acaa44a3b013.jpg

These arms are totally pooched.  Will take a lot of will power to get them working again.

IMG_20210511_115606.thumb.jpg.e60aa55ebec43f43a5f23f0da8e76117.jpg

Wish I had a few more Hasegawa 1A or 1S Battroid heads, but I guess this build might end up being a 1J.

LOL, still haven't 100% committed to adding armor to the Battroid or one of my old variable kits.  Have any of you guys done either before?

@peter Use the old variable valk! That way you can make mistakes on it before I do:lol: I think the size of it is closer anyhow, that's why I got the new variable ones (on sale) to try on the old variable kit. - MT

@peter A plus about using mismatched parts is that you can model a Valk that had an arm or leg replaced from a machine with a different color. Like the B-17's that had wing or fuselage swap-outs,

Lol, I might actually be leaning this way.....looking at just the legs of the battroid kit, they are ridiculously oversized and the back of the leg armor would need to be shaved right down or I need to heavily mod the legs.

The varliable kit....ugghhh...I never actually wanted to build it, but it looks like I might have to.  It's just a better fit for the strike pack with seemingly less modification.

Besides, the current battroid build is kind of a mess, might be quite a bit more flawed than my previous attempt with the low vis 1A

Thanks guys. But for this particular project, your opinion only half matters. What did your other half think of it?  I've been showing it to any lady that crosses my path.

Posted (edited)

@arbit I'll have to ask the ladies in the house what they think.

The "neck" area seemed blah so I added a "collar" around it. It helps to cover a piece that holds the neck in place and allows it to elevate upwards. The collar smoothly transitions into the "backpack" power pack and fuel storage. Its not glued together yet for upcoming assembly.

The left shoulders are done and the arms still need to be designed. I should glue the breast plates on to show the actual look to the whole thing. Getting there little by little... - MT

So a while back I bought some "loose" 1/72 RVF-25 Drones, lots of the little pieces were in a baggie and naturally I lost the baggie. So with a bunch of other spare parts I came up with this.

This mess of parts.

Sorry @MechTech I decided to go with the fixed Battroid instead.  On closer inspection, the variable version would actually be a lot more work..... For me at least since I don't know what the hell I'm doing.  Looking forward to your build and see how you approach it.

I might build the variable as a fixed Gerwalk later on, with some spare Hasegawa parts thrown in.  I have a complete nose, cockpit and fuselage parts that came with the Super Ostrich and Elintseeker.

@Thom Looking good!

@505thAirborne Great ktibash! You can't tell it's not canon-unless you know.

@derex3592 An organized work area is a happy work area! OK, it's corny, but true! I did some of that myself too this weekend consolidating stuff.

@peter Thanks Peter! Great work on the fence! We did similar last week. We planted a whole bunch of azalea bushes in the yard and got rid of some old rotten barrels overgrown with ivy. Too bad about the variable valk being that messed up, but I'm sure the fixed will look great too when you're done with it.

Getting there on the armor. The inner parts of the arm had cut and glued "O" pieces to hold the ball joint poly-cap in place. This is the "wrist" area now. Then I added detail pieces into the shoulder joints and a beefed-up piece to go into the polycap of the fore-arm.

35-12.thumb.jpg.71cad318d253c57b10170350951d70b8.jpg35-13.thumb.jpg.8fc8513d0db3f5bd30c2d6027e654ac1.jpg

I took the outer arms plate and added some resin missiles onto them and then a cover for the gun in the arm. I think I'm going to shave the gun barrel back and add a mini-gun cover instead. This one looks too much like a laser cannon or something sci-fi. Then I completed making the manipulators and you can see one open and closed.

35-14.thumb.jpg.2f280cdbd65a78375c0bcba859b8305d.jpg35-15.thumb.jpg.05bda9897190faacbe56a44558ecf685.jpg

Glued on the chest plate armor and snapped the shoulder pieces in to check fit and dimensions.

35-16.thumb.jpg.bb142d65410129a654bc155a04329bb1.jpg

So everyone, what do you think? Which head do you think looks better? The left or the right? I'm kinda partial to the right, but not sure. Both pieces came with the original kit. The head was the head and the second piece was an engine. Thanks for checking in! - MT
