arbit Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 (edited) Does anyone have a 1/72 stage Minmay figure to donate for a good cause? It comes with Bandai's transforming valk. Please PM me. Edited August 22, 2020 by arbit Quote

Chas Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Already did. It's somewhere round here. In a box under my work bench I think. Quote

Gabe Q Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 @MacrossJunkie Your Ivanov looks convincingly weathered. Good job! I could never have the courage to do that to an expensive collectible. @Chas That red Legioss reminds me of my build. It looks great. I bought the green one a while back on clearance and I'm tempted to build it now. Anyhow, I'm just waiting for the glue to dry then I'll attach the legs and little light bits. Then, done! Quote
MechTech Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 That's looking great Gabe! Nice -n-clean too! - MT Quote
Chas Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 Agree completely, really clean colour separation and smooth paint application. Looks real sharp. Are you gonna leave it clean or add some subtle weathering? Quote
Gabe Q Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I'm gonna apply some light dry brushing to the edges of the armor parts. My AC has been out so it's brutal to sit in my workroom for too long. In the meantime, it'll have to stay as is. Quote
derex3592 Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 Dang, this thing is bigger than you think it is! There's like 20 parts to this kit.. LOL! Uuuuunfortunately, there is no interior. None. Zero, zip, nada. Soooo.... I'm not willing to pay for all of the parts that are available on Shapeways, I'm sure they would be amazing but I can't drop over $100 on that for a $20 kit, however, I found a YouTube build with a cheaper alternative solution that I will be kind of following with some upgrades of my own along the way. However, not right now. This one's going in the closet for a while! Quote
derex3592 Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 ....AHEM.... tryyyyyin to get some pre-work done here... Quote
MechTech Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 Convectuoso - That's looking good so far. Derex - You should just stick some decals in the windows that look like people. Don't you just love it when your cats "help you" build your kits! Your cat looks like one of our two, minus 20 lbs! - MT Quote
electric indigo Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 IMO the Runabout has such a heavy handed design that it would look much better with a beat-down, industrial Chris Foss paintjob. Quote
MechTech Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 There were a lot of photos from a lot of work I finally caught up on, but I'll spare you guys with just a few. I made two rings (actually four for failures). One conical that goes directly under the gun housing, and a second that the gun mount goes into. The conical one is straight forward, but the mount ring was a lot of work. The ring has bolts all around it. I drilled holes just to keep them evenly spaced. I tried to use leftover bolts from the 1/20 Votoms kit, but there weren't enough! So I had to make my own. Thankfully there was the die I made for the flight deck months back. I thought that and a cut-out die might work - thankfully they did! This was also a second attempt. The first one with thin plastic and just stamping out heads didn't work. SSSssshhh, yes the heads are actually Torx bit shaped, but I won't tell anyone if you don't! A quick note about scale. The Rings are the wrong size since parts of the turret need strength or the mechanism in the turret is bigger than scale. It was a balancing act. I used simple sewing pins and old floppy disc springs to make the metal parts on the turret. Those are the doorstops, door latch (on the door) and a door catch on the bottom back of the housing. And a few specs of styrene at their base. A male Torx bit and cut-out die made the door latch/handle holder. The magnifying glass is my friend. Just before calling it quits, I managed to get the gun base shaped out of pine and vacu-formed. The ring with bolts will go on top of this. Thanks for checking in guys! - MT Quote

Chas Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 MT. Your builds always look museum quality in the level of detail and how clean the lines are. Always inspirational. Quote
Thom Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 Work continues on UNCF Nautilus. Lengthening the hull and beefing up the under hull scoop. Also going to move it back about a 1/4 inch. Quote

I'm working on making this Murasame class so I can print it in 1/350 scale to go along with my other ships. Quote
peter Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 (edited) And here I was, thinking how clever I was making plates to replicate the repair work on the side of the Enterprise. Still waiting on some decals so not a very exciting update. I heard that on the studio model, those plates were actually decals because they didn't want to permanently damage the model. peter Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 After a few days of soaking in pure Simple Green and periodic scrubbing, this was the best I could do. I couldn't get 100% of the paint off, but at least I got most of my grade 8 brush strokes off. I'll accept the remainder as texture. Anyway, Klingon ships shouldn't be too pretty, lol! Started to fill in seam lines. These kits are in rough shape, lol! Quote
Gabe Q Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 @MechTech The bolts on that gun look great! The level of precision you achieve is astounding. Also, that base for the gun you vacuformed is impressive as well. 21 hours ago, Dobber said: Looking great Gabe Q! Chris @Dobber Thank you! @Thom Your mods on that Nautilus look good. It looks like a trivial thing to space it out a quarter inch but it is actually a bit of work so hats off to you. And @Grayson72 you're building one digitally! But that's cheating! Jk, looks great. @peter Thanks for the update anyhow even if you think it's not very exciting. I mainly enjoy how you give us updates on your ups and downs both. @Convectuoso That bb8 looks great. Those bandai kits are nice to work with. I built a 3po a weeks back and it went together with no problems. There was a lot of posts! Keep building and posting guys. Quote
Gabe Q Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 Wow, almost forgot to post my update after seeing all of your guys' stuff. Just getting the pilot ready and she's all done! Quote

I heard that on the studio model, those plates were actually decals because they didn't want to permanently damage the model. I think your way is better. Just remember something that Adam Savage once said: what looks right, doesn't always photograph right (or something along those lines—it was in reference to finding a "gold" foil to cover an Apollo moon lander with). So, the decals that worked in the lighting and angles used in the films may be unsatisfactory in real life. Your way also adds gives additional texture to the surface. Quote
derex3592 Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 I began the arduous task of handpainting the miniscule interior part details on the Death Star yesterday. 3 done, 3 to go. Quote
