Duymon Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Finally had some time to recast the gummy Yamato lowviz pilot for my 1/48 Hasegawa VF-1 build Quote

They could be skimming the surface of an ARMD on their way to a sortie. Just a few square pieces of plastic and some paint and you'd be good to go! Good point, I think I'll try it, nothing to lose Quote

Question, what section is Hikaru launching from here? I can't seem to match up the geometry here: I know in the beginning of DYRL, they are launch from sides (not the blue stripe side). What about the end of the movie? Quote

If I had to guess, the angle's a bit off but it mostly looks like the top angled section of the port side, just before the deck becomes completely flat. Quote
pengbuzz Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Well...it's been bugging me for a while now, but I decided today to make the final original counterpart of my factory diorama: the transport buggy: I got an old pilot figure from a busted P-51 Mustang in 1/72, and used a spare seat from the failed Bandai VF-1S kit I had. I then took some anonymous spare parts (including some 1/72 landing gear wheel spares), some scrap styrene, and a bit of glue and paint. I'll try to get some pics of it in the display tomorrow, when the light's better. Cheers folks! (not that I'm British by any means! ) Quote

I just bought some smooth-on kits and made a two piece mold of the figure using legos and clay for the first half, and then did the second half with some mold release. To fit in the hase 1/48 i had to trim the hard legs just below the knee and then cut away a little bit of the extra bulk under the arms for a perfect fit Edited July 10, 2020 by Duymon Quote

MechTech Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Pengbuzz - That looks great, especially cobbled together from bits and pieces! So where's the masking tape on it Duymon - Cool casts of that pilot. Is it just me, or does it look like the Predator character? - MT Quote
Gabe Q Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 @Duymon That's awesome, thank you. Some of my hase kits need TV pilots. I'll try this out. Quote

derex3592 Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 (edited) Buzz Lightyear To The Rescue!!! Good fun little kit. The wings are spring loaded and work great with a push of the big red button on his chest. The winglets then pull out and lock into place. Edited July 11, 2020 by derex3592 Quote
MechTech Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 Buzz looks really cool Derex! That looks like a fun kit too. They did a great sculpt on that kit and colorizing it. - MT Quote
peter Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 Ok guys, amateur hour again. I literally have no artistic sense whatsoever, and no fabrication skills at all, so go easy, lol! I originally started off with an old cutting board screwed to another board, and the Valks supported on hex keys, and the base just sprayed dark gray. It was barely big enough to support the four members of Skull, but then that loser from Prometheus got lost and is now tagging along. I really wanted a section of the ARMD carrier as a base, but there was no way I could fabricate 5 launcher arms and launch bays, so I settled on trying to replicate a simpler section of the carrier. Wait for it....when you get to the end of this post, you'll be scratching your heads wondering how the end product even resembles that section, hahahaha! Anyway, found another old cutting board. Cut an angle on it to sort of look like part of the ARMD. I even cut a panel line into the board...though if you look closely, it's jagged as $hit and not smooth or straight. I screwed the boards together from the bottom and started hot-gluing bits and bods to it. I'm not only terrible at greebling, I just used whatever I had laying around instead properly cutting styrene to panel-looking shapes . Another blast of spray paint and now I'm just watching paint dry. Quote

Finding parts that resemble what you're looking for and using household materials is the number one skill when it comes to kitbashing/ scratchbuilding. (Little secret for ya: the arm launchers on my Strike VF-1S were wooden yard stakes in a previous life!) Don't worry about that panel line that "isn't straight": with the amount of abuse the Macross likely took when it made the trip home, it will make it look like the ship took a dent there. If it bothers you, just sand it a little and repaint it with black primer before you go on to the color coats. Please keep going with this; I'd like to see what you do with it! Quote
pengbuzz Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 (edited) Okay, last shots for the Macross Factory in 1/72: The buggy is the last of he vehicles; aside from maybe some more figures and some human-scale equipment (such as welders, air tank carts, coffee cups, etc), I think this is it for this one! (unless I get another idea, like "sumo" armor for the 1J... ) Edited July 12, 2020 by pengbuzz Quote

You can build this up to make the base look better and bring out the detail. Quote

MechTech Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 Peter - I posted in your main build thread, but the stand looks great! Maybe some weathering would add character to it? Right now, the focus is on the valks, detailing it may help pull it in together. It still looks great though! Pengbuzz - That build came out awesome! The details really make it pop! I always wanted to do something like that, but with moving all the time, it just wasn't going to survive the moves. You pulled it off great! Derex - Your stand looks professional and will compliment your build nicely! I look forward to seeing it completed. - MT Quote
MechTech Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 Evil scientists laugh - MuuuHaaahaaahaaa! It works! FINALLY, I got an autocap cannon to work AND fit inside the turret properly! I'll post more photos later and make a movie, but there are still adjustments that need to be made so it can elevate inside the turret. Since the cap gun works, I started prepping the turret to accept the hardware and make scale details. The cool part is there is a slow gearmotor to give it more torque. The motor matches the 2-3 rounds a minute of the real MK-45 Mod 4 gun mount adding to the realism. I can't be in the shop all the time, so I busted out a couple of Dunbine models to sit with the family while one of our cats busted out the box. I was looking at possibly converting one into a Bioroid from Southern Cross. After looking at all the models, I realized there is a theme. Not the obvious "Hey, they look like insects." It was that they all have weapons in the crotch! What the heck!?!? To make it worse, they are built on an ABS ball frame with tiny joints that pop off if you look at it wrong. The green one, "Tod Wryneck" is the worst. The Red/orange "Leprechann" isn't so bad. It's too bad because they have the good ole multi-color sprues Bandai is known for. Still don't know about the bioroid. They're gonna need some "surgery" first - MT Quote

MechTech Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 My apologies, but one of my posts didn't get posted. Peter - As I posted in your main thread, the base looks great! Keeping it as is focuses on the valks. Adding details, weathering and color to the base will incorporate it into the whole scene. I guess it's what end product you want out of it. Pengbuzz - The factory looks awesome! The detail and colors make it pop and stand out. I always wanted to do something like that, but moving all the time for the military made it impossible. I have the kit from decades ago and never fully assembled it. Congrats on a great project! Derex - Your base will make your project a great display piece! Thank you guys, still more work to go on the whole turret. I'm spending more work on the darn turret than the whole ship put together! -MT Quote
