Thanks Pengbuzz, I decided a tacky 70's gold stand kinda went with it.. haha.

Now you just need the "Disco" version of the Star Wars theme and a small disco mirror ball Death Star! lol

Anywho, some progress on my VF-1S:

100_0309.JPG

I did some panel line work on the Battroid Nose/ cockpit so that it looked like the Fighter/ Gerwalk Version. A closer look here:

100_0310.JPG

I also found a spare pilot from my first build of the VF-1S and did some reworking on him. I didn't really care for the "I hope no one hurts me" near-fetal pose he was in (sorry about the blurriness, my camera doen't like it's own close-up mode):

100_0311.JPG

I also reworked the cockpit a bit; I plan on redoing the side panels in the "tub" with greeblies added for throttle and control sticks. I'll also see about a transparent HUD as I go:

100_0312.JPG

I also did some panel engraving on the topside of the fighter: after the VF-1J, it just looked a bit too plain to me. I may go back and redo the 1J at some pint with a blade and some darker paint to contrast the panels, but that's for another day when I feel brave:

100_0313.JPG

Battroid mode: I rounded the fronts of the thighs/ intakes a bit as the felt a bit boxy:100_0314.JPG

I don't plan on going "overboard" on this one, but just touching up a few things that often bothered me about the Imai VF-1 Variable kit. I may also revise the tail and add a bit to the ailerons (they seem a bit skinny to me).

Stay tuned...

Last time I did an old Imai Macross kit, Bandai came out with the Hi Metal R Monster like a month later..

Let's see if I can get that situation to happen again... LOL!... Prepare the putty and the sanding tools!

No....with these old kits, I do good just to get them together and painted half way decent!  Honestly, I don't understand how I'm really suppose to go about this kit..the feet need to be fully sanded, primed, painted and THEN put into the legs which then have to be glued together, primed sanded, painted, etc..and on and on it goes..it's gonna be a b*tch.  I truly HATE the way these kits were designed,.  You can't just build "the legs", then "the arms" etc, etc...I tried looking for YouTube builds last night to learn from and get some ideas,  but didn't find anything helpful.

I agree.  The assembly of those old kits are a really pain (I've worked on a Phalanx, and the Tomahawk and GBP-1S that came with the SDF-1 interior diorama).

The worst thing is that they tend to become floppy over time because of the way the joints are composed (if you don't accidentally get glue on them during assembly!)

One mod that you could try on some parts is try to incorporate any spare rubber gasket parts leftover from Gundam kits, etc.  It might be a bit tricky and you may not get full mobility, but it might be more than worth the effort just to be able to quickly assemble/disassemble part of the kit.

I often rebuild those joints that are a royal pain (case in point: the VF-1's bicep swivel). Sometimes it's just easier to  do that than try to follow their plan and end up with either a joint that may as well be a revolving door, or one that is so frozen in place that freeing it would also free the limb in question from the body!

That happened when I did my Glaug model years ago. Shoulder joint snapped off and I was so mad. It set on a shelf one armed for months until I found the miracle glue that I used to stick it back in place permanently. If course Bandai then came strong with the HM-R Glaug.. LOL

Alright, I forced myself to get on the computer and finally download my camera. Here's what I've got done so far. Hasegawa's Tri-Tool was the inspiration to make the aluminum jig for making all the windows the same. Each one was scribed to make them the same versus just cutting on some lines. More work, but better accuracy (unless you have a laser cutter).

All the cutting for the windows created bowing, carbon fiber rod was used on various areas to stiffen it up and straighten it out.

Actual ships have girders between the windows in some cases, so I used Evergreen I beams and did that. Then they will double up to hold the windows when painted - no masking them off - YEAH! The clothespins are tiny craft ones, not full sized ones.

Its starting to look like something now. - MT

Thank you guys. This will be a light frigate, but similar to the littoral combat ships - just better armed. Hopefully the three water jets will get it going quick when done.

Your Defiant came out great Thom. It looks very similar to the way the battle damaged the show models. - MT

That's a pretty cool vid! Guys got more skilz than I!!

With USS Defiant off on missions, a new ship has entered the ship yard. This is the 1/1000 Sentinel class model designed by Admiral Buck on Resin Illuminati. Ugh Models was making them until they got a CnD and I managed to get a few. This one will be named the Saber NCC-2556.

The main hull pieces are already together and I'm just filling and sanding, as well as mounting it. The nacelles will stay off until after paint.

Thanks for sharing that Tom! That is a cool video and the production was pretty professional too! It's the cat right? The cat reminded you of this build?:D He gets into every box I leave out and breaks in every new box I get in the mail.

That's cool Thom! CnDs suck. That dude is not going to make any money off that kit. But hey, copyright is copyright.- MT0309191221c.thumb.jpg.bb1c58ad73f58c894df6a060ed009e78.jpg

Progress report: picked up the cockpit to work on it, and instead managed to snap the landing gear doors right off the nose-

100_0320.thumb.JPG.8f784dae029f91f203f5d2196dbe84ed.JPG

This really pisses me off. This $#!+ always happens when I try to build Skull-1.

Anyways, needing to repaint the nose after stripping it (long story) and I really would like to finish this model someday. Half-tempted to just glue the damn landing gear shut and add a plate over this section.

Stay tuned folks.

Sorry Pengbuzz, I'm familiar with those delicate doors. I know you can fix it!

No way Tom, that's EXACTLY the same thing I'm working on now! Except mine is the hanger bay door! I cut plastic slots too (smaller and thinner). But then I glued them together with a thin mesh on the back as a giant hinge. Not sure of the drive, but I'm thinking of using belt and cogs to drive it. That's what I've been testing. - MT

Well, my solution was to remove the doors from the other valkyries as well, seeing as those also had cracks that were waiting to open up. I'd rather just leave the tires exposed a little on the bottom than wrestle with this.

My Mk I Viper - First Cylon War is FINALLY finished.  I finished it at 0900 on 1 June and had it on the Wonderfest table at 1130. Needless to say, I was cutting it close.  It was all worth it, as the model took a Silver!

Check the album out to see all the images but here you'll see some preshading and the finished images.

Comments and criticisms welcome.

Kenny

Well, for what it's worth, i finished the VF-1S (FINALLY):

100_0323.thumb.JPG.c596bb613ee5f1d56b1a654847233adb.JPG

Panel lines are a bit heavy, weathering a bit too much, nose gear doors broken off, but I really don't care. I finally finished it, and it's done. It looks halfway decent and that's what matters.

Hikaru: "Roy, I get the feeling that something's behind us...."

Roy: "Hikaru, I'm NOT turning around.; YOU don't turn around either. If we don't turn around, then we're safe..."

Hikaru: "Um...not to question your logic sempai, but that...er...doesn't sound like a very good plan."

Roy: "Yeah, well I'm all out of rum back at base so getting 'liquid courage' ain't gonna happen this time around, little brother."

Hikaru: "We're screwed..."

Roy: "Yup. But look on the bright side: at least you don't have to listen to Misa bitching at you for being late getting back to base."

Congrats Kenny on the silver and GREAT looking Viper! The hard work was worth it.

Great finish Penbuzz! Your job came out great despite the doors hangup. I like the base you have it on too. I always loved that model. You never forget your first Valk!

As you probably saw in the video above, the guy made a roll-up style bed cover for hid R/C truck. It was funny because I already made a similar door for my ship's hangar. This weekend I finally finished the drive for it.

So just imagine a roll-top desk or a roll-up styled garage door - that's what I made for my ship. I cut slivers of grooved styrene and then carefully laminated them together with very fine mesh for the glue to adhere into. This made a highly flexible roll-up garage / hangar bay door. I then attached strips of cogged belts (from an old printer) on the left and right side of the door. Then I used an old focusing geared motor from a dead camera and motorized the door drive. A carbon fiber rod goes from the camera geardrive stretched across the door with a gear on both sides to drive into the belts.

Styrene "I" beams make up the sides of the door / rails that the door rides inside of. The first photo shows one side up close. Gears on both sides of the door drive into the belts on the door making it move. Really simple, but it was fun to make it work smoothly. Sorry, no video yet. - MT

I needed a break from the demanding Tomcat, and Hase's new Fighter 1 from Crusher Joe provided a very relaxing opportunity. Hasegawa proves that their engineering is on par with Bandai with this new line of shake-n-bake kits.

Since I chose a different tone of blue for the fuselage, I could not use the decal for the nose and needed to make a mask. The strip of tape on the nose is a guide for the positioning of the mask.

Beautiful!  I'm getting more and more to the point where I would rather mask and paint large markings like that, rather than use decals.  It just looks so much more natural in a lot of cases.

I might have to see about grabbing one of those kits someday, would probably go decently next to my Cosmo Zeroes. ^_^
