Well guys, I've been eying this for a while on Amazon and the price finally dipped down to cheaper than I've seen and I had some points so I got for about $100. Can't wait to try it out!

HOWEVER!.... that's going to have to wait a few weeks. I'm going to be shutting down production here as new flooring and complete indoor repainting of the house is on the horizon for the 2nd and 3rd week of March. I'll post some pics of my labors over the last few months packing up 15 years of Macross toys and models and Lightsabers and everything else in between! All that's left now is the model desk and supplies! What a PITA! 😁 It will be worth it though!

Been working on my 1 3000 Yamato.  All home made with panel lining, decaling, fluorescent lights and clear coat.

My 9-yr old daughter helped me with the Florys wash. Lots of fun and lots of q-tips.

@arbit You (and the Scion) did a great job! Hearing the opening soundtrack in my head.

As to my project, I was able to mate the Tamiya intake trunking/nose gear well with the Hasegawa cowling. Was a bit of work with cutting and sanding and testing and adding back plastic...

Not a good shot, but it is now a lot deeper than the Hasegawa part. 

Then I did a test fit and... uh oh...

oh no!

Somewhere in all the cutting and hacking, and a bent wing, the true went out the window!

I stepped back from it for a night to thunk on the matter, then popped the Hasegawa 'insert' out from the belly and reglued it. It is now proud on one side and shamed on the other, but the inlet is more in-line as to what it should be.

 

I'll need to 'adjust' its mating surface to take care of the rest - and then fill in that big depression on that one side and sand down the other...

Just parr for the course I guess.

Glad you're building the 1/72 @electric indigo - you don't see many of those built.  What are you going to do with the cockpit?  That's one of the reasons I can't think of ever starting mine.

THANK YOU ALL for your condolences, thoughts and prayers! They're much appreciated! The long list above is one reason I posted Shadow's death. You guys are an awesome support group of sorts. I also know most of you have "building buddies". It's cool when someone gives you nice feedback on your model build, it's another when they support you in your time of loss. This is the closest thing to me for social media. No time for that AND building - so model building it is! Besides, nobody wants to see the burrito I had for dinner last night on my social media account!

Funny thing, we needed a new cat tree, so we decided to buy a new one. We went to PetCo and they had a kitten adoption day! My wife couldn't even look at them! They had tiny trees, so we went to PetSmart. They ALSO had a kitten adoption day! My wife laughed not being able to run from the inevitable!

I actually ran out of likes for all the COOL stuff you guys are building! I'll try to make updates in the week. I gotta run now, but THANK YOU ALL AGAIN! - MT

My Yamato SDF-1 was not PF either, it is "home made PF" on the cheap. 

If you actually want yours done, shipping costs would suck.

A question on fixing yellowed chogokin.

I am planning to try the "peroxide cream/gel method".  I won't be submersing the toy, I will be brushing on some peroxide gel to the affected areas and placing in a plastic bag.

Does peroxide actually speed up yellowing in the future?

Does peroxide damage Tampo decals?

ah good good good ... finally me studying chemistry is helpful.

Peroxide (I assume hydrogenperoxide, H2O2) is an acid and a heavy oxidizing agent. I can easily break down any organic compounds. Most decals (let's think waterslide decals first) use light adhesives and carriers. Those will absolutely be dissolved by H2O2.

Depending on the material used, you can be sure that H2O2 has an effect on it. Expect your decals to at least be discolored due to the color oxidizing. From there it only goes downhill: reduced adhesion, decal lifting or peeling, or destruction of the decals.

If you really want to be sure, use low concentration H2O2 and UV lights to recover yellowed plastics. There is no guarantee though. You might want to investigate on how to remove and re-apply tampo decals.

Background: The plastic is yellowing due to UV light. It is breaking down or altering the polycarbonate plastic, causing bonds in the plastics that break light differently and therefore giving it the characteristic yellow color. The H2O2 process "reverting" the effect by simply bleaching the yellowed layer of plastic. It is not repairing the plastic to it's old structure. UV impacted plastic can be more brittle.

As far as I know, the process wouldn't speed up yellowing. It is just that plastic layers under the top layer might already be impacted slightly by UV light, and if they are kept under UV exposure, they would yellow as well, giving the impression the yellowing is speeding up.

Speaking of blacklights, last night I painted the impulse engines on my 1:2500 scale Enterprise E model. Here they look under regular lighting.

And here they are under a blacklight.

I did something similar for the collector dish. I'm using Gaia Notes' Arpeggio of Blue Steel fluorescent/glow-in-the-dark lacquers. The impulse engines were painted fluorescent red and the collector dish underneath was painted with fluorescent white with a bit of fluorescent blue added. I'll mask these areas off before painting the main color. As for the nacelles, decals are provided for those. I wonder, however, if I cut into the decals, I might be able to use more fluorescent paints... Red for the Bussards, and blue for the flux chillers. Hmmm...

Hey buddy.  You're the chemist not me.  But I have found divided opinions.  Some say it is from the UV, some say it is from Oxygen (which is why it can yellow even in a dark room in a box).  Is it from both?

I’ve seen plastic yellow even from being out of a light source, but it’s far less than what I’ve seen from sun damaged plastic. UV definitely does damage. But maybe oxidation can occur over a longer period of time, but plastic does do some wild breakdowns from heat as well

Well, yes - both is right. I'll try to explain it.

Oxygen can form "free radicals" (not sure if this is the proper English term for that here, correct me if I am wrong, please). Basically, the double binding electrons in the 2p orbitals of O2 (usually a stable bond) can break with added energy (e.g. UV light). Both oxygen atoms have two spaces for valence electrons in the 2p orbital, but they cannot be filled permanently (not the most scientific accurate explanation here). So both atoms "fight" for a neutral state. The stable state would be to have only one electron in the valence electron binding with the same spin. In case you add energy (the UV light), exciting the outer electrons, they start to switch around, and bam... you can oxidize things. That makes oxygen so much fun to work with. Fun fact: due to this behavior, human body cells degrade. What keeps you alive, slowly unalives you as well.

So - what happens with the yellowing?

The polymer chains in plastic are degrading. Plastic consists of chains of molecules. The bond between those chains breaks and forms other bonds, so your polymer plastic degrades to lesser polymers or monomers with different color and different properties. Even those monomers can break down.

If your plastic is exposed to oxygen (like in air, the gas), the degrading is getting faster. Even if there is no oxygen (again, in the air surrounding the plastic, not the oxygen in the polycarbonate), yellowing can happen due to unstable bonds in the polymers. So - in any case, your plastic will slowly degrade and decompose due to subatomic effects.

The process is speed up by external energy in form of UV light, heat or other forms of radiation. Energy added to the oxygen "radicalizes" the oxygen, and then the free radicals break the (stable and meta stable) bonds.

So what do we learn from the above?

Keep your plastics stored in a low energy, low oxidizing agent environment to slow down degradation. (read: in a box in a cold basement)
