Urashiman Posted January 8 Author Posted January 8 Putty and sanding on the VF-1J. While doing this, I noticed I am on my last bottle of Alclad 2 primer and microfiller. Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to be distributed anymore (through the UK, due to some regulations on lacquer colors). Now I am in search for a proper replacement as I don’t want to pay the ridiculous shipping prices from the US to Germany. Any suggestions? Mr. Surfacer doesn’t work for me as I am using Revell enamel colors. Same for Tamiya surfacer. They tend to develop cracks on these two surfacers. The revell primer is okayish, but I want something that is primer and microfiller. Quote

nightmareB4macross Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Have to keep checking that everything fits nice and proper before finalizing parts and beginning the primer phase. Quote

If I ever come across a junker G1 Jetfire, I'm thinking of following your footsteps here! I tried something like this about 20 years ago, but it went rather....badly. Quote
derex3592 Posted January 9 Posted January 9 @electric indigo - Gorgeous! I really struggled with having to improvise yellow stripes on the A-10's weapons, and I struggle with 1/72 weapons detailing period, did you mask and paint them or use water slides and somehow make them look good on a reducing radius tiny surface, because I tried that and it didn't come out great honestly... Quote
electric indigo Posted Thursday at 03:45 PM Posted Thursday at 03:45 PM @derex3592 I switched to 1/48 to make things less fiddly, but with only partial success... For the bombs, I painted the tips yellow & masked them, the very front and the fuses were painted with a brush. The stripes on the missiles and ECM pod are decals and metal foil. It's very important to start working on the payload in parallel to the kit, otherwise you might run out of steam once the plane is completed Now on to that A-10... Quote

That's why I paint masking tape and cut it into strips; less fiddly that way... Quote

MechTech Posted Monday at 03:07 PM Posted Monday at 03:07 PM @nightmareB4macross AWESOME improvements to that '55! We can't call it a "Chunky Monkey" anymore.😁 All of those details and added "gimicks" look MUCH better than outa the box! @Cheese3 That Falcon came out great! Your cat on the other hand has that look of "Not another photo! Leave me outa this!" 🤣 Yes, it's cool having everything in the same scale. @Urashiman Cool start on that Valk! @electric indigo Your Corsair came our BEAUTIFUL! Congrats! No bias here😎, but I'm glad to see one in the Air Force livery. They're lesser known, but heavily used. For the 1/35th Dougram... Things are coming out WAAAaaaaay slower than expected with finishing the Dougram. I'm behind schedule for the model show near the end of Feb, and I haven't even started the backpack weapons yet! Oh well! Most "portable" Gatling guns have a handle on top as did the stock one. So I did one, but the handle stuck out A LOT. So I scrapped it. The ammo drum was made of two LED tealight candles cemented together. I milled out rings to go around it for strength and to attach it to the shield. An old brass flashlight was cut-up and turned into the cover for the gear case. It had threaded ends making things easier to complete. The problem was soldering it to the main body (that old piece of hose nozzle). So a wooden guide had to be lathed to keep the parts aligned and concentric. Thankfully it worked! Then I added "bolts" cut around the edge for detail. This can come apart for maintenance, so the end cap screws off. I etched in an arrow to show the direction to open it. Then I realized if it gets stuck, there's absolutely NOTHING to grip it with. So I drilled two holes in it to get tweezers into. The problem, I made a "smiley face". Oh well. It's a happy cannon now! The gun and ammo drum together. Since this was all an afterthought, I didn't build the wires into the model. So they had to be added in afterward. The gun also needed to be detachable as the original is. So old PC board IDE connectors were cut with a razor saw. They work great for this. It's the only way I know to find connectors this small. So one was made with a "fifth pin" glued to the outside to ensure it's keyed for the battery poles to align correctly. The female fits flush in the arm and the male is on the cannon. Add a glue gun and old detailing spring and everything came together while being fairly rugged. Other details are being added to the cannon case for realism. That's it for now, thanks for checking in! - MT Quote

Very impressive stuff (as usual coming from the master of metalwork on MWF!!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Meanwhile, my latest (while waiting on parts for the KBoP): Started a new larger scale figure; used hot glue to fill out the hair: Unfortunately, he was looking more like Peter Dinklage with a very bad haircut, so I sliced the head into 3 sections horizontally and, removed about 3mm from each section: Still not quite happy with it, but I'll keep working on it: Stay tuned, micronians...
