Was a busy building day today.

and a little horror story about me destroying my plamax vf-1…

this morning I looked at the minmay decal on the vf-1 and was unhappy with it. I decided it would be best to take it off, and print my own with better quality. Sounds easy but… it was not.

printed decal versus the low quality chinese one.

Hey, been there, done that. I've had to remove bad decals; usually my first trick is to use 3M masking tape to pull the decal up (even with clearcoat), but sometimes they can be stubborn little cruds!

Never going to panelline and wash anything anymore ...

The wash went super bad on my Plamax VF-1. I am really unhappy, and I am at the point where I am just like "Argh ... **** it, just **** is, I am not going into contests with this."

If I may make a recommendation: find a white paint marker with a very fine tip (perhaps a Gundam Paint Marker) and use that to refine the edges where the wash didn't exactly behave for you. I've had to do this on a number of models that went "sideways" and it works fine. Then just use a very light overspray of the base color to kill down whatever sharp edges may pop out.

What process did you use to do the wash?

If you used a clear coat, you may be able to just do a light sand with a high grit sand paper if thinners don’t work. Just curious about the products and process you used and maybe there’s a simple solution to the problem.

@pengbuzz & @Big s, thanks a lot for the troubleshooting. I usually use gloss color or a gloss coat so panel lines and washes go great. From time to time, color is less glossy in some areas, the surface a bit more rought, causing the stuff to look super dirty. To fix that, In usually spray over it, so the model is recovered.

ps: my f-14 coming along well.

Hope you can get things fixed up and don’t give up. Sometimes it’s good to make sure you have a decent gloss before panel lining and sometimes the panel lining products can be where the problems are.

@Urashiman Did the wash eat into the paint? I think I've heard of that happening with some washes. For an alternative, have you used or tried clay-based washes like Flory or ProModeller?

I was kinda curious about this as well. I’ve only had that problem with tamiya panel liners. I wasn’t sure if it could also have been an acrylic wash. I’ve always had bad luck with those as well, like if the was dries to quick leaving smudges that don’t wanna wipe away.
Personally I haven’t had big problems with oil washes and been curious about the clay washes. I’ve never seen flory or found it in stock at web stores. Just something I’m thinking about trying since they clean up with water.

That's looking good. mine was so warped everywhere , i've  had to dip almost every part in hot water. And even though there's a little gap between your upper and lower passenger compartment, they  come together and align pretty good. Mine needs a ton of work on that seem. With the wall thickness inconsistencies and misalignments, this is a time consuming project, so i really appreciate what you've done with yours. Keep it up :good:

Well, it just straight went into the fine structures of the uneven paintjob. It wouldn't be that bad if the color would have been more glossy. Technically, I have to rub the color off, and then spray it again to fix the issue here.

@Big s Yeah, it is the tamiya panel line stuff. It is too thin. I will go back to oil color washes now. It smells more due to the turpentine, but works much better. I am p****d because the panel liner from tamiya worked great on my gundam and the 3D prints, even with mate colors. hurghghghghglgl!

@ahiachris Nice rabbit! Is it a scratch build or 3d printed?

@Bolt Yeah ... I kinda got back some motivation as the F-14 turned out that well. The VF-19 and the VF-22 looks nice so far as well. Sometimes the setback is just annoying as hell.

I’ve had a few odd problems with that tamiya stuff. If you do oils and the smell of turpentine gets to you, there’s always odorless mineral spirits. They still have a bit of a smell, but not as bad

@Urashiman Your X-29 looks great! I'm glad to see an old model get some new love.😁 Your VF-1 looks great! Your decal work looks well worth it despite the other problems you've had. The gold paint looks cool too. The Tomcat is coming along great too!. Your extra effort on them all DEFINITELY shows.  - MT

@arbit Your MinMei sculpt looks accurate and cool! She just needs an embarrassed Hikaru figure.🤣

@ahiachris Your Rabbit model and mods are coming along great! It's cool to see such a rare subject being built. - MT

Well I needed another break from starships and submarines today and I'm fighting off a sinus infection from working outside most of last week, soooo... What's this??? 🤔 A MACROSS model kit on my desk for the 1st time in about a million years?! 🤣 Now I've NEVER built a Hasegawa kit before... ever....so here we go. 1st impressions, WOW... I know this a new 2023 mold but damn, the plastic just feeeeels hella good and high quality. Much to my surprise...ALL of the parts that matter are UNDERGATED! Which to me means only one thing... You can paint 99% of this thing on the sprues!! NIIICE! I just put the two halves of the radar array together and I must say I'm impressed. Is it Bandai Star Wars kits level perfect fit???....no....but it's damn close and praise doesn't come any higher than that.  Anyone with a good pair of nippers a tiny bit of sanding stick and a little cement could build this very easily. One wouldn't even have to paint it really if you were a beginner.  Now I'm looking forward to building my new Regults eventually! Bravo Hasegawa!

You know, I've been thinking about your problem here. Could you try perhaps using some #0000 grade steel wool to remove the crud from the wash without ruining the rest of the paint job. At the very least, you'd have an even surface in case you need to repaint.

I don't know if this deserves a separate thread, but I pulled the 1/350th Tunny out of storage to complete it. I tried to get it ready for our Club's "Macross Mania" night, but epically failed. Too many things broke on it and the great citrus based glue I used also oxidized the metal parts. So here's it getting refurbished like my Monster build.

Kit highlights: When the horizontal stabilizer is tilted down, the flaps go down via a linkage in the tail. The engines are on magnets and can be rotated around via a ball bearing. The rear ramps open and close.

Urashiman the kit is a 1/72 release by Plastic Cretins

Bolt, the fuselage of my kit was warped as yours, I layered plastic plate and made it curved instead of flat and I also remake some parts.
