Our friend @Xigfrid requested I make this model for him, so when I had some time I printed a copy for my self.

It seems to me that 3D Models and Printing is in its infancy.   I have a feeling in the future, 3D models will be treated like any scale model or spare parts in a junk yard.  They are just parts to be used by whomever for whatever purpose they want.

Imagine if the guys putting together the Millennium Falcon had to credit every single model they took parts from for greeblies.  And then imagine if all those model companies came knocking on George Lucas' door asking for royalties because they had used their fender from a car kit for the tail of the Falcon.

Just rambling, I haven't really thought this through...

@Bolt You got it from the same place I got mine. A guy here on the boards, the package says Korakorum.  It’s the same guy who did the VF-1D battroid conversion kit and the supervalk launch arm.

Ah so ! Thanks for the info Bruv . I've also got the 1/48 VF-1D conversion kit, it's about half finished. I've also got the 1/48 launch arm kit ! Not sure when I'm gonna get back to it, as I've got many a 1/72 to build yet.

@arbit Great looking little figure! Should look good colored up.

As to kit-bashing, I think the percentage of the model used comes into play. Something less than 25% or something...?

Lol, agreed! Mine are both 1/48. Actually, i think i got my 1D conversion kit from @captain america, originally. I'm eyeing my plastic reserve's for a few scratch built launch arms, those don't seem to be anywhere to be found in 1/72, otherwise. That's gonna be a big job!

@electric indigo That cockpit is looking great, especially the detail on the pilot! You'll see that I WISH I could use regular blades. The kit comes with ALL of the modern blade versions too!

@Bolt Looks like someone is getting all those old kits built up! The Pod looks great! I believe you captured the design from the graphics spot on! Its almost like an evil clown paint scheme.

@arbit Thank you, I'll have to check that out! We've been watching "Mythbusters" on TV lately too! Your figure looks great! You also pose a great legal question too.

So, the coconut can failed! I couldn't roll it out flat enough and it had mini valleys. So it did get tossed in the end!

The next idea that I was trying to avoid was soldering the blades to brass pieces. They'll have less strength, but still WAY better than styrene. So I drew the blades, printed them and contact cemented them to a sheet of K&S tinned steel (the tin allows the solder to adhere better).

TF-12.jpg.72e353222f074997dc665695a79f5e2e.jpg

The lathed brass pieces and the hand cut and filed blades.

TF-13.jpg.f502bd37e8831afcf67512f9117c3a77.jpg

Gettin' jiggy with it! I made a hardwood jig to hold the pieces while they were soldered. Sometimes you have to make parts that won't go on your model at all.

TF-14.jpg.1b52ca6aa15b508f96e027185b6b6d16.jpg

The soldered blades. And a "slightly" burnt jig.

TF-15.jpg.3d2c9cb2fa586f353889f9410474d665.jpg

The blades after they were carefully milled at the solder joint for uniformity. Then put on double sided tape on my mat and sanded with medium and fine sanding blocks. The sanding put nice edges on the blades.

TF-16.jpg.64e7632dc6e943f68b4a7bff55274072.jpg

I then blued all the blades with gun bluing compound. The coating wasn't even and looked awkward. So I merely coated them all with a Sharpie marker! They were also given a slight twist like real blades have. They just need to be buffed and another coat of matte finish sprayed on.

I'm still working on it, but a new piece for the air intake to go under the nose.

And the blades together. Here they are only inserted part way, not all the way in. They will sit in flush with the face of the spinner. For some reason the GIF makes them look like they're spinning in the wrong direction🙃, but they do work properly.

@pengbuzz I agree! Back to the Cat!

@electric indigo  PFFT....that's not a lot of parts!   Fine Molds 1/72 Falcon / Current 1/350 Titanic build -- Now THOSE are a sh*t ton of parts! Can't wait to see you paint it up! (If you are painting it)

I FINALLY have Tamiya enamel paints coming from Poland! Also have more Mr. Color and more Tamiya lacquers coming! Very excited!

@derex3592What's your source for Mr. Color, I need a good source for Mr. Hobby, a store that has more than 1 or 2 colors.

@pengbuzz Cats eat bats! Yeah, back to the cat!

Quick update for the week. Got the props coated with a final coat of flat.

I thought the first intake (not completed) was too big and not very "sexy" looking. So I did a second one and machined it on the rotary table to get a nice curve to it. The LOTS of shaping by hand to get the rest of it into shape,

Also in the ROUGH stages, the exhausts and associated cowling. The tubes are actual stainless steel, so I'm hoping some heat treating will give them the correct "burnt color.

I put the gearmotor on a 1.5v battery and got it to turn s-l-o-w-l-y. Now the GIF doesn't look so bad, but its too slow. Can't win them all!

Your first intake compared to your second intake shows a huge learning curve.  This is exactly what I love about modeling.  It's amazing what you can learn to do. It teaches me that if you're not pleased with your work, try again!

And when I am pleased, I stop, I don't care what others think!!!

@MechTech Your work is astoundingly good! My jaw dropped more than usual this time though. You always challenge yourself to try something new and persevere when it doesn't go well at first. You are the #1 modeler!

+1000

But that's just me.  When a model moves or lights up, my heart skips a beat.

Looks like a proper British Bird now.

Ooh, nice finish! The red panel line really makes it stand out.

Is that a real world plane? And the red panel line contains what?
