wm cheng Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 (edited) THANK YOU, thank you!!! @NZEOD I just got your canopy for my cracked F-18F - it arrived safely. Holy smokes talk about packaging... I felt like opening a russian doll all the way from New Zealand. It must of come over the ocean by ship during this pandemic. What an amazing forum here, I've received so much help for the last 17yrs (or maybe longer - when was the overhaul), thank you so much. I'll post as soon as I get it painted up and on my F-18F. derex3592 Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Any of you "Trek" nerds out there know where one can get a set of the 1/1000 Aztecs for the Polar Lights NX-01 Enterprise? It's a nice looking little kit, but if I build it I want to do the aztecs for it, so far no luck....I'm not sure if Acreation was the only ones to make them or not... Quote

Aztek Dummy makes a set for the version with a secondary hull. not sure if it's the same pattern, and wound obviously require some modification, but that's all I can find available in 1/1000... Quote
MechTech Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 (edited) Peter - Speaking to son, "Son, the detail fairy came last night and look what she did!" She left this paint scheme suggestion too! Sorry, no money under your pillow though Pengbuzz - That speeder looks awesome! Perfect for picking-off womp rats (though it's not a T-16) and smuggling droids that "You are not looking for." WM Cheng - Sorry, I missed your post comments. Here's the link to IPMS Canada: https://www.ipmscanada.com/ The airbrush cartoon up there is FUNNY! I don't know how they are up North, but here, my club's guys (non-IPMS) tell me about comments the judges have made on their models at contests. They have lost points for incorrect dehydral in wings, wrong metal finishes, and other nit-pick details. The shows as a whole are awesome to see what people do. I'm going to try to go to the next one nearby when the whole pandemic thang is done. - MT Edited July 31, 2020 by MechTech Quote

It's mainly Tamiya XF-72-JGSDF Brown mixed in with a little bit of XF-74-JGSDF Olive Drab and XF-66-Light Grey, but don't remember the exact ratios. I was eye-balling it and have a whole bottle of it now after mixing lol 23 hours ago, Grayson72 said: That’s looking fantastic! Thanks! On 7/29/2020 at 11:22 PM, peter said: Oh awesome! pengbuzz Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Meanwhile, working on yet another project (for the diorama): (no, it's not a one-man death laser! lol ) It's a seat/ post combo for my 1/72 Imai valks, so the head can be displayed "flipped forward", with the seat up (per Macross). Here's a pic of the valkyrie in battroid mode with this snapped into place: It simply plugs onto the post the head would normally use, and then you just plug the head into place at the end. I'll be painting this up in a little while (had to repait the little "l-shaped" plastic tab on the 1S' nose that hooks the back to the front, so that takes priority. Quote

I got the addition painted up, and it's now paired with the "open engine" leg I built: I really wanted the sense of people actually working on the Valkyrie, so I wanted open parts, open cockpits, you name it. I might decide to open the cockpit on the Destroid when I can get a moment (have my first exam tomorrow at 1:15 PM, so pray for me folks!), so we'll see how that goes! But of course, I also want to be able to display Hikaru's Vf-1J as a whole valk, so here's the original leg (I keep in in the "valk can" with the other optional parts): Quote

David Hingtgen Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 I like it. I think a lot of ISD models "over-do it". The Empire seems to have kept them pretty clean. There's a difference between "accentuating detail" and "making it look dirty"----far too many ISD's end up the latter, IMHO. Quote

derex3592 Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 (edited) Peng is right in this case, I've always been thinking about panel lining it, however, don't want to go overboard for the sake of scale. So here's the bottom done with Florys Grime, which is a brown. It warms up the overall appearance and lightly highlights the panels. I like it. Once I get the top, superstucture and command tower to all match color tone wise, I'll prob take a page from @electric indigo's book and lightly dust a very thinned down coat or two of flat white to tie everything together before final flat coat is applied. THEN...we'll finally be able to light it up and have a LED party! Edited August 3, 2020 by derex3592 Quote
MechTech Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Pengbuzz - Those are some cool mods! Opening the leg, adding an engine and maintainers really adds to the scene. It tells a story instead of just sitting there. Derex - I think you used the right shade of Flory's along with your layers of paint. The color looks great from the photos. It's tough recreating finishes on something that's supposed to be giant. You may want to check it outside in natural sunlight too. That will give you a good look at it. - MT Quote

I know it's fun to weather models, give it that used or battle worn look, but I always wondered about large capital ship models covered in grime and rust. It's a chargeable offence to have rust on our rifles, so we are forever cleaning them. Our vehicles and arty always appear to be in fresh paint, and I've seldom seen rust on any of them. A few paint chips here and there, but it's never as bad as in most models. Is the Navy different? I've never seen rust or corrosion on our boats, but I haven't spent a lot of time with them. When I see WWII battleship models weathered with rust stains, I always wonder how accurate that is with active duty ships. Quote

As far as I know, the ILM team made the panel lines with a pencil, of course in a 3m model. With my Zvezda 1/2700 ISD I tried to use a pencil, but that would have taken forever to complete, I took the same approach as derex3592 Quote

Gabe Q Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 @derex3592 That star destroyer is coming along great! She looks BIG! Wow, what a project! @pengbuzz I like your open leg engine concept. I've always wanted to build a hasegawa battroid diorama scene with the head open like that. Really cool stuff! On my bench, I'm working on some photoetch. 90% of the time, I think the photoetch is a waste of time and money. For this particular application though, it livens up a really bare spot on the model.
