Thank you for posting your progress on this kit for the following reasons:

A) It’s great watching your progress and dedication.

B) it’s a wonderful reminder to never EVER even think of getting this kit again! No matter how much I think I’ve learned or how far I may have come. This kit just sucks!

Chris

I post to serve as a warning to others, lol!

I suddenly remembered when one of the pylons  broke on my first one back in grade 8, I had absolutely no idea how to fix it.  There was no internet, and I didn't know many other kids that built models.

I poured so much glue on it I think it deformed the plastic on the secondary hull.  Then I tried Crazy Glue to fix it but that didn't work.

But speaking of catastrophic problems on my Refit build, I was letting the paint cure outside on the body, but it always felt cool too the touch because of the white paint I guess.

Inside was a different matter.  The hunks of metal and glue heated up inside and started to deform the fantail and inside of the shuttle bay.  The plastic was actually soft to the touch.

IMG_20200725_184530.jpg.26460affa0698ec6cc3523aed7c21652.jpg

I brought the kit inside and the plastic started to harden up.

Anyway, I'll give it a few hours, see if it's a write off, but for now, I'll keep masking other parts.

Could that be from the glue poured on the inside for the weight?

On the one hand, it's another little niggle from the kit, but not insurmountable. The underside can be filled and sanded and painted, and the shuttle bay door may cover up most of the top-side warping.

Carry on, good sir. This bitch has not beaten you yet!!

Great looking cars! Gotta say, I love the classic Optimus. So much better than the Bay-travesty!

Nice. I'm not a fan of Transformers models, but I like your oil work. I assume that the ones with more weathering were done later, as you learned your skills? The weathering on the first white one and Optimus is wonderful.

Nacelles are being wired up now. Hope they fit together alright. The motor assemble was difficult and I’m worried something may be off. Can’t test fit either since the kit is almost “Snap fit” to help in light blocking. Fingers crossed.

I'd say snip or sand down the posts so they don't snap-tight and test it now before you go 'all in.' But it's looking real nice!

Photogirl - Your cars look great! Nice weathering. Looks like my real car always parked under trees!

Peter - Now I know where all those screws go that mysteriously fall of my workbench! You have more hardware in that model than plastic now:D Too bad that's what it takes to get it looking good!

Dobber - Your build looks great! I know what you mean about getting decals off center. Sorry! Judging from the innards, your Enterprise Bossard nacelles will look awesome when running. You can safely hot-wire up a 3V battery pack to test everything. That way you'll know if something does not run right.

Convectuoso - Your Tornado is looking nice n clean so far!

Got out my .35mm mill bit (I'm afraid to even look at it for fear it might break) and worked on the MK-45 Mod 4 barrel. I cut the bolt pattern around the collar and simulated the uneven pattern around it. Then machined slots into the stainless steel slider to simulate the wrench grooves used in removing the actual barrel. Then the fun part was machining the taper into the brass barrel. The muzzle is VERY thin walled. If all works as it has been, the igniting cap's gasses will go out the muzzle for added effect. Attached are what will hopefully look like and what it looks like now LOOSELY fit inside the turret housing. - MT

Holy Cow, Mechtech, that 5 inch Gun looks AMAZING!

I just built the Nacelles, they went together fairly well. Just a little seem separation at the front. Nothing a little putty and sanding can’t fix and I was going to have to sand the whole seem any way.

Well, I thought I was done with my Macross Factory..until a good friend sent me some material support in the form of 1/72 scale figures. the issue I ran into though was that the previous figures I had already installed were smaller than 1/72 (about 1/100).... So...that required some work on the vehicles to get them to the proper scale. (enlarging cabin on boom truck, making tow tractor a bit thicker, etc.)

Then I got more bright ideas (yes, the fun never ends...)

Anyways, some pics for right now; my camera battery is low, so I have to recharge it. I'll have more later this evening folks. meantime, enjoy the couple I managed to get: (crappy as they are):

All that masking for such small parts:

Lol, there's probably an easier way, or maybe I should have just brush painted these parts.  Oh well, at least the lines will be straight and there won't be any brush marks.

The Light Gray (IJN) came out darker than I expected.  It didn't seem this dark on my Valkyries, but against the white, the gray looks dark.  Hopefully the Aztec decals will darken the rest of the ship a bit.  Happy with the green, just wish I had a light blue on my paint rack.

Oh well, it's far from screen accurate as it is, hahahahaha

Dug through my spare parts box for something to spruce up the torpedo launchers.  IMG_20200726_142330.jpg.b5f4a5b85330dd3c4f28d41105846dd3.jpg

I couldn't find anything screen accurate, but we all know I gave up in that a long time ago.

IMG_20200726_140559.jpg.475f1a0a3f1551278a9cf59175a66d22.jpg

On my grade 8 build, I think I just brush painted both sides flat black.

IMG_20200726_143301.jpg.d21e59fe4d68050d6a9c6fe5af978326.jpg

I know some people have cut the original ones out in favour for aftermarket clear blue ones, but that's beyond me.  I just masked the inner nacelles off, hosed it down with something metallic, then a shot of clear blue.

IMG_20200726_153510.jpg.7104573b33968ab9abff60a9ac8545f5.jpg

Ok, no close up shots.  My masking is $hit, hahahahaha!  Clearly, I can't do curves, so this model will be best appreciated from a far....like across the room.

There's more blood, sweat, tears, masking, paint, glue and filler on this one nacelle than both ships I build as a kidIMG_20200726_160525.jpg.ad57de3061599256c56fbefe9ac65a0f.jpg

Thin pin-striping tape or Tamiya tape for curves comes in real handy, as well as a circle cutter. For what's 'done is done,' you could try some thinner on a paint brush and just try to rub the excess off. Or, conversely, if you have a steady hand you could try and paint over it.

The temp was only in the low 90s today and humidity was down around 50%, so I decided to go to the paint bench for round 2-what seemed like 20 for sloooow build up of a light grey and then transitioning on to a very thinned down white tic tac toe pattern all over the Star Destroyer. After 2 hours I stopped. I guess I'm getting there... hard to judge... Not sure if all the work will really be worth it in the end honestly.

Yeah. i did a few cheap kits as practice as filler while i waited for kits to arrive through mail. trying different youtube tips for rusting, road dirt, and i figured since the SDF-1 was in space for nearly 2 years, and beat to hell, it wouldn't have a clean finish, and the daedalus and prometheus would have typical rusting from the salt water before they made it to space.
The volkswagen was i think the 3rd kit. The lancia Stratos was actually the first kit i built after my 10 year break. I was actually sitting on it longer, kind of afraid of it due to the decals, but i took the plunge.

Your kits look great.  G1 all the way.

I just started the decals on my Refit.  I have to say that HDAmodelworx makes a very robust decal.

I just hope that Mr. Mark Softer will help them settle.  These are the thickest decals I've ever seen.  They feel almost as thick as Bandai stickers.IMG_20200726_223114.jpg.857de0d5b3c1302117d90ada24cc82e7.jpg

Great work Derex can’t wait to see her all finished! I too need an airbrush, I’m just weary of having to learn new things. Mainly the clean up process after each use. Seems tedious.

Peter, she’s looking great too. The decals also appear to be nice and subtle. So many usually have FAR to much contrast. One of the reasons I started doing things with the pencils, I hated not knowing how the decals would look with a particular base coat.

Derex, I see your paint lines as well. Keep going. You need to dilute the white a lot and continue with the airbrush till you work it all in (as long as you are patient you wont lose the benefit of your preshade).

@peter Man, those aztecs are look great! Nice and subtle! Keep going!

@Dobber - Honestly, yeh, I use to dread cleanup time, however, since I've been using mostly Tamiya acrylics of late, and more importantly, a gravity fed brush instead of siphon feed,  it's much, much, much easier.  There are trade offs though, enamels and lacquers lay down a "harder" finish than the acrylics.

Beautiful!!!  What plane do these bombs belong to?

Yes I love Tamiya acrylics too mostly for the easy in clean up - I use windex and it eats through that stuff great!  However they don't come in all the Military Greys now a days.  I've added Mr. Color lacquers to the mix mostly because I need to get the right kind of grey.  I haven't used the Mr. Color Aqueous line yet, but I think they behave like Tamiya Acrylics but have the right colours?  However upon using the Mr. Color lacquers I find that I can sand and feather them like a primer where the Acrylics do not sand well.
