Thans guys! I've got about 500 hours into it. I'm still gonna add some more details. It's a gift for my father, this was his ship in Vietnam.

Very Interesting and very well executed... a friend of mine's dad served on the Princeton as well during that time period; I built a SH-34 for him (but I haven't delivered it yet.) Its not the exact squadron... I've also since lost the door and am trying to find a replacement.

I'm assuming that's the same 1/72 kit I have from Italieri, I can send you the door if you like. I don't plan on building mine, I bought it just for reference.

AWESOME job Grayson!!! I especially appreciate it since I'm mainly doing 1/350th stuff now ;) I take it you hand cut the masks for the deck markings? That's crazy in of itself getting them all to look the same - never mind all the photo etch and scratch building work! It looks like a laser cut mask. All the details look great and your dad is blessed to have a son care for him that much! You gotta share the final shots! - MT

I let a GT6N-ZR Tram in H0 (1/87) be printed at shapeways. Got the order on monday. But there still was alot of supporting wax on it and it smelled weird. So today in the lab, I putted it in into the ultrasonic washer. did it three times until everything went finally off. I will ground it as soon as possible. Later I will build an electric motor into it, so it can actually drive :D

Here 2 pictures:

Looking good so far Urashiman! Is that like a trolly/electric car design? - MT

It is a public transportation system over here in Germany, to be exactly

Berlin, called "Straßenbahn" or "Tram" literally meaning "street

train". Here is a picture of it in real life.

You can compare them to the cable cars in San Francisco, except that a tram got its own engine instead of being pulled around by a cable under the street.

It is! That would be awesome... I'll send you my details.

Primary build, and priming complete. On to the main paint job, decaling, and other fiddly bits.

Oh boy! I can't wait for that one to be finished Thom!

Did a quick job for a buddy that wanted to bring a custom to a Transformers meet yesterday. I think this is my first ever TF custom.

The idea is to turn this guy

into an updated version of this guy

here's the over all paint results.

This is what robot mode looked like (old school and custom)

post-151-0-55058100-1361248822_thumb.jpg -> post-151-0-29461000-1361248841_thumb.jpg

I had to putty up the faceplate on the blue transformer because he had a mouth and the old skool version didn't.

post-151-0-63822700-1361248874_thumb.jpg post-151-0-68311000-1361248925_thumb.jpg

This is where I ran into trouble. The decals supplied went on OK, but didn't stay on. I was kinda relieved because I thought the graphics looked cheap. It looked like a news print pasted on a car hood.

post-151-0-87906900-1361249158_thumb.jpg an hour later -> post-151-0-07748300-1361249160_thumb.jpg

Short on time and no more decals I decided to cut the stencil by hand and airbrush it myself.

post-151-0-62003700-1361249318_thumb.jpg post-151-0-69758800-1361249319_thumb.jpg post-151-0-53711600-1361249320_thumb.jpg post-151-0-51834200-1361249321_thumb.jpg post-151-0-38044900-1361249322_thumb.jpg

I added the autobot symbol with some left over decal paper printed on my cheap inkjet... shows how bad my printer is. I get the decals I use on my own kits printed by a friend.

EXO-llent job Exo (I see that comment getting me put on double secret probation). Looks really good and I'm sure your buddy will appreciate it.

Posted (edited)

As a TF collector, I've seen countless customs and repaints in forums. EXO, believe me when I say yours ranks as one of the really good ones.

I keep wondering why there are two circular depressions where the tail lights should be. Maybe they were supposed to be fitted with clear plastic tail lights, but Hasbro cheaped out on the budget at the last moment?

BTW, the blue car bot's name is Tracks. ;)

It's the same in the front, there's a indentation for flood lights but it was never colored in or anything. Thanks for the comment guys! The black on the fire logo looks rough but it's because it's gun metal, so it's actually shimmering like the chrome silver around it. The paint turned out pretty smooth, some one even said that they thought it was molded in black.

Masking hell!!! - although the VF-25S seems to go together easier than the VF-25F...

Now I wanted to try to paint those red stripes with a clear red over a metallic base to give them some depth instead of just stripes....

post-244-0-21742000-1361312371_thumb.jpgpost-244-0-51188000-1361312372_thumb.jpg

Sanding on the arms turned out ok... (hate that recess - its a bitch to sand!)

post-244-0-10336000-1361312413_thumb.jpgpost-244-0-52676100-1361312414_thumb.jpg

Now after 40hrs of powering through this build - here's where I'm at - still all in pieces!

post-244-0-01283900-1361312454_thumb.jpgpost-244-0-25364900-1361312455_thumb.jpg

post-244-0-68141100-1361312456_thumb.jpgpost-244-0-14432900-1361312458_thumb.jpg

The problem is that I want to keep all the fast packs with a flat matte finish but the plane with a semi-gloss finish - so I'll have to decal and clear coat all the pieces separately and assemble in the end! I give myself to the end of the week to get this puppy finished! It's nice to get into modelling again - but it seems like a huge learning curve for me to get back into the saddle. I just don't know how much time I'll have left before I start work again. This is my consolation for missing out on the Bandai Renewal VF-25S Armored.

Well, here's my Panzer Front TD first posted way back in August.

It's done, and it's been one of the most satisfying projects in recent memory.

Wow, nice work EXO.

Cheng, I applaud your mad masking skills, despite how insane they made you...

And Phyrox, that Panzer looks damn mean! And I once had a model of that Camaro!

Posted

@wmcheng: How you managed to so neatly paint up the spaces between those missile pods, I'll never know. Then again, you're a professional model builder of almost legendary reknown here. If I said I wasn't impressed, I'd be a very poor liar. :p

I love what you did with the red striping, replacing them with clear read over a metallic base coat! But since you're giving the FAST packs a final coat of matte, wouldn't that dull the stripes? Or are you planning on masking them first?

Where did you find this kit and what scale?

I'm curious, too. Doesn't look like your average tank.

BTW, great paint job there, Phyrox!

Thanks guys.

It's a 1/35 scratch-built with surface detail stolen from a few Panther/Jagdpanther/Pz.IV

It's one of the fictional tanks in the otherwise realistic PS1 tank simulator Panzer Front. I fell in love with it (smaller, lower, sleeker jagdpanther) and finally decided I had to make it my first ground-up scratch-built project.

I really appreciate the kind words, my wife and friends had nothing but odd looks for me as I would spend hours sanding and cutting and measuring.

Project in the beginning:

post-659-0-01763500-1361332213_thumb.jpg

Kaiyodo made a 1/144 version a few years ago...

edit: I should include it is called the Aureole for those wanting to research it, and in the game was powered by turbines (mine isn't which is why my engine deck detail is quite different).

Awesome TF custom EXO! The black DOES look like molded in color. The detail is better as you masked it. It's a good thing (but a pain) the decal failed.

Nice clean paint job WM! I HATE masking like that and you made it look great and easy (deceptively easy ;) )

The tank looks great Phyrox! People never understand scratchbuilds until that last coat of paint when it clicks in for them. I spent so much time working on my old 1/100 Monster, my wife didn't understand (but it was in the room and while she was just watching TV so no harm no foul ^_^ ) Then she liked it so much it decorated our livingroom (and warded off Zentraedi). - MT

Whoa, a scratch-build? That's an awesome job.

I only started this project when I figured that one out!

I described it here;

http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=35120&p=1020105

Many thanks! I'll have to try this on my MP-11 Starscream. Those awful molded-on missiles under his turbines are driving me crazy.

Another 10 more hours! (45 total so far) - I guess I vastly underestimated the scope of this build! I was going to power this one out, but ended up getting bogged down in the details (its pretty much straight out of the box with no modifications - its the painting that's a b$#tch!).

Finally the missiles are nestled in their cradles!

post-244-0-13713600-1361463471_thumb.jpgpost-244-0-76849200-1361463473_thumb.jpg

Did I mention masking hell?! This is the second time I had to strip it down completely to re-spray this part.

post-244-0-42577600-1361463476_thumb.jpgpost-244-0-22883700-1361463480_thumb.jpg

The wings are finally prepped to be clear-coated sealed so I can assemble the back plate and wing hinge - Bandai is so stupid to structure their assembly this way that you have to essentially fully finish the wings before you can close up the back plate - argh!

post-244-0-96421500-1361463482_thumb.jpg

Did I mention I hate Bandai decals - they flaked when you handled them too much. However I did finally found a solvent - if you remember MicroSET and MicroSOL didn't have any effect on the crappy Bandai water slide decals - but Mr. Hobby SOL definitely works! Bandai didn't even measure the geometry properly (now I know why so many of the professional VF-25 armor builds in the magazines didn't have the red pin-striping around the yellow missile doors - they took me 2hrs to get right?!) WTF with screening all the colours - come on Bandai?!

post-244-0-88198100-1361463485_thumb.jpg

Well finally some sub-assemblies to show for all the work!

What makes these Bandai Valks so frustrating is that you have to make a final paint job on all the individual pieces before you can get to the sub-assemblys and finally see some actual progress on your desk.

I'm running into the same problems with the Koto MG Rex kit.

Hats off to your patience. Just keep that mental image of how awesome the final kit will be.

Posted (edited)

Thanks for the words of encouragement... I need it with this kit! That Bandai Renewal (with armor) for $500?! is looking better and better all the time ;-(

I'm just not sure how I'm going to keep all the armor matte while the aircraft semi-gloss to play off each other AND weather them at the same time with massive masking in the end.

p.s. BTW, I'm not getting any e-mail notifications when this thread gets updated... I have checked my settings and I have e-mail instantly selected for this thread? any one else experience this?
