Ivan Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Sorry to get off-base here. Back on topic. I'd be interested in hearing some opinions from others who have seen this movie, specifically on their reaction to The Mandarin. I would love to tell you about my reaction but then that would ruin the experience for you. Just go see it. Ben Kingsley did an excellent job. Quote
Mommar Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 They are not considered foreign as the films are made by American studios. Locations where they are shot doesn't matter, it's where the studio or production company originate from thus all the previous films are American films. Or rather to truly simplify it all, it's where the money comes from. US dollars are producing the film, it's an US film. If you want to get technical Iron Man 3 was co-produced with some companies in China, so not all of the money came from the US, but it's all Hollywood so that makes it domestic. PetarB is being completely pedantic about it. Quote

PetarB is being completely pedantic about it. That's right! The reason they allowed China to partly finance the production was to get a bigger cut of the Chinese box office (China box office is expected to surpass US fairly soon). This is also why there is a Chinese edition of the movie with additional footage featuring Chinese actors/actresses. But don't worry, you won't see this edition in any place other than China. Like it or not, this is how many Hollywood movies will be financed / made in the future, including Transformers 4. Quote
kanedaestes Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Meh it's not like those scenes will be entirely intrigual to the plot of the film so I'm not too concerned about it. Quote
troyness Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Damn, I live in China, going to see it today, I know there,s a scene where ironman lands surrounded by a bunch of chinese school kids...I hope that,s about the extent of it!!! Quote
Twoducks Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Fantastic film. The events of the Avangers have a great impact in this one. The Marvel Movieverse is strong as a rock… and is evolving. Action is the best out of all the films. And the tension moments are awesome. The Mandaring is freaking great as a villain. Big spoilers: - Great how they make Tony go overdrive out of the fear of a world with gods and aliens running around. He isn’t the top of the food chain anymore and he knows it. - Fantastic armor porn. Tons of it. And in very unique ways. - Night Shyamalan can only dream of pulling off such a perfect white washing like the one done for the Mandarin . And yet we even got Fin Fang Foom and fire breathing. Now to see how they pull off the space racoon… - Pepper actually saves the day. She isn’t your typical damsel in distress. Great! Makes it easier to forget the Mary Jane having to be said again and again and again in the original spider trilogy. - I actually was more bugged with the kid that with the bad guys super tech. I can suspend my disbelief with the super heated body parts that don’t burn clothes but finding a little smart kid that can go toe to toe in a witty war with Tony just by sheer luck is just impossible. Kid was shoehorned but great. Great chemistry between both. - Did I mention that I love the armor porn? Quote
Graham Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I have to say after all the hype I was somewhat disappointed with Iron Man 3 when I finally saw it two days ago. Yes, the witty banter was good, there were some great one liners. RDJ and Ben Kingsly both put in excellent perfomances. However, I thought there was not enough of the Iron Man armour in the movie. We had some Iron Man action at the start and end of the movie, but nothing for the long, long middle stretch. In fact for a lot of the movie, I felt I was watching a Die Hard knock off, with RDJ running around in a vest doing his best John McLane impression. My opinion is if you are going to make a movie about Iron Man, find ways to get him in the armour, not ways to keep getting him out of the armour. I also felt that Iron Patriot got captured far too easily. Don't understand why a bit of heat causes the amor to stop functioning. Also, while it was nice that they showed a lot of different armour for the final fight, we didn't really get to see the armour for more than a few seconds each before it was destroyed (thought the armour was supposed to be tougher). Overall, I'd give Iron Man 3 a 6 out of 10. I felt Avengers was a much better movie. Graham Quote
Twoducks Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I think the movie has more to do with Tony as a character, and the most important component of Iron-Man, than the suit(s). Quote
PetarB Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Graham I have to agree with some of your points: there certainly was a distinct lack of Iron Man, as opposed to Tony Stark. Yes, for a few moments in there it felt quite generic action-movie with Tony and whatever sidekick, running around, etc. As for the different armours, we didn't get to see much of them at all in my opinion, sadly... Quote
takatoys Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I just watched the movie and I did not like it. Some parts were like parodies from MTV movie awards. And if you watched series from the 80s, you will see some Knight Rider, A-team, Miami Vice, even Rambo II, Beverly Hills cop and Star Wars scenes mixed together. Iron Man went too "extremis", it may have the Spiderman 3 feeling. Some people liked it and others hated it. In my case, I like Spiderman 3 more than Iron Man 3. I will not see this movie twice that is for sure, didn't even laugh at the funny moments. My expectations were too high considering it is Iron Man and RDJ. But in my opinion, Iron Man jumped the shark on this one. Bad way to finish the trilogy. Quote

troyness Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I agree with the witt and one-liners, there seemed to be more of it in the 3rd film compared to the other 2. I liked Tony's hero journey and thought RDJ & BK performances were excellent!!! I felt that I was watching Ironman 2 at the end with all the amors, very similar. But overall good movie. But unfortunately I watched the chinese version (living in China) The movie was atleast 2-3 mins longer , and the chinese scenes were NOT subtle. Ironman 3 , is not based in China, nor has any references to China But randomly and suddenly there are 3 extra scenes. Half way thru an office scene(in HK I guess) Chinese actors "shooting the breeze", while in the background TV is on with Ironman talking with a group of chinese school kids(just like you'd see on the back of a cereal box)..I joked with my friends WTH would IM be saying to these kids in true Stark style "hey kids, don't do sleep and get 8hrs of drugs" or "just say no to copyright". At the end we learn that these random chinese actors are actually docters in the second long drawn out scene, with them post op washing their hands talking about the potential success/failure of the operation. The 3rd scene was again in the office disscussing the operation...a shameless plug of who's who of China movie stars, it felt like I was watching 2 different movies very jarring. Now I wanna see the Hollywood version. Quote

Raptor One Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 (edited) Thought the movie is great and really enjoy what they did with Tony's character arc. But I know a lot of people will be upset that he did not spend that much time in the suit. It worked for this movie though because the whole point of his arc was that he was hiding behind his armours and worried that he was no good without them, which is why he spent so much time tinkering and making ones for every possible situation. So the movie was about him realizing that there's more to him than just his armour. He can still do stuff without it. Plus, it was good to see him kicking ass outside of the suit. Makes me think back to his little tiff with Cap where Cap kept telling him to "put on the suit." I wonder if they've seen each other at all since Avengers. Also, greatest post-credits scene yet. All i wanted from this movie was a cameo by Ruffalo's Banner and we effing got it! Nice subtle hint at Doc Samson as well. Also interesting how after Iron Man 2's SHIELD overload that there's almost no mention of them and no cameos from the rest of the MCU, glad they went that route. Saw it at a midnight screening after working almost up until 12 and was in the front near the corner so definitely gonna see it again (would have anyway) to get a better experience. I'm even MORE excited for Cap 2 now than I was before I saw this. Edited May 3, 2013 by Raptor One Quote
Duke Togo Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 (edited) Iron Man 3 was good, but not great. It's devolved into Robert Downy Jr playing Tony Stark, playing Tony Stark--a caricature. But it was very entertaining nonetheless. Not as good as the first two, though. Edited May 3, 2013 by Duke Togo Quote
Roy Focker Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 Every character that's not wearing a Iron Man suit or altered by experiments should have died the way they were thrown around. Quote
anime52k8 Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 I liked it a lot. I thought it was better than the second, but maybe not as good overall as the first. still enjoyed it though, I think it's been my second favorite movie this year after Oblivion. (although I think both are gonna get bumped down a slot Next week ) Quote

Mommar Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 What was the past credit scene? I left before the credits finished. Graham If you saw it in China you didn't get the post credits scene anyway however it was... ...Tony was actually telling this whole story to Bruce Banner, who fell asleep just about the point where Tony was in the Elevator in Sweden. So he missed the whole thing. Then Banner told Stark he's not that kind of Doctor, "I don't have the temperament" he said. Then Tony goes off about how weird it was he had a nanny still when he was fourteen. Quote

(although I think both are gonna get bumped down a slot Next week ) Oblivion was a great movie, IMO. Besides, even if you didn't like it, just watching Victoria stroll out to the pool, slipping her dress off and then sliding into the pool under night stars above a ravaged, battle-scarred Earth was worth the price of admission... Hikuro Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Just saw it. It was pretty good until the last 10 minutes or so and went "Ah.....meh...oh well that figures". Quote
DuelGundam2099 Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 This movie was awesome, better than the first two by far. Quote
Gakken85 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) I Didn't like the movie that much. I would give it a C+ overall. I thought the plot was confused and convoluted. It's like they wanted to make it more like the Dark Knight with a bit of an edge and a gritty bad guy (Bane), and even mix in some James Bond kind of stuff... then they backed off near the end of the film and went full super hero. I wanted to see an Epic superhero showdown between Iron Man and Mandarin, but it didn't really pan out that way. In that way, it WAS like the Dark Knight. Not enough time with the Batman being Batman, just like there wasn't enough time with Iron Man being Iron Man. I didn't feel like the biological DNA rewrite.. whatever it was... was explained properly. And even if it makes you combustible.. proteins are still only as dense as proteins. You couldn't stand up to a Iron suit of super armor. It just felt gimmicky and silly. Once they reveled that the Mandarin was just this actor I completely lost interest. Why am I here? I don't know if the new comics have updated the mandarin to be an energy being.. I think I read that they had.. But the quasi-terrorist with power rings seemed a lot more interesting and epic after the Avengers. I also felt a lot of the actors were trying to out Downy Jr., Downy Jr. Everybody had this flippant style he was known for, and it felt awkward. The scenes with the kid weren't nearly as bad as they could have been thanks to Robert doing his thing. I like that the Iron Patriot was wearing Fred Perrys. Those are my favorite shirts. War Machine is a cooler name. Also, blowing up the suits at the end was silly. I assume they are setting up for him to move over to the nano-tech set-up he has now. Anyway, I wouldn't watch it again. I think the second one had a better story and overall action.
