Minipla Gokaiger Robo Series: Kaizoku Gattai Gozyujin (海賊合体 豪獣神)
Bandai, 2011
Made in Japan

Contents
Box 1: Parts Set A (Head & Upper Torso)
Box 2: Parts Set B (Arms)
Box 3: Parts Set C (Lower Torso & Legs)
Ramune-flavored candy in each box

Using the greater powers of the Timerangers (Power Rangers Time Force), Gokai Silver summons the Gozyu Drill from the year 3000. With the greater power of the Zyurangers (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Gozyu Drill transforms into the dinosaur mecha Gozyu Rex. And with the greater power of the Abarangers (Power Rangers Dino Thunder) in use, the mecha undergoes its final transformation: Gozyujin.

The latest Minipla kit for Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger is here. Just like the DX toy, this kit is a parts-former, wherein different sets of arms need to be moved around during transformation. Out of the box, the snap-fit parts are molded in navy blue and light gray, with enough stickers to make the assembled kit much more presentable than the Gokaioh kit. Of course, it still helps to add a little paint to make it look just like the show version. While it lacks the DX toy's wind-up arm gimmick, the kit boasts more articulation and poseability. Gozyujin's drill arm spins like a drill should. The two halves can be opened for Trident Mode, revealing a spear (albeit a tad shorter than on the show) inside. The halves can also open further for Shield Mode, wherein the drill unit spins to deflect any incoming attack. As an added party piece, Gozyujin's arms can be swapped over to Gokaioh to form Gozyu Gokaioh.

In terms of detail and accuracy, things get very tricky. Gozyujin's feet are too large in proportion to the whole robot body, Gozyu Drill is a tad too long, and Gozyu Rex suffers from anorexia. Despite these shortcomings, the Minipla Gozyujin is still a must-have for any Super Sentai fan.

On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

ep29screen.jpg

Episode 29: "The Abare Quick-Changing New Combination" (アバレ七変化で新合体)

Legends of the Week: Sho Tomita as Yukito Sanjyo and Michi Nishijima wub.gif as Emiri Sanjyo

Villain of the Week: Action Commander Dial

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Sentai of the Week: Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger (Power Rangers Dino Thunder)

When Walz Gil is stricken with a cold, he sends Action Commander Dial to Earth to fetch the cure, which is the happiness of women. After Dial uses his size-changing belt to wreak havoc all over Gokaioh, Ahim devises an ingenious plan to stop the Action Commander's activities. Meanwhile, Yukito Sanjyo - the former Abare Blue, and his wife Emiri look on, knowing that the Gokaigers have yet to unlock the greater power of the Abarangers.

If you've watched Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger, you'll most likely enjoy the comedic presentation of this episode; otherwise, you'll probably hate it if you haven't. The episode puts Ahim-chan back on the spotlight, as she's had the least character development in the series so far. It also addresses the issue of her not having an Abaranger to change into. For those unfamiliar with Abaranger, the core team is only a quartet with Abare Killer as the "sixth" member. Emiri, who was unable to become an Abaranger due to her incompatibility with the Dino Brace, appeared as a mascot of sorts called "Abare Pink" in one episode. And so, in this episode, Emi-pon gives Ahim-chan a custom Abare Pink Ranger Key.

In addition, the episode introduces Gozyu Gokaioh, which is simply Gokaioh using Gozyujin's arms. Not exactly the best Gokaioh combination, but it sure beats seeing Shinken Gokaioh and Hurricane Gokaioh every time.

Easter Eggs

1. The Yukito & Emiri eyecatch is an homage to the cliffhanger endings of Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger.

2. One of Ahim's disguises is a school girl from Saitama looking for directions. Yui Koike is from Saitama.

On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

ep30screen.jpg

Episode 30: "Just a Lone Friend's Soul" (友の魂だけでも)

Legend of the Week: Kazuhiko Nishimura as Joh Ohara

Villain of the Week: Action Commander Zaien

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Sentai of the Week: Choujuu Sentai Liveman (too '80s for Power Rangers fans) and Denshi Sentai Denjiman (too old-school for Power Rangers fans)

The latest clue to the treasure leads the Gokaigers to search for Choujuu Sentai Liveman. After Joe and Ahim meet Joh Ohara - the former Yellow Lion, they uncover Action Commander Zaien's plot to kidnap male athletes and convert them into mass-produced versions of Barizorg.

The third consecutive Super Sentai legends episode goes to one of the most acclaimed titles of the '80s: Choujuu Sentai Liveman. Despite his rather limited participation, Kazuhiko Nishimura still has a lot of fight in him in this episode. Liveman's dark and serious storytelling becomes evident here, as Joe once again has to deal with the loss of his comrade Sid, and Joh mentions that he himself had friends who lost their humanity. And just as with Jetman, Hurricaneger and Magiranger, it's pretty disorienting to see Joe change into a blue warrior that was originally female.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the episode is the greater power of Liveman, which is Gokaioh changing into Super Live Robo. Too bad Bandai won't be reissuing that DX toy any time soon.

Easter Eggs

1. Joh's introduction is a remake of a scene from episode 18 of Liveman, where he raced to save a runaway stroller.

2. The scene where the female scientist releases a couple of butterflies is a reference to the introduction of the Liveman opening sequence.

3. A skateboard in Joh's laboratory has various stickers that reference Yellow Lion and other members of Liveman.

Just as when you thought Basco is a Sentai villain version of Diend he surprises us. He already stole three great powers. Changeman, Maskman and Flashman. He can transform himself to a monster form. This destroys speculation he's switch sides. And like any decent loner villain in Sentai proceeds to trash the team.

OhRed and OhPink proceeds in a operation to get back the powers from Basco, failing that OhPink is give Ohrangers great power to the Gokaiger. Course Marv and company don't want easy pickings they want to earn it thus saving OhRed and fighting Basco. Gai manges to steal the Bangai Hero Ranger Keys from the monkey. But as shown Basco wasn't out of tricks as he can fight himself.

Legends of the Week: Masaru Shishido as Goro Hoshino and Tamao Sato  as Momo Maruo

Villain of the Week: Basco ta Jolokia

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Sentai of the Week: Chouriki Sentai Ohranger (Power Rangers Zeo)

When Basco steals the greater power of Dengeki Sentai Changeman, Goro Hoshino and Momo Maruo of the U.A.O.H. execute their mission. Momo offers to give the Gokaigers the greater power of Chouriki Sentai Ohranger as long as they do her some favors, but at the same time, Goro attempts to make a deal with Basco to hand over the Ohranger powers in exchange for the Zangyack fleet's location.

Weeks prior to this episode, there were rumors of Basco having acquired the greater powers of Changeman, Choushinsei Flashman and Hikari Sentai Maskman (all of which are too '80s for Power Rangers fans). What the rumor mill failed to mention was Basco's true form. Talk about a major evolution in character development, as he's changed from an arrogant prick to one of the most badass villains in Super Sentai history. And he really put the hurt on the Gokaigers.

Aside from that, the former OhRed and OhPink make their return appearances. Momo-chan is still hot for her age, and she's still the same brat as 16 years before. Still, I can't wait to see how the Gokaigers deal with this cliffhanger.

Legend of the Week: None

Villain of the Week: Action Commander Shieldon

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Sentai of the Week: J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai (too '70s for Power Rangers fans), Kagaku Sentai Dynaman (which was once dubbed by USA Network's Night Flight), Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers), Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger (Power Rangers Jungle Fury), Dengeki Sentai Changeman and Hikari Sentai Maskman (both too '80s for Power Rangers fans)

After suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of Basco, the Gokaigers train harder to step up their game while Doc burns the midnight oil to create a new weapon. But when loses his hopes of building the ultimate weapon, he builds up his confidence by helping a teenager fulfill his dream of playing soccer.

Well, we don't get to see Basco again for a while, so instead, we're left with a filler episode that focuses on Doc and promotes the latest Gokaiger toy: the Gokai Galleon Buster. Aside from that and the most number of Gokai Changes, everything else won't be remembered much.

S.H. Figuarts Gokai Red (ゴーカイレッド)
Bandai, 2011
Made in China

Contents
Gokai Red figure
Crossed arms attachment
Extra hands (x 9)
Henshin Cell Phone Mobirates
Gokai Red Ranger Key (open)
Gokai Red Ranger Key (closed)
Gokai Gun
Gokai Sabre
Gokai Cylinder with Ranger Key for Gokai Gun
Gokai Cylinder with Ranger Key for Gokai Sabre

S.H. Figuarts is Bandai's answer to the ultra-articulated figure market dominated by Kaiyodo's Revoltech and Max Factory's Figma. But unlike those two other brands, S.H.F. focuses more on tokusatsu than anime characters; hence a vast majority of their catalog being populated by Kamen Rider characters. This year, Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger becomes only the second Super Sentai series to get the S.H.F. treatment (after Samurai Sentai Shinkenger).

Gokai Red has never looked more badass than with this figure. Like every other S.H.F. figure, he is loaded with crazy articulation. He has at least 33 points of articulation, including double-joints on the neck, elbows and knees as well as the wrists having both swivel and ball joints. With all of the supplied hands and accessories, you can have him in any pose or recreate all of his daredevil antics from the TV series. The downside is extreme looseness on the joints. Normally, I like to demonstrate a figure's articulation by having it in a standing kick pose. Unfortunately, Gokai Red can't do that pose due to his ankle joint being wobbly. In such cases, one must have the Tamashii Stage.04 for Humanoid display stand because not only is it a plus for S.H.F. figures, it's a necessity. Also, I'm very cautious about the figure's durability when it comes to swapping different parts. I've only attached the crossed arms twice, and already the normal right arm is having difficulty snapping into the shoulder joint. And I'm not gonna bother swapping the Gokai Cylinders anymore after doing it with the Gokai Gun just once, as the one on the Gokai Sabre is tightly locked in place.

In terms of detail, Gokai Red is more or less of the same level as the average Kamen Rider figure - there are some details that work and others that don't. The head is painted in a nice, glossy red, while the rest of the body is in a matte finish. That would be nice if only the crossed arms were painted in the same shade of red as the coat. The weapons are exquisitely detailed as if they were literally shrunken from the actual TV props. Of course, the Ranger Key is a tad out of proportion, but any smaller would require a pair of tweezers to hold.

And for those who pre-ordered the figure, they get the bonus Gokai Darin, the ship's wheel used to control the Gokai Galleon. The set comes in three pieces: the base, wheel and a pedestal. As with all S.H.F. accessories, the Gokai Darin is a faithful replica of the TV prop. There is a hole to insert a Ranger Key; unfortunately, the wheel does not have the "Let's Go!" sign as seen in the series.

Overall, despite its flaws, Gokai Red is an excellent addition to anyone collecting the S.H. Figuarts line, and a must for all Super Sentai fans.

Episode 33: "Hero Daaa!!" (ヒーローだァァッ!!)

Legend of the Week: Keiichi Wada as Ryo of the Heavenly Fire Star

Villain of the Week: Action Commander Zakyura

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Sentai of the Week: Gosei Sentai Dairanger (season 2 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger (Power Rangers Wild Force) and Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger (Power Rangers Jungle Fury)

When Gai loses his Gokai Cellular to Action Commander Zakyura's eating binge, he goes into a heavy state of depression. During this time, he bumps into Ryo, the former Ryu Ranger who now runs a Chinese restaurant.

Ryo of the Heavenly Fire Star returns after having done a short stint in the 199 Hero Great Battle movie, and as expected with Gosei Sentai Dairanger, the episode delivers with top-notch Kung Fu action. The fight scenes show that old age has not gotten the best out of Ryo at all, as he mixes his Dragon Fist style with his former teammates' styles. The Gokaigers also deliver some of the best fight scenes as the Dairangers. And Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger seems to be getting more respect from Toei nowadays. It's too bad we have to once again see Hurricane Gokaioh finish off the bad guy, though.

Luka is paid a visit by Cain, an old friend of hers who has since become a wealthy businessman. But she falls into a trap laid out by the shape-shifting Action Commander Vannine, who disguises himself as Luka to destroy the Gokaigers once and for all.

While this is just a filler episode, many tokusatsu fans have been keeping an eye on this due to the guest appearance of Yuki Kimisawa (Kirihiko Sudo/Nasca Dopant in Kamen Rider W) as Cain. Well, he really doesn't do much, other than become a plot device for Luka-chan's past before she was recruited by Captain Marvelous and Joe. Other than that, Luka-chan's dream is finally revealed to the audience. And that's about it.

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Sentai of the Week: Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (Power Rangers S.P.D.), Battle Fever J (Marvel actually co-produced this) and Dengeki Sentai Changeman (too '80s for Power Rangers fans)

The Gokaigers are paid a visit by the Go-ongers' support robot Bomper, who asks them to help her and Sosuke Esumi - the former Go-on Red - travel to the western-themed Gunman World and save that dimension from Disruption Officer Chirakashizky of the Barbaric Machine Clan Gaiark. Upon arriving, Captain Marvelous is challenged to a duel by the self-appointed sheriff Chirakashizky for the lives of Gunman World.

Ah, yes... Engine Sentai Go-onger - the Super Sentai show loved by kids and very much hated by hardcore Super Sentai fans, mainly because of its overly childish appeal. And because of this, the Power Rangers folks took the suits and mecha and made a completely different story out of them to keep their now-adult audience, resulting in Power Rangers RPM. If you haven't seen Go-onger, be warned, for this episode contains talking toy cars and a lot of cheesy dialogue coming from them. This week's bad guy has a lot of badass potential, but is suddenly wasted by another use of Hurricane Gokaioh. At least we get to see the Dekaranger suits in action once again. And finally, we get to see the Gokaigers use Battle Fever J!

But that's not all - this episode ends in a cliffhanger, with the Gokaigers trapped in Gunman World as part of Pollution President Babatcheed's plot to conquer the Human World, and a huge question mark looming over the greater power of the Go-ongers.

Gokaiger vs. Gavan Finally Confirmed

The next Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger movie premieres on January 21, 2012, and it will feature a crossover with Uchuu Keiji Gavan - the 1982 tokusatsu series that started the Metal Hero franchise in Japan. Kenji Ohba is slated to reprise his role as Retsu Ichijoji, best known as the Space Sheriff Gavan. Moreover, Ohba will also play Shiro Akebono a.k.a. Battle Kenya of Battle Fever J and Daigoro Oume a.k.a. Denji Blue of Denshi Sentai Denjiman. And apparently, according to this picture, Gavan and Doggie Kruger a.k.a. Deka Master of Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger are friends.

Metal Heroes Joined the Legend Wars

It has been rumored that in the Legendary Great War, the Metal Heroes joined the 34 Super Sentai in fighting the Zangyack Empire. For those unfamiliar, a few Metal Heroes titles were adapted by Saban Entertainment as VR Troopers and Big Bad Beetleborgs.

Episode 45 is titled "Resurrection Balzion" (TBA). It involves Ackdos Gil creating a new Balzion and sending it to Earth to challenge KanzenGokaiOh. The Gokaiger require Bioman's Ultimate Power to fight the Anti-Bio Particles.

Gou Shirou, former RedOne, shows up to train the Gokaiger and give them the Bioman's power. BioHunter Silva will not appear, because his voice actor, Hayashi Kazuo, was unavailable. Instead, Action Commander AquaMesser will pilot Balzion.

Can't wait to see Balzion back. Too bad they can't get Silver's VA.

Oh some details on the Gokaiger vs Gavan Movie.

-Gokaigers rescue Gavan from a space prison.

-Basco is after Gavan's Great Power.

-Zangyack has a spy inside the Galactic Patrol Union (Space Sheriff) who is Gavan's current boss.

-Gokaiger and Gavan has to fight the evil warrior Gavan Bootleg.

Our heroes travel to Machine World in hopes of getting Speedor and BearRV's delinquent son Machlcon to partner with the Gokaigers and save Human World. Meanwhile, Babatcheed's campaign starts a conflict with the Zangyack Empire.

If the last episode made you cringe over the pure cheesiness of Go-onger, turn away now, for it's gotten much worse. Now you have Sosuke and the Gokaigers lecturing to Machlcon about respecting his parents. At least we get to see the Gokai Machines in action for the first time since episode 2. But still, Go-on Gokaioh is the lamest combination yet. It actually makes Magi Gokaioh and Gao Gokaioh look good.

Past Sentai of the Week: None

Walz Gil receives the mecha Great Walz from his father to combat the Gokaigers. And just to prove Damaras wrong about being incapable of leading the invasion, he and Barizorg instigate an attack on the Gokai Galleon.

For the first time in the series, Walz Gil shows that he has the balls to battle the Gokaigers. The sudden change of attitude brings out a dark atmosphere in this episode's storyline, with an explanation on why Captain Marvelous doesn't care much about Earth and a small truth about the Zangyack's second invasion. We are treated to a very well-choreographed sword fight between Gokai Blue and Barizorg. Also, we finally get to see the Gokaigers use the extra Ranger Keys they acquired from Basco a few episodes back. It's pretty awkward seeing Luka-chan as Zubaan, though.

But the centerpiece of this week's episode is Great Walz, as it's one of the most badass villain mecha in tokusatsu history. Because of this, the Gokaigers are forced to endure yet another cliffhanger ending, with Captain Marvelous going down with the ship.

Synopsis

While the Gokaigers are busy fighting the Zangyack Empire, the Gosei Angels steal the Goseiger Ranger Keys from them to regain their powers, causing a heated argument between the two Super Sentai teams. Meanwhile, the Zangyack Empire are paid a visit by the Black Cross King, who offers to form an unholy alliance to rid the Earth of Super Sentai and conquer the planet.

Lowdown

In the history of Super Sentai, there have been different attempts to celebrate the franchise's anniversary, but they left fans disappointed. Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai (2001) was good in concept, but lacking in execution. GoGo Sentai Boukenger vs. Super Sentai (2006) was a complete disaster. And while Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger is the best thing on Japanese TV right now, having them team up with Tensou Sentai Goseiger (last year's show and currently the least favorite in the franchise) had people worried that the Gokaigers' reputation would be tarnished.

Fortunately, it hasn't affected the Gokaigers one bit. As a matter of fact, it's made them more badass than usual. At the same time, the Goseigers have actually become a respectful bunch in this movie. But it's not just these two teams that make this movie shine. Rather, it's the sheer overload of Super Sentai nostalgia it dishes out. You have veterans from Himitsu Sentai Goranger (1975), J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai (1977), Denshi Sentai Denjiman (1980), Dai Sentai Goggle-V (1982), Kagaku Sentai Dynaman (1983), Choudenshi Bioman (1984), Kousoku Sentai Turboranger (1989), Gosei Sentai Dairanger (1993), Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (2004), GoGo Sentai Boukenger (2006), Englne Sentai Go-onger (2008) and Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (2009) making short, but notable, appearances. Fans will also have a complete nerdgasm when they see not only all of their favorite teams assemble in battle, but also the giant robots and vehicles as well.

In short, Toei finally got a Super Sentai anniversary movie right, after several failed attempts. It's even better than what the Kamen Rider franchise has to offer.

On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

ep38screen.jpg

Episode 38: "The Power to Seize Dreams" (夢を掴む力)

Legend of the Week: Tohru Furuya (Casshern Sins, Kyosuke in Kimagure Orange Road) as Aka Red (voice)

Villains of the Week: Commander Walz Gil, Special Duty Officer Barizorg and Dogormin of the Imperial Guard

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Super Sentai of the Week: None

After annihilating Gokaioh with Great Walz, Walz Gil orders Barizorg to hunt down all of the surviving Gokaigers. This leads to a final showdown between Joe and Barizorg. Meanwhile, an unconscious Captain Marvelous is paid a visit by Aka Red in a dream.

Wow... for a minute, I thought this was the final episode of Gokaiger, as two of the main villains were wiped out in a big way and the Gokaigers acquire their own greater power. The Joe vs. Barizorg sword fight may be short, but it's enough to bring closure to Joe's quest to free Sid's soul. As for Kanzen Gokaioh, it really makes up for the crappiness of Go-on Gokaioh. I'm still not gonna buy the DX Machalcon, but I'm definitely picking up the Minipla version when it comes out.

But with Walz Gil gone, it's now time to focus on Damaras and Basco before Emperor Akudos Gil shows up.

Next week on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

Episode 39: "Why? We're High School Students" (どうして?俺たち高校生)

Basco returns, and the Gokaigers get schooled by the former Mega Red of Denji Sentai Megaranger.

Episode 39: "Why? We're High School Students" (どうして?俺たち高校生)

Legend of the Week: Hayato Oshiba as Kenta Date

Villain of the Week: Basco ta Jolokia

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Super Sentai of the Week: Denji Sentai Megaranger (Power Rangers in Space) and Mirai Sentai Timeranger (Power Rangers Time Force)

The Gokaigers' latest clue to the treasure leads them to Moroboshi High School, where they meet Kenta Date - the former Mega Red of Denji Sentai Megaranger who is now a professor. But in order for them to acquire the greater power of the Megarangers, they must become his students for a day.

ep39screen02.jpg

The show finally does a Megaranger tribute. And while it's more of a filler than anything else, it's fun to see Luka-chan and Ahim-chan in school uniforms. Hayato Oshiba reprises his role as Kenta Date, who was originally a slacker in Megaranger, but has wisened up to become a professor. He doesn't do much in the episode, but it's still great to see him back in the small screen.

Super Robot Chogokin Gokaioh (スーパーロボット超合金 ゴーカイオー)
Bandai, 2011
Made in China

Contents
Gokaioh figure
Extra hands (x4)
Gokai Ken sword (x2)
Gokai Ho cannon
Cannonball plates (x6)
Cannon Effect part
Attachment for Tamashii Stage

Super Robot Chogokin is Bandai's mid-range robot figure line - just slotted below the flagship Soul of Chogokin line. Despite not having the same amount of diecast metal and gimmicks as SOC, SRC figures stand out among other robot figure lines with their incredible poseability coupled with remarkable craftsmanship. SRC also gives Bandai opportunities to explore TV, movie and game franchises that probably wouldn't be profitable in any other sub-line.

Gokaioh is only the second Super Sentai robot to receive the SRC treatment. Unlike its Minipla and DX siblings, SRC Gokaioh is not a combiner; instead, it's an action figure sculpted to closely resemble the robot suit used in the TV series. The most noticeable difference is the placement of the two halves of the Gokai Galleon's hull - which are directly on Gokai Jet (right arm) and Gokai Racer (left arm) for increased shoulder articulation. The base figure has over 44 points of articulation, including double-jointed elbows, wrists and knees. While not as dynamic as Shinkenoh from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, Gokaioh is still capable of doing a lot of crazy poses out of the box. For more extreme poses, an attachment is included to hold the figure on a Tamashii Stage display stand (sold separately). Aside from the default closed fists, the figure comes with one pair of open hands and a pair of gripped hands for use with the Gokai Ken swords. As with other Gokaioh toys, the arms and legs open to reveal compartments that hold the supplied Gokai Ho cannonballs or Gokai Machine parts that will be bundled with the upcoming Dekaranger Robo and Magi King figures. The chest plate can be swapped with the massive Gokai Ho cannon. And just for good measure, a cloud effect part can be attached to the front of the Gokai Ho, giving the effect of Gokaioh executing the Gokai Star Burst attack.

But is this figure 100% perfect? Not exactly. The Gokai Trailer (left leg) is noticeably longer than the Gokai Marine (right leg); hence some difficulty in doing plain standing poses. Still, this one design flaw doesn't detract the figure's playability.

Pre-ordered units come with the Slash Effect parts that attach to the back of the swords to give the effect of Gokaioh doing a forward slash. The parts are also compatible with Shinenoh's Daishinken katana.

Overall, despite one leg being longer than the other, this is an excellent robot figure with tons of possibilities in poseability and accessories. Even if you're not a Super Sentai fan, you should still pick this up as a display piece in your robot collection.

On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

ep40screen.jpg

Episode 40: "The Future Is in the Past" (未来は過去に)

Legend of the Week: Shuhei Izumi as Domon and Asuka Komiya as Honami Moriyama

Villain of the Week: Metal-A of the Agent

Gokai Color of the Week: Red

Past Super Sentai of the Week: Mirai Sentai Timeranger (Power Rangers Time Force)

The Gokaigers are sent a message from the 31st century by Domon, the former Time Yellow. They are offered a chance to acquire another greater power if they travel to October 2, 2010 and protect a temple from destruction.

Despite being mostly a legend-based filler, this episode is worthwhile for Timeranger fans, as the main fight scene uses the show's signature motion-blur shots and an ending that will bring fans to tears. In addition, it reveals the true reason why the Gokaigers show up in Tensou Sentai Goseiger vs. Shinkenger: Epic on Ginmaku. And it looks like Gozyujin toy sales are down, so we have Kanzen Gokaioh taking a break for Gozyujin to once again take center stage.

Next week on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

Episode 41: "Something I Don't Want to Lose" (なくしたくないもの)

After losing his son to the Gokaigers, Akudos Gil sends Imperial Guard Zatsuriku after them. But Ahim-chan gets personal, for Zatsuriku was the one who destroyed her home planet.

Episode 41: "Something I Don't Want to Lose" (なくしたくないもの)

Legend of the Week: None

Villain of the Week: Imperial Guard Zatsuriku

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Super Sentai of the Week: Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (Power Rangers Samurai), Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (Power Rangers S.P.D.), Tensou Sentai Goseiger (next year's Power Rangers?), Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger (Power Rangers Ninja Storm) and Engine Sentai Go-onger (Power Rangers RPM)

Akudos Gil, the Supreme Emperor of the Zangyack Empire, arrives to take command of the Earth invasion and avenge his son's death at the hands of the Gokaigers. He sends down Imperial Guard Zatsuriku to retrieve the Gokaigers' heads. Ahim, however, has a personal score to settle with him, as he had killed her parents and wiped out her kingdom a few years ago.

For the past 40 episodes, we've known Ahim-chan to be a former princess that became a space pirate - and that's about it. We've never known why she joined the Gokaigers until now. As it turns out, her past is the darkest and most depressing among the crew. We also see all of the trials she went through to become a member. And we see a new tactic in Gokai changing, with Ahim-chan switching between pairs - thus utilizing a whole bunch of Ranger Keys that haven't seen much action in a while.

Next week on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

Episode 42: "The Strongest Man in the Universe" (宇宙最強の男)

Minipla Kaizoku Gattai Gokai Machine 2: Fuuraimaru (海賊合体ゴーカイマシン 風雷丸)

Bandai, 2011

Made in Japan

Contents

Box 1: Fuuraimaru Set A (upper body)

Box 2: Fuuraimaru Set B (lower body and Shushutto Shuriken Chain)

Ramune-flavored candy in each box

minipla26.jpg

"Nin-nin-nin-nin-nin-nin-nin-nin!"

When the Gokaigers are granted the greater power of the Hurricanegers, they are given the ninja mecha Fuuraimaru, who was originally used in Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger to combine Senpuujin and Gouraijin into Gourai Senpuujin. Flying on a large shuriken, Fuuraimaru arrives in battle as a support mecha for both Gokaioh and Gozyujin. He is also able to combine with Gokaioh to form Hurricane Gokaioh, which bears a slight resemblance to Senpuujin. Hurricane Gokaioh is armed with the Shushutto Shinobi Chain, and its finisher is the Gokai Fuurai Attack, with Fuuraimaru ejecting from Gokaioh to execute the Hissatsu Ogi Midare Zakura - cloning himself into multiple copies to destroy the enemy.

minipla27.jpg

"Hurricane Gokaioh suisan!"

Compared to the DX version, Fuuraimaru is considerably taller than he should be (approximately within the height of Gokaioh's legs). Scale issue aside, this Minipla version is what you expect: a cheaper and more poseable version than the DX toy. The articulation is greater than a First Grade Gundam kit, despite having no head or wrist movement. Hurricane Gokaioh is considerably bulky, with Fuuraimaru's parts prominently sticking out of the chest and limbs. On the upside, the chest part does not leave any wasted space like the DX version does (due to its helmet-switching mechanism) and the forearms don't look wonky like those of Shinken Gokaioh. The shuriken blades stick out more than the DX version, but at least the effect looks a tad better.

minipla28.jpg

The helmet is well-sculpted and the stickers do their job to make it look complete out of the box. Of course, a little paint will make the details stand out - especially since the stickers cover only one side of the blades. The Shushutto Shinobi Chain is a giant pinwheel that spins freely. It's just too bad there isn't a second chain in the kit that's curved like in the TV series.

minipla29.jpg

In short, Fuuraimaru is one of the better Gokai Machines for Gokaioh. So if you have the Minipla Gokaioh kit, definitely pick this up.

Super Robot Chogokin Dekaranger Robo (スーパーロボット超合金 デカレンジャーロボ)
Bandai, 2011
Made in China

Contents
Dekaranger Robo figure
Extra hands (x7)
Signal Cannon
Judgment Sword
Judgment Sword hilt
Gyro Wapper handcuffs
Signal Cannon effect part
Gokai Machine PatStriker
Deka Gokaioh arm attachment plates (x4)
Deka Gokaioh gun handles (x2)

The third Super Sentai robot to receive the Super Robot Chogokin treatment, Dekaranger Robo is the main mecha in the 2004 series Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (which was exploited by Haim Saban and Buena Vista Entertainment as Power Rangers S.P.D.). However, unlike the older DX toy and Minipla kit, as well as the recently released Joint Gattai toy, SRC Dekaranger Robo is a lot slimmer with more human-like proportions. The figure has over 30 points of articulation, which is considerably less than Gokaioh, but that's because Gokaioh has more parts. In terms of engineering, Dekaranger Robo is leaps and bounds ahead of Gokaioh and Shinkenoh. The range of mobility in the arms and legs is incredible, enabling the figure to do more dynamic poses than the other Super Sentai robot figures. Having a Tamashii Stage display stand (sold separately) will further enhance its display value. The figure comes with seven extra hands - including a left hand for the "Thumbs Up" pose. The supplied weapons are amazingly detailed, but are noticeably larger than they should be. As a result, the storage compartment in the right leg is useless in holding the Signal Cannon. The sign board on the left arm is stored on the shoulder by default, but can be mounted on the forearm for the judgment pose. And to top it all off, an effect part can be attached to the front of the Signal Cannon for the Justice Flasher finisher.

Also included in the package is the Gokai Machine version of the PatStriker, which separates into different components to convert Gokaioh into Deka Gokaioh. The main body attaches to Gokaioh's chest. The front fenders attach to the gun handles for Deka Gokaioh to use as firearms. The quarter panels attach to Gokaioh's legs while separate plates attach to the forearms to complete Deka Gokaioh's Gokai Full Blast mode. Compared to the DX and Minipla versions, this is the best rendition of Deka Gokaioh, but that's already expected with the Super Robot Chogokin line.

Pre-ordered units come with the Boost Effect parts that give the figure the illusion of moving fast.

In short, Dekaranger Robo is one of the finest examples of how a diecast robot figure should be made. Even Power Rangers fans should pick this up, especially those who got burned by Bandai of America with their vastly inferior Retrofire S.P.D. Delta Squad Megazord figure.

Episode 42: "The Strongest Man in the Universe" (宇宙最強の男)

Legend of the Week: None

Villains of the Week: Chief of Staff Damaras and Basco ta Jolokia

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Super Sentai of the Week: Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger (Power Rangers Jungle Fury) and Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman (Power Rangers fans wouldn't know this one)

The Gokaigers discover an old magazine that says Doc was once a legendary warrior who disappeared after slaying a planet-eating dragon. Doc has no recollection of that history, but clues in the magazine point to him as the real deal. Meanwhile, Damaras is released from imprisonment and given another chance to redeem himself for failing to protect Walz Gil.

Last week, we learned about Ahim-chan's past; this time, we get to know a little more about Doc. This episode reveals that if Doc hadn't met the Gokaigers, the Gokai Galleon would've been a complete garbage boat. His attention to detail and cleanliness, as well as his expertise in cuisine, has kept the ship afloat ever since. Still, one must wonder why he's chump change on Zangyack's wanted list.

But that's not the best part of this episode. We discover just how powerful Damaras is, as he is capable of bringing Basco to his knees without breaking a sweat. The Damaras/Basco double-team proves to be fatal, as Basco wipes out Joe, Luka-chan, Ahim-chan and Gai while the duo take Captain Marvelous with them to collect their "unlimited" bounty reward - leaving Doc alone and helpless. At least until the next episode.

What an unbelievable turn of events! Not only do we see Doc finally becoming a badass, we discover part of Basco's true motives, as he literally stabs Damaras in the back. Even more badass is all of the Gokaigers changing into different green warriors to battle Damaras before defeating him and eventually using all of the Gokai Machines alongside Kanzen Gokaioh to destroy him once and for all.

Rest assured, Basco has something up his sleeve. And he needs the Gokaigers to survive as long as he wants to get what he wants.

Minipla Kaizoku Gattai Kanzen Gokaioh (海賊合体カンゼンゴーカイオー)
Bandai, 2011
Made in Japan

Contents
Box 1: Engine Machalcon Set A (front end and small Gozyujin right arm)
Box 2: Engine Machalcon Set B (Kanzen Gokaioh helmet, hand, mini Gokai Ken swords and small Gozyujin left arm)
Box 3: Engine Machalcon Set C (rear end)
Box 4: Gokai Galleon with Gokai Ho cannon
Ramune-flavored candy in each box

"Bari-bari ikuze!"

Engine Machalcon, the delinquent son of Speedor and BearRV, is the greater power of the Go-ongers. Once summoned, he races into the battlefield and combines with Gokaioh to form Go-on Gokaioh. But when the odds are completely against them, the Gokaigers use their own greater power to release the Kanzen Soul, which combines Gokaioh, Gozyujin and Machalcon into the ultimate pirate robot: Kanzen Gokaioh.

Let's face it: nobody wants to pay US$100 for a giant toy car that talks and does nothing to improve the articulation of the DX Gokaioh toy. This is where the Minipla version shines. As with all Minipla kits, this is very cheap and easy to assemble. And while the stickers make it look good, it helps a lot to use some white and black paint to detail it up. Of course, there's nothing special about an open-wheel race car, unless you introduce Gokaioh in the scene. As with the Gao Gokaioh setup, you remove Gokai Trailer and Gokai Marine from the equation and mount the robot on top of Machalcon. The result: quite possibly the most oddball Super Sentai mecha ever conceived. You have a legless robot on top of a race car - how much weirder can that get? No gimmicks appear in this mode, but in the series, Go-on Gokaioh can fly and execute the Gokai Go-on Grand Prix finisher.

But this isn't the reason to pick up this kit. Take a legless Gokaioh, replace the arms with those of Gozyujin, disassemble Machalcon and refit the components onto Gokaioh and you have one badass giant robot. With Kanzen Gokaioh, you get smaller versions of the Gokai Ken swords that decorate the ginormous helmet. You also get shrunken Gozyujin arms molded in black; this is for people too cheap to collect all of the Minipla kits, but with such limited articulation and hollow backs, they get what they pay for. Once you fit in the regular Gozyujin arms, however, the kit really shines. The left arm holds Kanzen Gokaioh's extremely large hand, which, in the series, fires Kanzen Missiles from each finger. Its finishing move is the Gokai Kanzen Burst, which is its own version of the Rocket Punch.

As with the DX version, Kanzen Gokaioh is a love-it or hate-it design. While I still prefer the regular Gokaioh, Kanzen Gokaioh still makes an awesome display piece.
